JO DEE MESSINA: NEW ALBUM "ME" EARNING SOME OF CAREER'S BEST REVIEWS

PRESS RELEASE

Multi-platinum, award-winning country singer/songwriter JO DEE MESSINA’s new album ME was released this week (3/18) and the fiercely independent, outspoken, and driven artist is already receiving some of the best reviews of her career for the album, issued via her own Dreambound Records/eOne Music Distribution. The Associated Press called it a “playfully vibrant album,” Country Weekly noted “heavy doses of humor and sass that set her apart,” while the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said: “…Messina is emboldened, independent and inspired…[single] ‘A Woman's Rant’ is a fiery, banjo-picking, piano-plinking, honky-tonkin' ode to feminine reflection and empowerment.” The album’s latest single and fan favorite, “A Woman’s Rant” is currently receiving radio airplay nationwide.

What’s being said about ME, funded by fans via her Kickstarter campaign, the most successful one to come out of Nashville and, at the time of completion, the 15th largest funded music campaign in Kickstarter.com history.

“…there’s plenty here that would convert folks if it reaches their ears, like the lead-off track--and thesis statement--‘Not Dead Yet.’ Jo Dee, in fine voice and backed by some bluesy licks, snarls that you better not count her out, even when she’s looking pretty down. First single ‘Peace Sign’ follows the pop-country template that made Jo Dee so popular, as does ‘Strong Shot of You,’ but both offer the heavy doses of humor and sass that set her apart…where she really excels is on scorchers like ‘He’s Messed Up,’ a delightfully catchy cautionary tale that sounds more like something from Pink or Kelly Clarkson than her country peers, cheerfully proving once again that Jo Dee does as she darn well pleases.”

--Jon Freeman, COUNTRY WEEKLY (B review), 3/10/14

“Messina's declaration that she's still alive and well comes across clearly on this playfully vibrant album…Messina continually addresses the value of experience in her songs, as well as in co-writing seven songs and in co-producing the album with Julian King. The songs ‘Love On A Maybe’ and ‘Breakin' It Down’ confront a partner about commitment, making it clear she needs more from him, and ‘A Woman's Rant’ wittily rips at the fast pace of modern-day life for a working mother. Similarly, ‘Peace Sign’ uses clever, biting humor to tell a lover to kiss off…whenever the beat kicks in, so does Messina's entertaining style. ‘Me’ proves that Messina's fans are right to think she still has plenty to offer."

--Michael McCall, ASSOCIATED PRESS, 3/17/14

“Country fans who like their women weak and their music vanilla will not care for what Jo Dee Messina offers on the 12 songs that make up Me. The album--funded by a Kickstarter campaign--is full of attitude. It’s an intensely personal album recorded during an extremely emotional time in the singer’s life...The album’s strength is its lyrics and storytelling. Few will remain unconvinced that she’s ‘Not Dead Yet’ by the end, although the timid may not make it.”

--TASTE OF COUNTRY.COM, 3/19/14

“The newest single from her newly-released album, Me, is classic Jo Dee Messina with a new twist. A feisty Everywoman female empowerment anthem, 'A Woman's Rant' shows Messina in a new place in her life, as a harried wife and mother trying to do it all.”

--Sterling Whitaker, THE BOOT.COM, 3/18/14

“Jo Dee Messina definitely isn’t dead yet…In fact, she’s back with a vengeance, better than ever, with her new album ME…a powerhouse of an album, a musical diary, an honest look into the life of one of country music’s most outspoken and independent women…The tracks ‘Me’ and ‘A Woman’s Rant’ deal with women’s empowerment in a way that will strike the right chord with female fans as they are about women who have to wear many hats (teacher, mother, wife, employee, etc.)…Folks who donated to Messina’s Kickstarter campaign to help make this album happen will definitely get their money’s worth. ME, although seemingly cathartic for the singer, is really Messina’s gift to them, a thank you for supporting her through the years. ME is certainly going to win her an even larger and more diverse fan base, all of whom will be, just like I am, very glad that this musical dynamo is not dead yet…and not only isn’t she dead, but I think she’s just getting started on the best part of her career.”

--Kimberly Dunbar, FLASHWOUNDS.COM, 3/17/14

“Jo Dee Messina definitely underestimates herself when she sings the words ‘I’m Alright.’ The definition of ‘alright’ is satisfactory; acceptable; reliable; good. Jo Dee is leaps and bounds above ‘alright.’ Jo Dee is phenomenal; extraordinary; remarkable; sensational. Just when you thought you signed, sealed, and delivered your list of top vocalists to ever exist, we insist that you add one more name to the top of that list!...Naturally, Jo Dee would not do a show leading up to her new album without introducing some tracks that will be on this album, which is slated for a March release. If the three songs the Miami audience heard were an indication of how the entire album will be, get ready for Jo Dee’s best to date…An inspired and inspiring artist is the best way to describe the unmistakably talented Jo Dee Messina…Consider the countdown on until we have Me in our hands, because this album will, undoubtedly, be one to keep on repeat.”

--Jennifer Swirsky, KEEPINGITCOUNTRYBLOG.COM, 12/23/13

"Rock out to ‘Not Dead Yet’ and ‘Take It,’ and gussy up with girl power in ‘A Woman's Rant’ and ‘Me.’ For all those moments when you want to get loud, shake off the haters and breathe a little fire--Messina's sentimental and sassy fifth album is just the thing."

--Valerie Hammond, NASHVILLELIFESTYLES.COM, March 2014

“They say it's difficult to catch lightning in a bottle twice, right? Wrong. Jo Dee Messina defies the odds with her just-released set ME. Blasting on all cylinders, the red-headed powerhouse returns to her charming roots on the 12-track collection, but with a new found maturity, grace and poise. Whether it is the empowering opener ‘Not Dead Yet,’ perhaps a nod to her splashy rebound, or the intensely emotional closer ‘Say Goodbye to Superman’ (the best song she's ever recorded), Messina is back in full form…the album is one of this year's finest releases. She doesn't skimp on sincere storytelling, such as her current rowdy single ‘A Woman's Rant,’ which gives new meaning to sass and grit…Musically, this offering is the most interesting of all, collecting influences that range from banjo-inflected rock to the typical pop-country flare. Messina packs an electric punch here, making a clear statement of entitlement.

--Jason Scott, NASHVILLE GAB.COM (A- review), 3/18/14

“The album brings a whole new Jo Dee Messina to the forefront, featuring 7 personally penned songs within the tracklisting of twelve. The album kicks-off with ‘Not Dead Yet,’ an ode to her former label sayin’ she has no plans to go anywhere. The rockin’ anthem is perfectly suited for Jo Dee, and fans embrace having her back on country radio…A favorite song on the album, the title track “Me” hits home for me, and I imagine with many other women as well. It chronicles the many roles a woman has…wife, friend, mother, lover, secret keeper, advice giver…It’s exhausting, emotional, surprising, disappointing, and worthy all at once. There are so many more songs worth hearing on Jo Dee’s ME but I recommend you order yourself a copy and take a listen. You won’t be disappointed. It’s with great pleasure that I say ‘Welcome back Jo Dee Messina.’”

--Tawny Tucker, COUNTRY MUSIC TATTLE TALE.COM, 3/18/14

“…Messina is emboldened, independent and inspired…Her voice is strong and confident over the opening track's roadhouse rocker…The title track is a personal ballad of steel guitar and aspirations. ‘A Woman's Rant’ is a fiery, banjo-picking, piano-plinking, honky-tonkin' ode to feminine reflection and empowerment. Who needs a record deal when the backing of the people can garner results like this?”

--Eric Ernst, MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 3/18/14

“The songs are honest and fun and showcase her spicy, spunky attitude as well as her strong, confident vocals…Any working mother will absolutely love and relate to ‘A Woman’s Rant.’ It’s a banjo infused, foot stomping anthem for the woman who does it all…Jo Dee’s latest album proves she is alive and well…and thriving!”

JO DEE MESSINA ANNOUNCES ALBUM RELEASE DATE FOR "ME" - TUESDAY, MARCH 18

THE FIERCELY INDEPENDENT COUNTRY SINGER/SONGWRITER’S KICKSTARTER FUNDED PROJECT IS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL ONE TO COME OUT OF NASHVILLE

MUCH ANTICIPATED FULL-LENGTH MARKS JO DEE’s MOST PERSONAL ALBUM TO DATE AND WILL BE RELEASED ON HER OWN DREAMBOUND RECORDS

JO DEE MESSINA fans will soon get what they’ve been clamoring for as the multi-platinum, award-winning country singer/songwriter has just announced that her new full-length album will be released Tuesday, March 18. With its title ME chosen by fans, the album marks Jo Dee's’s most personal album to date as she wrote or co-wrote many of the songs and will release it on her own newly established label, Dreambound Records, with distribution by eOne Music. For the first time in her career, Jo Dee is able to boldly do things her own way and pave her own path to success.

Spring 2013 found the fiercely independent, outspoken, and driven artist free from a long-term record deal. Jo Dee became free to make the album she wanted, so the forward-thinking country star took to the crowd-funding website Kickstarter.com to create a new full-length album for her fans, with her fans. The “My time. Our music.” campaign allowed her backers to be involved with every step that goes into creating and recording the album, and opportunities to be rewarded with exclusive content and one-of-a-kind opportunities.

Throughout the process, her fans helped Jo Dee surpass her $100,000 goal, making her Kickstarter.com campaign the most successful one to come out of Nashville and at the time of completion, the 15th largest funded music campaign in Kickstarter history. The fans were given a voice. Via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Stage-It, her fans selected which songs would be included on the album, submitted artwork for her label logo, selected the album title ME and chose the album’s first single “Peace Sign.” Check out a lyric video for the song here: http://youtu.be/TqllF4aZkuo.

Following her departure from her record label, Jo Dee began reflecting and started putting pen to paper. The feisty song “Not Dead Yet” was born. “I had been listening to the naysayers around me and thought, ‘I have so much to offer now that I'm free of the restraints I had with my label.’ I then had a conversation with my friend and co-writer saying, ‘I have so much left to do, so much left to say. Goodness! I'm not dead yet!’ And that is how the song was born. It talks about how if I listened to the small thinkers and naysayers, I might as well throw in the towel. Music is my life, it's a part of who I am. I'm not ready to give up that part of my life. Hell, I'm just getting started!”
The wife and mother of two young sons road tested a few of the new tracks, and a crowd favorite at every show is “A Woman’s Rant.” “This song had many more verses,” laughs Messina. “It was written in a few minutes. My youngest baby wouldn't sleep longer than two hours. One night I was sick and could barely move so I tried to wake up my husband to get the baby, but I couldn't get him to budge. After feeding the baby, burping him, changing him, I was wide awake. That's when I went downstairs and wrote ‘A Woman’s Rant.’ It's literally a day in the life of me. Ha!” She performed the song on “The Today Show” this past summer: http://www.today.com/video/today/52082917.

Jo Dee has always maintained an honest and personal relationship with her fans. Me also allows the public to see and identify with her vulnerable side and insecurities. “The fans chose ME as the album title. I think it fits because this record explores many different sides of who I am. The song came about through a conversation with one of my co-writers, Kathie Baillie of Baillie & The Boys, who has a grown daughter. I was feeling the stress of trying to be everything to everyone and asked her how she did it. There is a part of me that thinks when I look in the mirror, I should see Wonder Woman. When I see me, it terrifies me. Can I really pull off all the things I have to be to so many? I don't know. We'll see. This song gives folks a peek at the vulnerable side of me which isn't shown that often.”

Overall, ME is a journey. It’s honest. It’s funny. It’s sad. It’s life. At this point in her life, she isn’t afraid. She’s a woman, a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend and an incredibly gifted vocalist and songwriter who is thankful for all she’s accomplished and looking forward to all that awaits her.
“This album is truly for you, the people who appreciate the creative process, as well as my amazing fans,” exclaims Jo Dee. “There’s no question, I wouldn’t be where I am today without your love and support. You’ve been with me since the beginning. This album is a fresh start for me, and I want us to go on this exciting journey together.”

JO DEE MESSINA's FANS CHOOSE NEXT SINGLE “PEACE SIGN”

OVER 220,000 IMPRESSIONS IN JUST 10 DAYS
AVAILABLE TO RADIO THIS FRIDAY, AUGUST 23

Jo Dee Messina's recent success in fans backing her new album via Kickstarter continues to evolve her relationship with listeners.

The multi-platinum, award-winning country singer/songwriter has engaged fans by giving them a voice on her next album—literally. In addition to some Kickstarter contributors appearing on the album as backup vocalists, Messina messaged fans, asking them to vote on which song they would like to be the album’s first single. In just 10 days she received over 220,000 impressions and the fans have spoken. It was a close call between “Peace Sign” and “Woman’s Rant,” but winning the vote for her first radio single is “Peace Sign.” A signature Messina song, the new single grabs fans with the upbeat, country-rock fun she’s known for. “Peace Sign” will be available to radio programmers this Friday, August 23.

“This song is a blast,” shares Jo Dee. “The first weekend we carried the ‘Peace Sign’ T-shirts, we sold out in two shows. It's definitely a fan favorite.”

“Peace Sign” is the first radio single off Jo Dee's forthcoming full-length album. The song was written by Amy Dalley, Scott Ledger and Tyler Hayes and is produced by Jo Dee herself.

For the first time in her successful music career, Jo Dee is free to make the record she wants, and more importantly, the record her fans have been waiting for. Over the course of 30 days, fans--known as “Team JDM”--rallied behind the country music sensation and showed their support through pledges, shares and kind words. Her backers helped her reach and exceed her Kickstarter goal of $100,000.

Upon reaching the goal, an excited Messina noted that the project has become more than backing an album; it’s a testament to the limitless possibilities of artist and fan collaboration.

“The people are the ones that make music possible,” Jo Dee explains. “They are the ones that come to the shows, request the songs, and get the records. When I first started the campaign, many folks didn't get it. The ones that took the time to learn about it got that this project is something we are all doing together. Once again the fans have shown their love and loyalty. I am truly grateful.”

More news on the album release will be unveiled soon.

Man Suspected of Murdering Jo Dee Messina’s Stage Manager Arrested

Note: We typically don't post stories focusing on media sensational stories like this because we'd rather just focus on the music itself, but we're happy that this man was caught so we thought you'd wanna share the news. The music scene isn't all happy trails and love songs, there is a dark side behind every stage.

A 41-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of murder following his arrest in Imperial Beach near San Diego, Calif., reports  Imperial Beach Patch. Troy Lynn King supposedly fled to Imperial Beach after fatally shooting Thomas Colucci, 41, in Coffee County, Tenn. in October 2012, according to a statement from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Colucci worked as a stage manager for country singer Jo Dee Messina.

A motive for the shooting has yet to be determined, however a Tennessee grand jury indicted King on both murder and theft charges, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Messina recently released the song “Unbreakable” via TuneCore so that fans could purchase it on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, etc. Messina will perform live on her first Stageit.com concert on March 26 at 6:30 p.m. CT. She will be broadcasting live from her Nashville home and will feature new music along with her hits. She has a summer tour in the works.

JO DEE MESSINA’S HOT SUMMER NIGHTS, BIG AUDIENCES AND TOURING TRAVEL NIGHTMARES

Multi-platinum, award-winning singer/songwriter JO DEE MESSINA continues to have a hugely successful summer playing to big audiences and earning critical raves. This week (on 8/6), record crowds showed up for Jo Dee's show in Urbana, OH at the Champaign Country Fair and the audiences around the country continue to grow. Beyond her hectic touring schedule, which is booked well into the fall, JO DEE is working on new music which will be released as soon as possible.

“The enthusiasm is so contagious,” says JO DEE. “Once we hit the stage, it's high energy. I am truly grateful to all the folks who have attended shows. They've made this an incredible summer."

As she travels across the country with her band, husband Chris (who happens to be her sound engineer) and her two young sons,JO DEE keeps her plate full: she’s a regular contributor to the “Babble Voices” blogs on the acclaimed, hugely-popular parenting site Babble.com and continues her “Backstage With Fumbling Mom” blog on her own website. She discuss her perspective on being a parent, fumbling her way through each day and new challenges as she learns how to balance being a mother of two--to three-year-old Noah and 24-week-old Jonah--and maintaining a career to provide for her family.

She talks about life on the road, including some of her pet peeves, like those people on the plane who have to carry on all of their luggage here.

So listen up, all you bin hogs out there. Know this: it is YOU that makes security move at a snail’s pace. You are the ones that make boarding a plane take forever while you search for space and try to force your gargantuan bag into a that tiny little overhead bin. And then you slow down the process of getting off the plane by trying to move against traffic to get your bag that is in a further back compartment, because the space by you was already filled beyond capacity. Be considerate of other flyers and downsize a bit on your carry-on luggage.

And if you fly Southwest, for God’s sake, check your freaking bags.

She also pokes fun at herself, including a not-so-funny story (with video to prove it!) about young Jonah on a recent “Flight From Hell you can see here.

Well, I’m famous … Not in the way I would want to be. For being a songwriter, musician, award winning singer. NOPE! I’m famous for having “THAT KID ON A PLANE.” I travel for a living. We take buses mostly. But, due to crappy routing, planes are a frequent use of travel this year. The last flight we took home from Salt Lake City was an absolute nightmare. Our 3-year-old was doing fine watching baby Einstein while our six-month-old did OK for the first 45 minute, and then ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE. He started crying and would not stop. We tried everything. Giving him a bottle, walking him up and down the isle (meanwhile waking everyone up on the plane). We tried standing him up, burping him, lying him down on his back, on his stomach. NOTHING soothed him. I started to feel the frustration of those around me. I began to sweat profusely. I hate inconveniencing others on a plane. It’s just rude. I wanted to say “Do you think that I LIKE this?” I don’t want to hear the baby cry either. I was hoping to catch a nap after a long hard two week run out west. But, the baby had other plans.

JO DEE MESSINA HOSTING “NIGHT OF NOSTALGIA” CASINO NIGHT SATURDAY, MARCH 3 IN NASHVILLE

EVENT TO RAISE MONEY FOR NON-PROFIT HOLY TRINITY MONTESSORI SCHOOL

Multi-platinum, award-winning country singer/songwriter JO DEE MESSINA is hosting a “Night Of Nostalgia,” a big band swing and casino night, onSaturday, March 3 at 7pm in Nashville. The event--at the Maxwell House Hotel--will raise money for the non-profit Holy Trinity Montessori School. Tickets are $60 and include open bar, light fare and dancing. Patrons will also be treated to a performance from Cliff Notes and Messina herself. To reserve your tickets, visit: http://nostalgia2012.eventbrite.com.

Last year, Messina launched the “A MILLION DOORS” campaign to help raise $2.3 million for the non-profit school in Nashville, with all funds going directly to the construction of a new schoolhouse. Check out www.amilliondoors.com.

The Nashville-based philanthropist is working closely with Holy Trinity Montessori school head Kate Riley to build the 6000 square foot school for students up through third grade, and possibly up to fifth, offering them an affordable, hands-on education. In the Montessori classroom, children are placed in a three-year multi-age grouping (0-3, 3-6, 6-9, etc.).

The school, founded in 2009, currently has 25 students enrolled, with another 45 on the waiting list. The new schoolhouse will accommodate up to–-but no more than–-125 children. At Holy Trinity Montessori, the children develop a secure sense of self, independence, deep concentration, pride in their environment and a unique connection to God. The Montessori curriculum offers a comprehensive, developmental early childhood environment with areas focusing on language, mathematics, sensorial, practical life, cultural and religion.

“This isn’t about just a cause I believe in or the latest celebrity charity,” says MESSINA. “I want this campaign to show that even in a time when people feel there is little hope, that there IS hope and dreams still DO come true. I chose it because we need people from all over to carry us with their support to make this dream come true.”
