I hate seeing artists taken advantage of by management, labels, etc. What I hate even more to see are the artists that stand back and let it happen, who don't jump in and say "Hey, this is my career and my life you're screwing around with" and fail to make themselves a known presence in the every day handling of their music and business dealings. There are so many sneaky, dishonest and awful people out there who come across as wanting to be your friend, that want to "boost your career", that want to "make you a star". Be leery, pay attention, research. Don't be afraid to make someone mad, to offend someone, to 'say the wrong thing' and never be afraid to question anything pertaining to YOU. This is about YOU, it's your name and your reputation that goes out on every cd, every single, every video and most importantly it's YOUR money that's going into their pockets. It's about how you're going to pay your bills, put food on your table, keep a roof over your family's head. You have every right in the world to be involved and to make suggestions, give your opinion and let them know you're not happy or not sure about something. Make sure you're getting what you pay for, that jobs are being done correctly and in YOUR best interest. Make sure you have input and knowledge over what's going on behind closed doors. Don't be scared to stand up for yourself and make sure things are being done the way they should be done, honestly, above board and in a timely manner. You should never be afraid to speak your mind when it comes to your career, your life and your money. If you don't stand up for yourself, who will? SPEAK UP! You have the right NOT to remain silent. You're never taller than when you stand up for yourself. You're worth it, your career is worth it.
