ICONIC ANTHEM “GOD BLESSED TEXAS” CELEBRATES 30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY WITH STAR-STUDDED TRIBUTE

Featured Artists Include:
Randy Rogers, Casey Donahew, Josh Abbott, Aaron Watson, Rodney Crowell,  Kevin Fowler and Pat Green

Thirty years ago, on July 17, 1993, "God Blessed Texas" was released. The iconic anthem, which captured the hearts of millions, continues to resonate with audiences of all ages and holds a special place in the hearts of country music fans worldwide. A tribute version, which features an extraordinary collaboration of some of the most talented and revered artists that hail from the Lone Star State, have joined forces to pay homage to this legendary track. Randy Rogers, Casey Donahew, Josh Abbott, Aaron Watson, Rodney Crowell, Kevin Fowler and Pat Green each bring their own unique style, ensuring a fresh and exciting rendition of the beloved classic. "God Blessed Texas" was written by Porter Howell and Brady Seals and originally released by Little Texas. The song struck a chord with listeners and was able to immediately capture the essence of the Lone Star State with its infectious melodies and powerful lyrics. The new music is available Friday, July 14, for download and streaming and can be pre-saved here.

The song became an anthem for Texas pride and a symbol of unity. “This song made me proud to be from Texas," says Randy Rogers. "I discovered my love for country music right as this song was released and I watched the video a thousand times. So this is truly a full circle moment for me."

“Like many other Texans, this song is part of my DNA,” exclaimed Casey Donahew. “I wish I had written it. What an honor to be asked to collaborate on the new version. I have toured all 50 states and I can say one thing for certain, God definitely blessed TEXAS!”

“Bringing an all-star group of Texans together to celebrate 30 years of 'God Blessed Texas' is something pretty special,” proudly stated Executive Producer - Brandyn Steen.

"I was a musician in Dallas when "God Blessed Texas" was released, and I was immediately a fan. Over the years, I worked on shows that were with Little Texas, and I’m still a fan. So, it was an honor to be asked to play the guitar parts on this 30th-anniversary tribute," shared Mark Matejka (guitarist for Lynyrd Skynyrd).

“I've seen a lot of places; I've been around the world

I've seen some pretty faces, been with some beautiful girls

After all, I've witnessed, one thing still amazes me

Just like a miracle, you have to see to believe

'Cause God blessed Texas with His own hand

Brought down angels from the Promised Land

He gave them a place where they could dance

If you wanna see Heaven, brother, here's your chance

I've been sent to spread the message

'God blessed Texas'

First, he lit the sunshine, then He made the water deep

Then he gave us moonlight for all the world to see

Well, everybody knows that the Lord works in mysterious ways

He took a rest, then on the very next day

God blessed Texas with His own hand

Brought down angels from the Promised Land

Gave them a place where they could dance

If you wanna see Heaven, brother, here's your chance

Well, I've been sent to spread the message

'God blessed Texas'...”

The newly released version of “God Blessed Texas” was recorded at The ER Studio in Nashville, Tennessee. Key people involved in the project included Brandyn Steen - Executive Director, mixed by Bart Busch and engineered by David Spielberg.

Studio musicians on the new project were Mark Matejka (lead and acoustic guitar), Duane Propes (bass), Corey Wright (drums) and Dane Bryant (keys).

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH "THE UNDERDOG": AARON WATSON

ARTIST: Aaron Watson
INTERVIEWER: Charlie Woods
VENUE: Jam in the Valley - Varysburg, NY
DATE: 7/13/19

Follow Charlie on Twitter at @convictcharlie

While at Jam in the Valley in Varysburg, NY on July 13, I had an opportunity to sit down with Aaron Watson, one of my personal favorite artists for the past seven or so year. I've purchased everything he has released since I first began following him (thanks to Adam Drake who is a former radio programmer on Texas Regional Radio and shared "Barbed Wired Halo."). I have watched Aaron's career arc rise and it has been great. I'm so glad I was finally able to sit down with him and ask some questions. He couldn’t have been more gracious.

Charlie: What made you go all in on promotion for “Outta Style” and say this is the one to push hard?

Aaron: I thought it was time to be aggressive from a business standpoint. I wasn’t able to afford it early in my career. I thought it was a reasonable and achievable goal. We also wanted to get radio into an indie artist mindset.

Charlie: Every time I take a look at your tour schedule, it is filled with new areas, new places, and even new countries. Does it feel like to you, in that regard, that the music is growing? (The closest he has been to me is at The Dusty Armadillo, about a 4 hour drive)

Aaron: It has been amazing, the power of the internet, and social media to an indie artist. We couldn’t get on shelves in major outlets like Target, which we now have been able to do. In the last 4 years, we have been to 40 states and also 11 countries. I’m just a salesman selling a song.

Charlie: You wrote all 20 songs on your last album. People don’t realize what a feat that is. Do you prefer to write or co-write?

Aaron: I just love to write. I am always around myself and wherever I go there I am, so I write with me.

Charlie: Does your family sometimes travel with you?

Aaron: From time to time, if it makes sense. They are each involved with their own things and I respect their lives.

Charlie: How many employees are at your own indie owned Big Label Records? Big Label Records was established in 2006 by Aaron and his longtime manager Gino Genaro, and is headed by Tony Morreale.

Aaron: We have two dozen full time employees. In addition, we also have part time and contract labor. In the near future we are signing new acts. We are searching for heart and soul.

Charlie: Can you explain some of the differences between Texas Regional Radio and mainstream country radio?

Aaron: Regional Radio has more freedom and a bit more rebelling. There is a lot of politics on mainstream radio. I have been told for years why we can’t play you on mainstream. It took me 18 years to get our first top ten. I have never been bitter, only thankful. I don’t care if they play my music at 3:00 am or 3:00 pm. I make my music for the fans, first and foremost.

Charlie: My favorite song on the new album is “Blood Brothers.” What was the meaning behind that one? It has a similar feel to “We Shall Be Free” by Garth Brooks.

Aaron: My nephew is African American. I don’t see color when I see him. He is just my nephew. He doesn’t see color either. It is great to see life in that way from a kid’s perspective. That is also why children are such a blessing. It was written from the heart.

Charlie: Jordan Lehning was co-producer on the new album. What drew you to work with him?

Aaron: I liked our conversation and we got along on the phone. His father is a major producer. Jordan did Rodney Crowell’s latest and if he’s good enough for him, he is good enough for me. He is full of fire.

Charlie: What does country music mean to you?

Aaron: It is everything. It is my life, livelihood, my passion, my hobby, and my job. It is what I have to do and what I want to do.

Charlie: What is your current favorite out there now by another artist?

Aaron: I have been listening to Roy Orbison’s son and the Philharmonic Symphony.

AARON WATSON LIVE AT THE WORLD’S BIGGEST RODEO SHOW ALBUM SET TO RELEASE AUGUST 24

Includes Emotional Acoustic Bonus Track “Higher Ground,”
Marking One-Year Anniversary Of Hurricane Harvey

Pre-Order Now and Instantly Receive New Music

$1.41 From Each Album Sold Will Benefit Rebuild Texas Fund In Watson’s Home State

Aaron Watson Live at the World’s Biggest Rodeo Show, the “pioneering independent’s” (Cowboys & Indians) 14th album and his first live album in nearly a decade, is set to release on August 24, 2018, marking the one year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey's landfall on the south Texas coast (August 25, 2017). The Category 4 storm caused $125 billion in damage according to the National Hurricane Center and impacted 13 million people in 41 Texas counties. $1.41 from each album sold will benefit the Rebuild Texas Fund, in recognition of the widespread devastation across Watson’s beloved home state. Recorded live in front of 65,000 fans on opening night of the 2017 Rodeo Houston, the album is particularly poignant to the Texas born-and-bred singer/songwriter.

“We had planned on releasing this album in the second half of 2017, but after the storm it just didn’t feel right,” says Watson. “I’ve always wanted my music to do good in the world and it became clear that there was a real opportunity to hold onto this project and release it on the one year anniversary of the hurricane. So much of my home state of Texas was affected. Hopefully by bringing the recovery efforts back to the forefront, it will remind people that there is still so much work left to do. I’m also extremely proud to partner with the Rebuild Texas Fund, which makes sure every dollar goes back into the local communities, and help them raise money by donating a portion of the live album sales.”

The collection contains 13 songs from Aaron’s 18-year career, recorded live at the 2017 Rodeo Houston, and includes the emotional acoustic bonus track, “Higher Ground,” which Aaron wrote as Hurricane Harvey was devastating his home state of Texas.
“I was out of state touring when Harvey hit. I felt helpless being so far away,” shares Watson. “This storm is personal to me. My grandparents lived in, and are buried in, an area that was devastated. Seeing that on the news and the people there struggling to escape, rescue each other and recover was the inspiration for writing the song ‘Higher Ground.’”

“I pray you always be strong

You always be brave

Take heart and hold on for dear life

Wave after wave, after all those tears fall

down, down, down

Come hell or high water

Only love will find you higher ground.”

Fans can pre-order Aaron Watson Live at the World’s Biggest Rodeo Show now and instantly receive acoustic bonus track “Higher Ground.” In addition, tickets are available NOW for a special Houston-area show as Aaron Watson and Gary Allan play on August 24 at the Smart Financial Centre (Sugar Land). Tickets for the all ages event can be found HERE.

Adding to the summertime excitement, Watson’s new single from Vaquero, “Run Wild Horses,” was just named one of Rolling Stone’s 10 Best Country Songs of the Week, and is currently climbing the national radio charts. The video for the self-penned homage to his wife “turns the heat way up” (Taste of Country), premiered with CMT Music last month and has racked up positions on some impressive playlists including Pandora’s New Country Now, Amazon Music’s New In Country, Apple’s Hot Tracks, and Randy Travis' “Diggin’ Up Songs” on Spotify.

Aaron Watson Live at the World’s Biggest Rodeo Show

“These Old Boots Have Roots” (Aaron Watson)

“Freight Train” (Aaron Watson, Troy Olsen, Tim Nichols)

“Real Good Time” (Aaron Watson)

“Raise Your Bottle” (Aaron Watson)

“That’s Why God Loves Cowboys” (Aaron Watson, Troy Olsen, Sarah Buxton)

“That Look” (Aaron Watson)

“Outta Style” (Aaron Watson)

“Bluebonnets” (Julia’s Song) (Aaron Watson)

“Wildfire” (John Mayer)

“Getaway Truck” (Aaron Watson)

“July in Cheyenne” (Song for Lane’s Momma) (Aaron Watson)

“Higher Ground” (Acoustic Bonus Track) (Aaron Watson)

Aaron Watson wrapped 2017 with a Top 10 on the national radio charts with his self-penned “Outta Style.” At 50 weeks, the hit single shattered a Billboard record, marking the longest trek to the coveted spot in the history of their Country Airplay Chart. The Texas troubadour ended his banner year with his album Vaquero earning one of the 10 biggest album debuts of the year in country music and a number of “Best Album of 2017” nods, including Whiskey Riff and the No. 1 spot on Taste of Country’s year end list, proclaiming the project “a rich collection of cowboy poetry.”

AARON WATSON READIES FOR RYMAN HEADLINING DATE "A NIGHT OF TEXAS" BENEFITTING RED CROSS RESPONSE TO HURRICANE HARVEY

Amidst a string of sold out shows nationwide, Aaron Watson is preparing for his October 4 headlining date at Music City’s iconic Ryman Auditorium. Opening for this date will be fellow acts all from the great state of Texas including Jon Wolfe, Mickey Guyton, Jim Collins and Leslie Satcher, to present “A Night of Texas Music” benefitting American Red Cross Hurricane Harvey response efforts. Tickets start at only $25 and can be purchased HERE.  Proceeds from the show will be donated to the Red Cross.

It’s been nearly four weeks since Hurricane Harvey devastated parts of Texas and Louisiana, and the Red Cross continues to provide shelter, food, relief supplies and more to people in need. Red Cross response vehicles and volunteers are fanning out across neighborhoods to distribute nutritious meals and relief supplies, such as diapers, bug spray, cleaning supplies, coolers, and comfort kits that contain deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste and other hygiene items. Red Cross disaster workers are also providing health services such as replacing lost medications and eyeglasses, emotional support and spiritual care to people affected by this devastating storm.

The date adds to a hugely successful 2016-2017, with headlining ticket counts nearing the half million mark and 100+ sellout shows covering 40 states and 8 countries.

“It is such an honor to headline the iconic Ryman stage, and having the opportunity to turn this into a benefit for all of the folks in Southeast Texas who really need our help is going to make it an extra special night,” says Watson. “Really grateful for the chance to give back.”

Watson’s lead single “Outta Style” from the critically acclaimed album Vaquero, which debuted earlier this year at No. 2 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and No. 1 on Billboard’s all genre Indie Albums chart, is currently sitting in the 20’s on both charts. Aaron continues to undeniably impact the country music scene, building an incredible 18-year career, marking his highest charting single to date and arguably the greatest underdog story in country music since Zac Brown Band’s “Chicken Fried” nearly a decade ago.

INDEPENDENT ARTIST AARON WATSON PROVES AGAIN THAT YOU DON'T NEED A MAJOR LABEL TO BE A SUCCESS

AARON WATSON DEBUTS IN TOP 10 ON THE BILLBOARD 200 ALBUMS CHART WITH BIGGEST CAREER SALES AND #2 ON THE TOP COUNTRY ALBUMS CHART

ALBUM HITS #1 ON BILLBOARD’S INDEPENDENT ALBUMS CHART,
#1 ON iTUNES COUNTRY ALBUMS CHART AND #1 ALL-GENRE

Vaquero, the new album from independent country artist Aaron Watson debuts in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with his biggest career sales week to date, and #2 on the Top Country Albums chart with 39,000 equivalent album units in total consumption. Vaquero landed at #1 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart across all genres. The singer-songwriter, with his groundswell of loyal fans, opened at #1 on iTunes Country Albums chart and has continued to stay perched in the top spot consistently for over a week. As momentum of the release increased over the week, Watson soared to #1 on the iTunes All-Genre chart. Watson made history in 2015 when his 10th studio album The Underdog hit #1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart (26,000 albums sold), making him the first-ever independent, male country artist to debut in the coveted top spot. Watson’s rise was paved by years of hard work and perseverance, and his story is currently featured in an extensive 9-page piece in Texas Monthly’s March issue. Read the in-depth article, HERE.

On Friday, March 10th, Watson will make his national television debut on Fox & Friends morning show live from New York City.

Aaron Watson continues to dominate as a true independent in the country music arena. Marking off major milestones along the way, he’s gearing up to headline the opening night of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo on March 7th at NRG Stadium (home of the 2017 Super Bowl). Watson will be recording a live CD/DVD to capture the evening as the first artist permitted by HLSR to do so since George Strait in 2001. Watson recently performed for a sold-out crowd (70,000+) at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo in the AT&T Center and he will be among the star-studded lineup for the Academy Of Country Music’s Party For A Cause Festival in Las Vegas, NV on April 1st.

Vaquero has released to overwhelming support from press, including Billboard, Rolling Stone Country, Noisey, The Boot, Taste Of Country and more. All have praised Watson’s well-crafted songs; his impressive path carved outside of the Nashville establishment and his steadfast commitment to his Texas roots. See more press highlights HERE.

"Above all, he is authentic. What you see is what you get. At a time when everyone and everything seems overly marketed, when we’re being constantly manipulated and sold to, the music of Aaron Watson can be awfully appealing. There’s no gimmick, no pretension, there’s certainly no irony.” – Texas Monthly

"Watson’s knack for shaping sharp, hooky choruses makes this eleventh edition to his catalog not just a worthy complement to ‘The Underdog,’ but a textbook example of his talents in a genre overflowing with shapeless, cookie cutter ‘bro country,’ little of which is half as enjoyable or well-crafted as the majority of ‘Vaquero’."

– American Songwriter

“…the most sprawling work Watson has ever done, blending country-rock, R’n’B-tinged love ballads, backwoods stories, an epic instrumental track and traditional country twang with ease.” – Austin American Statesman

Watson shared a snapshot of the last 18 years and his slow-and-steady climb to the top with fans via Facebook in a video that has gone viral, racking up over 6 million views, HERE.

NOT HEARING AN ARTIST ON COUNTRY RADIO? GUESS WHAT! THEY DO EXIST.

So I'm sure as a country music fan, you've probably caught wind of the whole situation about the quote by Sony Music's Chairman and CEO, Gary Overton, in a recent interview in the Tennessean, and artist Aaron Watson's response. If you aren't aware, the link is at the end of the article for your reading pleasure or displeasure. The internet is abuzz with anger and disbelief that someone in Gary's position would use the quote "If you're not on country radio, you don't exist." While Gary apparently seemed to be speaking in terms of his using this saying with his promotions team in a "if you don't get them out there and get them played, no one will ever know who they are" context and as a motivator to make them realize the importance of radio promotions for an artist which in itself has truth, the quote has not gone over well with country music fans, artists or like myself, those who work hard for the underdog in the music industry, those artists who aren't superstars of mainstream country and getting airplay. Personally, I feel that while he may not have meant it in the context that it's being passed around as, it was nevertheless insensitive and not something that should have been said, especially in today's environment where unless you have the money to get label backing and a high level promotions team, radio play is a rare gift even for the most talented of artists.

The entire reason that we and several other independent bloggers/promoters even came to be is the artist, whether they be a new upstart or a veteran artist, that just that isn't getting airplay but yet is releasing exceptional music. What positive incentive do they have to keep trying when a music executive says such negative words as "If you're not on country radio, you don't exist???" When this article came out, it happened to come out following the surprise announcement that independent Texas country artist, Aaron Watson, had the #1 country album in the country, outselling major artists such as Jason Aldean, Florida  Georgia Line and even Eric Church on iTunes, all with ZERO mainstream radio play. How does that happen when an artist that has no airplay doesn't seem to exist by industry standards? By releasing good music, by having an enormous fan base who stands behind the artist, purchases their music, promotes them on social media and sells out their concerts - because to them, they damn sure exist. Florida Georgia Line existed LONG before mainstream radio caught on and before they were even considered for a record deal. Their existence on social media and their establishment of a solid fan base got their name on the map a good 3 years before they even got the notice they did from Big Machine. New artists do exist, as a matter of fact, I would venture to say that in today's environment, most playlists contain music from at least 5-10 independent artists that you'll never hear on country radio and at least the same number, if not more older artists that once had hits but are phased out because the demographic has gone younger. Music fans are learning that country radio and great music aren't always synonymous. As a matter of fact. the best music isn't always on the radio but it is on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Amazon, in small venues, performing as opening acts for large names, and the names of those artists that create that music are on the tongues of thousands of country music fans telling everyone they know how great their music is and why they should listen to it. Their music has made the difference in many lives and for that reason, they exist. Their music is quality, from the heart and not of the cookie cutter variety - they exist. These artists exist every night performing for small appreciative audiences, they travel town to town in vans that break down and they stay in cheap hotels, and make next to nothing, all to get their music heard. They exist.

These artists do certainly exist and we, as fans, are glad they do. They give us a break from the same playlists that regurgitate over and over and over, hour by hour, day by day. They are unique, they are what we choose to listen to and what we choose to tell others about. They more than exist, they give us a reason to NOT turn on the radio but to purchase the music that radio won't play so we can create our own personal playlists of the music that shapes us, the music that makes our hearts beat and the music that we consider worth our time and our money. So while we realize that you more than likely didn't mean it in the context your quote has been taken as, those words still leave a sting for both artists and the fans who love their music.

Aaron Watson’s latest single “That Look” is the most recent offering from the prolific red-dirt native whose previous contributions include 11 albums in a dozen years, where he sings with names such as Willie Nelson, Justin McBride, John Anderson and a whole sundry of others.  That’s just from his 2012 album “Real Good Time” and doesn’t even cover all the talent that’s present on there.  At 35 Watson has spent nearly a third of his life in the music business and you can tell, as he sings with the confidence of a seasoned professional here.  He’s singing about the girl he’s with, the one that gives him “that look” the little mischievous “come on over here boy” look.  If you wonder who that girl is, it’s none other than his wife, Kimberly Watson as he wrote this for her.  “When she’s good, she’s good but even better when she gets that look.”  A serenade in a Texas velvet voice.  “That Look” is the lead single off of his upcoming album “The Underdog.”  He compares them throughout the song how she’s so “calm and collected” and he’s ready to “paint the town.”  The calm and collected part is all anyone else sees, it’s only him that she sees that little bit of wild side she saves for him.  Music and white wine helps that look come right out though.  Aaron Watson is touring mostly in the Texas and surrounding areas but has a couple dates in Vegas, Colorado, Arizona and California in the coming months.

VIDEO: AARON WATSON WANTS YOU TO "RAISE YOUR BOTTLE" FOR THE BOOT CAMPAIGN

Country artist Aaron Watson comes from a military family, and like a lot of us, his thoughts are with those who serve our country and sacrifice so much as we approach the 11th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. “I am the son of a soldier and proud of that beyond words. All my life I have watched my Dad endure hardships of all kinds because of the severe injuries he received in battle. At a very young age, I developed a tremendous amount of respect and appreciation for all the men and women who have served our country. And now I feel called to give back,” said Aaron.

Aaron has partnered with The Boot Campaign to raise money for military families through his current Patriotic single "Raise Your Bottle." ALL of the proceeds from the song's sale will directly benefit The Boot Campaign to help military families through tough economic times.

"Raise Your Bottle" is currently #2 on the Billboard Texas Regional Music chart.
