CONCERT REVIEW: T.GRAHAM BROWN MAKES A COUNTRY MUSIC PIT STOP IN SWANSBORO, NC

The master of country soul, T. Graham Brown, made a pit stop on Saturday, July 23 at the Carteret County Speedway in Swansboro, NC.

What a perfect day to be on the NC coast, the weather was beautiful (but hot as Memphis fried chicken). Being local to the area, I can't believe I had never been to the speedway before. I always like to review the venues in addition to the performances. What a great location for a concert! The track is an asphalt short track with plenty of bleacher seating and VIP suites, a central area in the middle of the track for stage set up, a great little bar/grill called Moonshiners (yay REAL bathrooms and not just porta-potties!) and a camping area, all ten minutes to the beach! It's a very safe, family friendly place. And as if just being a great venue itself isn't enough, the owner, Bobby Lowery and the staff were fantastic. Their motto is God, County, then racing. They strive to create and maintain an environment that supports families, the community and the betterment of one another. I had the pleasure of talking to Bobby for a bit and he told me something that stuck with me, "I don't believe in a hand out, I believe in a hand up." That's what he does, he wants to help people and that's not something you find in venue owners too much anymore, sadly. It's not what the people who come to his venue can do for him, it's what he can do for the. He also runs a large thrift shop in my town, about 20 min away, called "Second Blessings Community Outreach", a Christ centered organization dedicated to assisting the family, providing them with material needs. They're really a special group of people.

The ticket prices for this show were very reasonable. The VIP package ($50.00) included special seating under a tent with tables and chairs close to the stage, a table with appetizers in the restaurant (Jersey Mike's subs, charcuterie boards with meats, cheeses and fruits, potato chips and dip, brownies and 2 free drinks), and a meet and greet with T.Graham Brown and American Idol season 11 contestant, Chelsea Sorrell. I absolutely LOVED the VIP set up. T. Graham and Chelsea came in and talked to every single person in that room for 2.5 hrs. They didn't do the usual "shake, sign, snap and run", they stayed and were genuinely interested in the stories people had to tell, to find out more about who their fans are and to just enjoy themselves. I wish more artists would take the time to be genuinely interested instead of acting like meeting their fans is an obligation. It just had a different, more relaxed and genuine feel to it than other meet and greets. Even those who didn't pay for the VIP package still get to spend time with TGB and Chelsea outside of the restaurant area before the show.

The infield (I guess that's what you call the inside part of a race track anyway), was full of fans, not a crazy large crowd but a very pleasant and manageable gathering of the best kind of people - local music fans. Parents, kids and grandparents - they were all here for a good, clean, fun time. Runaway Train opened the show, but unfortunately due to other things going on,  I missed most of their opening set except the last song, but from what I did hear and the crowd reaction, they were good.  Now, let's get to Chelsea Sorrell (Runaway Train also provided "band aid" for her). Funny story here, but LONG before she hit the American Idol stage on Season 11, she was a part of the Chris Lane Band (yes, that Chris Lane). I used to help them with their promotions 12 years ago. The first time Chelsea and I actually met face to face was when they played together in 2015 in Burlington, NC. It was only fitting that the next time we were together with again with TGB. She's the sweetest human being. We spent the afternoon laughing and chatting it up about the "olden days". I just love her. This girl can sang. She had the crowd up and dancing, singing along and enjoying time together.

Before TGB and his band (love them, they're a great group of people, so much fun) hit the stage, we had a prayer circle in the bus. T, Sheila, myself and the band held hands in a circle in prayer. My heart was full. Then, about 8pm, T hit the stage to cheers and loud applause and played the hits that made TGB a household name in country music. This man. There is just something so special about "His T-Ness",  not just his vocals, but who he is as a person. His soul runs deep and his heart is huge. His attitude is always positive and that is such a wonderful thing to connect with in a time when things around us are anything but positive. He had the crowd smiling, laughing and dancing, just enjoying each other's company to the sounds of "I Tell It Like It Used to Be", "Darlene", "Memphis Women and Fried Chicken", "Come as You Were", "Brilliant Conversationalist", "Hell and High Water", "Moonshadow Road" and more. When he was ready to sing "Moonshadow Road", he motioned to a young boy standing by the stage to come up with him. His name was Whit and he was so cool. Whit wanted to surprise his grandparents who were in the crowd with a dedication of "Moonshadow Road" in honor of their anniversary of more than 40 years. It was a heartwarming thing to watch. When T started singing, couples were dancing. The anniversary couple were dancing as though it was their first dance all over again, looking into each other's eyes and smiling. You could feel the love. It made me smile. There was also a local woman in the crowd dancing with her great granddaughter who was probably still learning to stand. I could not stop watching them, it was so sweet. When we got a chance to talk, it turns out she was the cashier who rang me up the night before at one of our local restaurants and we remembered each other. She was so much fun, I think she danced and laughed through every song. And I have to say something about Sheila Brown. This woman works SO hard to make sure everything goes off as it should. She is constantly in motion, whether it be talking to the ticket booth, the caterers, the venue owner, the fans, or selling merch. She does it ALL and she does it for him. The love between these two is so obvious. Since the first time we met years ago, I have been "forever changed" because of these two wonderful people.

Added Bonus Tomfoolery:

When the show was over, T just HAD to take a lap around the track. I can't tell you how hard I laughed seeing this big lime green tour bus come around the corner, once really slow and then the second lap much faster. The band lined up at the finish line and did the "ZZ TOP" wave as it went by. It was magnificent. Stay tuned for video proof :-)

Huge thank you to EVERYONE for what is now known as "THE BEST NIGHT EVER ... AT LEAST IN 2022.". I appreciate you all!

You can catch T.Graham Brown and his band on the road and keep up to date on his latest news at www.tgrahambrown.com and on social media using the official links on his pages. SONGS YOU SHOULD BE LISTENING TO: FRIDAY, JANUARY 7

Welcome to a new year! This year, tune into newer artists as well as veteran artists who are still releasing new music and give them some exposure. There is some good stuff released to digital outlets everywhere this week - check 'em out and please #sharethemusic!

If you are able to leave a review on the outlet you use, please do so and let them know how you like the song. These reviews are so helpful to an artist and their team. If you don't like the song, be constructive in your review, not rude. The point is to help these artists, not discourage. And yes, I know there are LOTS of good songs that have been released the past week or two and they're not all listed here. I choose the ones that stand out to me and those might not always stand out to you but at least you've heard about them. Most of the time they won't be by artists who saturate today's country radio but there might be one or two in there if the song hits me right.

Be sure to check out the artist's websites and find out more about them and the latest tour dates. Connect with them on social media.

JOHN AND ROBIN BERRY'S "FAITH, FAMILY & FRIENDS" CONVERSATION WITH T. GRAHAM BROWN AND WIFE, SHEILA

Grammy-winning artist, John Berry and his wife Robin have worked together most of his music career, and now have embarked on a new journey and project they are creating together through the podcast series Faith, Family & Friends. The twice monthly subscription based podcast is an interview series where John and Robin provide a warm atmosphere of conversation in their ‘sitting around the kitchen table’ approach to talking with their guests. Today the conversation with hit music artist, T. Graham Brown and his wife, Sheila Brown is available to subscribers of the Faith, Family & Friends podcast at www.johnberry.com.

Listeners will be captivated and feel as if they are in the room with them. Each episode features a high-profile guest, including celebrities, sports stars, Hall of Fame members, best-selling authors, and entertainers, who share personal stories about how their faith, family and friends have impacted their lives and careers.

“Anytime we get to gab with Robin and John is a pleasure. They have a wonderful outlook on life, especially their Christian walk with God. Both have been tried and remained true,” stated T. Graham Brown. “Their podcast spreads positive vibes wherever it is heard. Sheila and I are so glad to be included in their mission. Tune in and give it a listen. You’ll be glad you did.”

“What a great time Robin and I had visiting with T. Graham Brown along with his sweet wife Sheila on faith family and friends. I have known T. Graham for many years, with both of us being from the Athens Georgia area,” expressed John Berry. “It was especially fun getting Sheila in on the conversation because, though she has handled a lot of his press for him over the years, she had never actually been in on the interviews. What fun!!! I sure love these two!”

Future guests on Faith, Family & Friends will include Richie Furay, Chris Hillman, Candy O’Terry and Jacy Valeras along with many others including surprise guests along the way.

Throughout John’s long and successful career, Robin has been right beside him, working behind the scenes as a background singer and as part of the JB team. While they have enjoyed an amazing life together, they have also faced difficult challenges, both in his career and his health. With God's faithfulness being the constant in their lives, they have grown in their relationship with Christ, giving their marriage a firm foundation. Faith, Family & Friends is the perfect outlet, not only for John and Robin to share their life, but for their guests to speak freely about the three most important things in life; faith, family & friends.

Stay current with John Berry on social media. Music is currently available for streaming and download.

During a time of national uncertainty, GRAMMY® Award-winning country music group Shenandoah is looking to brighten spirits with a special Facebook Live performance event that will bring music to the masses. Today the legendary country band announced "Keep the Music Playing," a free live-streamed concert set for tonight, Wednesday, March 18, at 7 PM / CT. Amid concert postponements nationwide, the event will provide a unique opportunity for fans to enjoy live performances from the comfort of their living rooms.

Shenandoah has enlisted Michael Ray, Aaron Tippin, Austin Merrill, T. Graham Brown, and Katie Austin to join them during the live web broadcast. The event, sponsored by Foundry Records and hosted by Inside Edition's Megan Alexander, will take place at Nashville's SIR Rehearsal Studios with no live audience and minimal staff.

"The main mission here is to hopefully, with music as only music can, bring some sunshine to the gloom," says Shenandoah frontman Marty Raybon. "We'll be taking all of the recommended precautions to ensure everyone's safety."

Butch Spyridon, president and CEO of the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp, is thrilled about the event. "We are happy to see artists doing everything they can to 'Keep the Music Playing' during these challenging times as we try to keep the virus from spreading," he says. "Seeing all the ways that live music is still being shared is part of the creative spirit in Music City."

Though the event is free to view online, the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp Foundation / Music City, Inc will be accepting donations throughout the live broadcast. All donations will aid Middle Tennesseans who have been affected by COVID-19 and the recent tornadoes that ravaged the area.

TAKE MY ADVICE ... INSIGHT FROM ARTISTS, RADIO AND MUSIC INDUSTRY NAMES ON HOW TO MOVE AHEAD IN THE BUSINESS

I observe a lot when it comes to new artists, behavior and notice things that are done all in the name of getting their name out there, some good, some great and some that makes me cringe. If you want to get heard, you have to not only use your business sense but you have to use your common sense. There's more to being heard than good music and having a voice. If you want people to pay attention, there are some things that you, as not only an artist, but as a person, need to pay attention to as well. I thought I'd get some input from some friends on the business, some well known names, some new artists, songwriters, someone from radio and someone from the business side of the industry. Check out what they had to say when it comes to making a name for yourself in the music business. Lots of good insight here about what to do and what not do and some advice that just might help someone along the way. That's the point of this article and it's also why Lovin' Lyrics is here, to help new artists however we can.

Thanks to everyone who took their time to contribute their thoughts and shared their personal advice. If something one of these people help you, please be sure to let them know on social media that it was helpful. I've included their social media pages for your information. They all handle their own accounts and do not rely on social media managers so they do respond personally.

"The main thing I tell young artists is to never give up on their dream. Sing every time you get the chance. You learn something about how to communicate every time you sing. If you are just singing to entertain people, sing something familiar. If you are hoping to get a recording deal, record new songs, don't record favors for anyone, including yourself. Record the best new songs you can find. Always be on time. Arrive at your show with plenty of time to thank people who brought you there. Always thank the helpers and security."

If I was sitting in a living room with you or across a table from you and you asked my advice, this is what I would say..... if you want to be professional singer, songwriter or musician, make sure you love it so much, you just can't do anything else! Realize that if you are making a living doing what you love, you have the BEST job in the world. Why? Because your job is making a living  making people happy.  It is the BEST job in the world. Treat people with respect, everyone you meet.  From radio folks to promoters to other artists to audiences, especially audiences! Be thankful every time you walk out on a stage that they're there, waiting for you! It's another chance to make people happy!  Without them, you wouldn't have a job!  Really the only way you can make people happy is for you to be happy.  That will come if you pay attention and notice what's going on in your life and around you.  The days, months and years go by so quickly, like the blink of an eye!  Care about the folks that you're working with, appreciate their talent and hard work.  I guess I'm trying to say, live in the moment as much as possible and you'll create great memories that will last a lifetime.  Give everyone your best, every interview, every show, every time.  If you sing, play or write, try to do it almost every day. The more you practice your talent, the better you'll be. And the better you are, the more you'll get to do what you love.  It may sound simple or silly, but I know that it's true. One last thing.....if this is what you want, with all your heart......keep at it........NEVER EVER GIVE UP!!!

Good luck!! Keep the faith and spread it gently.

"Listen to your label. When you reach that moment where you figure it all out, use your own ideas and make the label think it was all their idea. Do a lot of listening. My father, Hank Holy, always told me ' Life's a pay attention game.'"

"When on a radio tour, remember names and just when you've had enough, you're tired and want to give up, remember how fortunate you are to be in that position in the first place."

Singer - Member of Big and Rich's Muzik Mafia

Songs Include "I Play Chicken with the Train", "If You Don't Wanna Love Me (With Sarah Buxton) and "Cash in the Cookie Jar"

"My advice to new artists on growing your audience would be when using social media, your interactions with your fans should be more than just “listen to my single” or “buy my EP”.  Spend some time engaging your fans with different types of posts. Post things other than sales ads. Only posting sales ads will eventually get you cleaned out from someone’s friends list or unfollowed. You want to grow your audience? Try keeping things light-hearted when possible and compassionate when circumstances are appropriate."

 Singer / Hit Songwriter

"Learn to accept no. No is OK. Those aren't your "people. Always do something everyday for your career. Make a video! Start a chat! Answer questions! However, do NOT over saturate your fans with music. They know you play music. They wanna know YOU. Get creative! Use social media as much as possible. It's a valuable tool in the arts these days. Absolutely play venues where you can connect with writers/publishers/artists/labels. It doesn't always matter if only five people to play to as long as they are the RIGHT five people."

Advice someone once gave you that stuck with you - Never Give Up. Don't sit around and wait for it to happen, go and make it happen

What to do - On radio tours, be ready to work and be in lots of cars, planes and hotels.

Performing - Always connect with the crowd, read your audience, and be real and honest.

Attracting fans - Always reply, always stop and say hi, always stop for the picture, the signature, the handshake or the hug.

"How to keep from giving up is simple. Don't give up. Let your heart lead your footsteps and succeed or fail you'll never be wrong. Live for what you do and understand there is more purpose in the journey than the destination. Take on every challenge with a full heart and an open mind and aspire to grow from every opportunity you can. Be a student if your craft indefinitely. Appreciate where you are right now, and value it, and give your best effort to each moment but don't disconnect from the hope and drive and ambition to continue down the road. It's a hard concept to completely encapsulate. It really comes down to your value system. Some people simply value commercial "chart success" and/or money as their measure of overall success, regardless of the cost. Some have deeper convictions and aspirations and value things like artistic integrity and over commercial success. Those types have a more comprehensive measure of "success" and I think in the long run find more joy in their work. They also understand it's a much longer and tougher road filled with twists and turns that continually challenge you and test your resiliency and shape your character. Regardless, nothing worth anything is easy. It's a long tenuous road and being passionate about all areas of music isn't just a plus, it's a pre-requisite. At the end of the day, whether you have aspirations as a player, vocalist, or songwriter, focus more on how you can be better tomorrow, than worrying about being good today. If you can acquire that mentality, success is just a matter of time."

"I guess if there's one thing we have learned over 12 years in this town its the power of people. This industry, like any industry has an infrastructure in place…and that's not a “bad” thing. The quicker you embrace that, and not fight it, the better off you’ll be. Learning how to be true to yourself, true to your art, but not stubborn about the fact that you will need the help of many others along the way, the quicker you’ll have a fighting chance at forming a team in Nashville that can help you get to wherever it is that you want to go. Compromise and “selling out” are not synonymous. Bend but don’t break. You have to be able to look yourself in the mirror and feel good about the work you’re doing, but don’t let pride get the best of you either. It’s a slippery slope. Good Luck!"

Advice someone once gave you that stuck with you - "Two of the biggest pieces of advice came from a family member call Mickey Tracey (my mother's cousin who's in the industry) and a country artist from Ireland that I looked up to, Eamon McCann. Eamon said "never compromise" and by that he meant never leave your beliefs of what you want to sound like and want to do. That might have meant I've turned down some 'big' opportunities but I would have ended up doing something I didn't really want to do. Mickey told me once "if there's no platform for you to showcase your talents...then go make one" and so I've been involved to helping set up a few events here and there in the UK and one of the main reasons I co-founded 'BUCKLE & BOOTS COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL' in Manchester along with my friend Karl Hancock last year."

What to do - "It's important to budget radio promo and touring into an album / single release. No point having a great record if no one's going to hear it. As a songwriter performer, it's also important to test your new songs out on a small live crowd. Sometimes the song you've written in the bedroom can sound great to you (because you've invested so much in it) but does it fly when performed live? Do 'live streams' of you performing online to attract new fans, apply to play at all genre festivals, new some interesting covers (maybe mash them up with your own). Also, interact with fans online. Think to yourself how awesome you'd feel if one of your favorite acts replied to a tweet? It's no different regardless of what rung of the ladder you're on."

Attitude - "Simply treat others as you'd wish to be treated and have a really good work ethic. Also have a thick skin as rejection is part and parcel of the industry but have faith in yourself. If you don't have faith in yourself then how can you expect a label to? "

What not to do - "Don't continually email over and over again asking for someone to listen to your stuff. Don't give up on trying to succeed either, its a fine balance."

How to get your name out there - "Play everywhere and anywhere, even if it's in your front room 'live streaming'. Remember, if you don't have a platform then go a create one!"

"Here are a few thoughts from this Missouri Boy...and I preface with the fact I obviously don't have 'answers'. Not even close. Hell, I'm still trying to figure most of this out 😉 I will say that growing up with a Dad who was a college baseball coach helped prepare for a lot of the business side of music. It sounds funny I know...but a lot of what he used to preach to his kids (teams) was:

1- YOU NEVER KNOW WHO IS WATCHING. Whether there are 10 people in the crowd or 1000, it doesn't matter. Always know that you are on. Everything you do. Hidden in that is the fact that the majority of the time it's the little things they're watching. If they came out, chances are they know what you can do. What they don't know is how do you treat the people running sound? How do you respond when your monitor isn't working? How do you react to a crowd who isn't really listening? Etc...

2-ALWAYS SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE MORE TALENTED THAN YOU. More or less, if you are the best musician in your band, player on your team, etc...you have nobody to push you to be better. I have been so fortunate to have guys in my band who are twice the musicians I am. I love the fact that they push me to be better. I have been so blessed to sit and write with some of the best writers in this town, all of who are so much better than me. I take every opportunity to be a 'sponge' that I can. As far as everything else goes, I only know to be yourself. Who are you? If you can't answer that, nothing else matters. Know who you are and what you are about. Be that. Don't preach it...be it. Then if you're lucky someone comes into your life/career and toots your horn for you. Like anything/everything else in life, if you (personally) have to say it (put yourself over)...then you ain't it."

On Radio Tours:

Show up for an interview on time -- if you are even 15 minutes late it can screw up the entire day for someone else.

Show up sober -- look, we get it. You are a rock star and it was a long night of jagerbombs and fireball, but be a grown up. This is our JOB and a place of business...this isn't the Waffle House after last call. Have some respect. If we have to be sober AT WORK, so should you.

Show up with your instrument -- be ready to play. Trust me, no one wants to listen to you talk unless you are cool like Radney Foster or Ray Wylie Hubbard...and guess what? They play AND sing. If they can, you damn well better.

Don't stink -- the studio is small...just like that van. We get it, things get ripe but a little Febreeze never hurt anyone.

Rita also saw this advice on a feature asking radio personnel the same thing so she included the following:

Rachel Yount Martin (Lone Star 102.5 - KHLB FM Radio): "For up and coming artists I'd say the big #1 is in-studio performances. It obviously helps to be talented, but if the listening audience gets to know you, they'll feel more of a connection with your music. And if you're playing a show in the area- even better! Maybe, hopefully for the radio station, that venue will consider advertising if they hear the interview and it helps turnout. Unfortunately for small market stations, some advertisers need convincing. #2 is your job is fun- I know we may be the 3rd radio station you've been to today, but don't forget to have fun with us! The listeners can't see how tired and bored you are on your radio tour, but they can hear it. Be mindful of your speaking voice as well as your singing voice. #3 is liners- they're super easy and worth reaching out to do. Not every station will want one, but I believe for the Texas artists especially, it's another tool that allows listeners to get to know you. "Hey, this is So-and-so from Frisco, Texas and you're about to hear my new single Blah on BBBB fm!" Obviously can't be done for everyone, but it's worth reaching out. Those are my big 3! Good music is obviously a given, but I hope that helps

Matt Ganssle (KYKX 105.7 - East Texas Best Country): "Encourage the artists to learn about radio and how our medium connects with fans deeper than spins. Be accessible for liners, appearances, radio shows, etc. Interact with station social media like a normal person. Never spam for requests - simply interact like a normal person, share relevant content and have fun with our mutual fans!"

Drew Bennett (KOKE-FM): "Have your artist voice liners and jock shouts for everyone on the air there. EVERYONE needs more of those. Send it along with the record. Otherwise, the occasional food surprise can be nice, but we all have to be careful. I know someone who used to live here in ATX who took some plugola and got black balled along with a station fine."

Advice someone once gave you that stuck with you - "From various people, and in various forms, the advice that has stuck with me most consistently throughout my career is this: It’s about the music. It’s ALL about the music. Make great music, truly brilliant music – music that touches people’s soul – and the rest will take care of itself. Marketing, Branding, Touring, Merchandising, etc. – those are all important, but none of those things matter if the music doesn’t come first."

What to do - "Be nice – to everyone. Always. It’ll pay off many times over. And it just generally makes for a more enjoyable life"

What not to do - "The opposite would apply here. Don’t be an a**hole. And back to my original advice as well, put the music first. Be nice and make brilliant music and you’ll be amazed at the doors that’ll open. Seems simple, but I’ve seen first hand how it can work."

How to get your name out there - "Once you’ve got brilliant music, network, network, and network. Go to shows. Go to music conferences. Go to more shows. Meet local musicians. Go to industry networking events. No matter where you live, get involved in the local music community. Get to know as many people as you can. You’ve heard before that this business is all about relationships – it’s kind of true. Solid relationships can certainly help to kick start things."

T.GRAHAM BROWN SIGNS WITH ARTISTLIVE AGENCY FOR BOOKING REPRESENTATION

Country and Gospel chart-topper, T. Graham Brown, has signed a booking agreement with the Nashville based, ArtistLive Agency. The CMA award-winning singer’s management team will work closely with ArtistLive Agency’s president, Deric Brown for future shows and appearances. Brown has become a staple in country music, charting 14 Top 40 Country singles, while making regular appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, where he recently celebrated his 200th appearance.

“I’m very excited to be working with Deric Brown and Tayler Bock at ArtistLive Agency, for my booking,” said T. Graham Brown. “They’re great guys, hard workers, who really know the business and we’re looking forward to a big year and a long relationship.”

Upcoming tour dates will be in support of Brown’s critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated project, Forever Changed. The collection was produced by Brown and Mark Carman. It features collaborations with some of T. Graham's closest friends, including Vince Gill, The Oak Ridge Boys, Jimmy Fortune, Sonya Isaacs, Leon Russell, Steve Cropper, Jeff & Sheri Easter, The Booth Brothers, and Three Bridges. The album marked a triumphant return to the studio for Brown, after a 9 year hiatus. It was met with great critical acclaim from the music industry, critics and fans, securing features on CMT, Billboard, NASH Country Daily and many more.

Brown also had a busy fourth quarter in 2016 promoting his holiday project Christmas with T. Graham Brown. In addition to being sold at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store locations nationwide, the hit maker pulled out all the stops, including his very own Christmas special on SiriusXM’s Prime Country, along with a large handful of interviews.

INTERVIEW: GOOD CONVERSATION, CHRISTMAS MUSIC AND LAUGHS WITH T.GRAHAM BROWN

I absolutely love any chance I get to talk to T. Graham Brown and how can you not, he's so much fun and so personable. Anyone who asks "how's your mama" right off the bat is tops in my book but then again, T's always been tops in my book. He's one of those artists that just carves out a special place in the heart of anyone who is blessed to connect with him.

This year marks the release of T.Graham's first ever Christmas CD, "Christmas with T.Graham Brown". The CD is full of Christmas favorites as well as a couple of new ones, "Santa Claus is Coming in a UFO" which is an example of the crazy sense of humor TGB is loved for and "Mary Had a Little Lamb", a poignant tune co-written with Jimmy Fortune of the Statler Brothers and T. Graham's wife, Sheila Brown. All the bases are covered on this one which is expected as T. Graham Brown always hits a grand slam when it comes to his music.

Having known T personally for awhile, our "quick chat" turned into an hour of stories, laughter, jokes, discussion about the CD and of course, Andy Griffith trivia. I don't call chats with this guy "interviews", I call them "good times" because that's exactly what they are and they're times I hold close and cherish, just like I do my friendship with TGB and Sheila. They're the best. Here's just a small bit of our conversation, a little random, which is how our conversations go and there was more that stayed just between us. Life with TGB is always a random conversation that sticks with you and you don't forget.

Jenn: Hey darlin. How are ya?

TGB: Hey girl, I'm doing great. How are you? How's your mama? How's your life?

Jenn: My life is good, real good and my mama's good.

TGB: Good, I'm so glad to hear that. I really appreciate your sweet tweets. I do read them ya know.

Jenn: Speaking of mom, she's dying to see you. When are ya coming back my way?

TGB: Hold on ... (yells) ... HEY SHEILA! When are we heading back to NC?

Jenn: (Laughs), you're killing me Smalls.

TGB: (Laughs) .. We holler at each other around this house, not mad, just hollering. (I hear Sheila in the background .. "Tell her we'll be her way this year!" I just love the relationship between these two.). Sheila said we'll get to ya this year. Hug your mama for me and tell her I said Merry Christmas.

Jenn: Good, it's past time. It's already been a year since I hugged your necks and that ain't right at all.

TGB: No, it ain't, is it? We'll be back out there this year.

Jenn: So speaking of Christmas, you've been busy.

TGB: Yeah, they've been keeping me busy with this new Christmas album and we did the Opry last week. Did you know we've played the Opry 200 times? Whew! That's a lot isn't it? It's nothing compared to people like Connie Smith who have played it more than that through the years but it sure is a lot and I've loved every time I've done it.

Jenn: So tell me about your new Christmas CD. What's the story on that? What made you decide to finally release a Christmas album?

TGB: Well, Sheila's been after me for about 30 years I guess but what really did it though was when we put out Forever Changed and Sony started distributing it and Cracker Barrel put it on all the stores, it sold well enough that they asked me to do a Christmas album so I finally said yes. We went in and put it together, I wish we'd had more time to put it together but it turned out to be one of the best things I ever did.

Jenn: If every artist had the time they wanted to work on albums, we'd never get to hear anything because it would never be perfect.

TGB; That's a good way to look at it. When you're producing a record, especially producing for yourself, that's one of the hardest things to do, know when to say when. As a singer, you'll be sitting there going, "Hey, I can beat that, I can do better than that." and drive yourself crazy. It's like a painter, you have to know when to put your brush down. But anyway, about the Christmas CD, it's got all the standard fare with a couple of ... um .. well ... "Santa Claus is Coming in a UFO" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb", but the rest of it's familiar .. what's the old saying? Familiar as an old pair of shoes? Nah. How about familiar as a worn out pair of slippers?

Jenn: You turn it on and slide right into the comfort of the music. Sitting by the fire, snow falling outside and listening to "Christmas with T.Graham Brown". Yeah, I'm good with that. I'm cozy just thinking about it.

TGB; That's it. Now that's it. We were talking about trying to make something perfect? Most people don't know the difference really so you beat yourself up in the studio and no one's that buys it is gonna put it under a microscope, they just know they like it and it makes them feel good. That's all I really want from my music, to make people feel good and smile. If it makes them smile, mission accomplished. You know what the truth is? I have the best job in the world. I get to make people happy for a living. That's the way I look at it. That's my job and I have the best job in the world.

Jenn: Well you're good at it. You always put a smile on my face and the face of so many other people that listen to your music. Thank you. So do you have any other projects going on that you can talk about? New music? Tour dates? Super secret special things that you wanna spill?

TGB: Well ... I sure hope we can get out there to see you. Hmm, yes, I have some things going on but nothing I can talk about just yet but you know I'll let you know as soon as I get the go ahead to spill the beans.

Jenn: I can't wait to hear about it! So, I hear there's a story behind "Run Run Rudolph" on the Christmas CD. What's the deal with that?

TGB: There wasn't really a story behind it per se, we had a few minutes of studio time left and I said "Hey! Why don't we do this one. I found it on Youtube." We knocked it out pretty quickly and it came out great. It was kinda of an after thought that turned out to be a pretty cool addition to the CD.  It's Chuck Berry,  we had to do it. Speaking of great songs on the CD, there's one called "Mary Had a Little Lamb" that Sheila and I wrote with Jimmy Fortune. I'm pretty proud of that one too. I'm proud of the entire CD.

Jenn: So where can people find the CD? I know you can pick it up in the Cracker Barrel store, is there anywhere else or is that the only place?

TGB: Cracker Barrell has the physical CD, but if ya like the digital stuff, you can get it online at iTunes and Amazon, those kinda places.

Jenn: You know before we get off this call, you gotta give me some Andy Griffith trivia that few people would know. Any TGB fan knows you're an encyclopedia of Mayberry facts.

TGB: Hmmm, alright, let me think ... alright, when the Darlings, you know the Darlings, the family that played bluegrass, right? The first time the Darlings came to Mayberry, Andy looked out and saw they were playing some music and noticed them. Briscoe Darling, Denver Pyle, took off his hat and was scooping up water because their car had broken down. He's getting hatfuls of water and pouring it into the radiator. Andy goes out and tells him that he can't dip his hat in that water trough. He tells Andy "she's half mad with thirst" and she takes 11 hatfuls. Now there's one trivia bit right there, how many hatfuls of water does it take to fill the radiator in the Darlings' car? Eleven. It takes eleven hatfuls. THEN ... now Andy said he couldn't do that because it was for horses only, it was the David Mendelbright Memorial horse trough. Nobody knows that! Denver Pyle comes back with the response that there ain't a horse in sight. (laughs). The name of the horse trough is another trivia bit, but the real thing few people probably know is what the saying is underneath the words "David Mendelbright Memorial Horse Trough". What is the saying? Do you know? I'm asking you.

Jenn: I have no clue. None. Not one. Really nada.

TGB: (laughs) ... let no horse go thirsty. So 11 hatfuls and if that ain't weedy enough for you, the David Mendelbright Memorial Horse Trough gets even weedier, but the weediest trivia bit of all of it is "let no horse go thirsty". Ha! Ha! Who would know that? The guy who sits there and keeps pausing his dvd and checking it in slow motion about 20 times, that's who. Ha! So there's your Andy Griffith knowledge for this time. Only a crazy guy like me would know this. LOL! I love that show.

Jenn: Well it's been so good talking to you. I always do enjoy time with you.

TGB: I enjoy talking to you too. We should do it more often. Hey, did you know Sheila and I have been married 36 years today?

Jenn: Happy anniversary. Tell Sheila I said Happy Anniversary.

TGB: She's in the kitchen cooking up some beef stroganoff, hear the plates rattling? Hold on a sec ... (yells) ... "Hey Sheila! Jenn said happy anniversary!". She said thank you. Wow! 36 years. She also just told me I need to come fix my plate so I'm gonna go because I'm hungry.

Jenn: Well congratulations again. You're a lucky man and Sheila's a lucky woman. You guys are the best and I love you.

TGB: Ya know, she wrote me a note this morning saying the same thing, that she's a lucky woman. 36 years. Well, I love ya, can you be here in about 20 min so I can set you a plate?

Jenn: I wish I could!

TGB: I'm serious now, I love ya and you call us for anything. We're here for you. Love you! Gotta go, plates are rattling and my stomach's growling!

Next time you're in a Cracker Barrel gettin' your chicken and dumplin' fix, be sure to pick up a copy of "Christmas with T.Graham Brown". You can also order it via their website, Amazon and iTunes. It makes a great gift to go under the tree. Music is the gift that never fails to give back. Check out the video below and hear T talk about "Run Run Rudolf."
