Last week, country group BlackHawk and southern rock band The Outlaws, continued their yearly charitable giving, this time donating a collective $75,0000 to MusiCares and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.

Henry Paul, a member of BlackHawk, as well as the sole original active member of The Outlaws, presented a $50,000 check to Vanderbilt on behalf of BlackHawk's "Van Stephenson Memorial Cancer Research Fund.” Stephenson, a founding member of BlackHawk, passed away from melanoma in 2001. Additionally, The Outlaws donated $25,000 to MusiCares.

"BlackHawk's commitment to the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center goes back to the mid-nineties and our involvement with the charity event, Country In The Rockies,” explains Paul. "Since establishing our own 501C in the early 2000’s, in the name of our diseased bandmate Van Stephenson, we have donated close to $500,000 to the research lab for cancer research.”

BlackHawk and The Outlaws plan to continue their annual donations for years to come.

"In 2014, The Outlaws established MusiCares as the beneficiary of their charitable efforts and have since donated close to $150,000 to that outstanding organization,” Paul continues. "Our charity director, Lori Eyler, works tirelessly in these fundraising efforts, and we'd like to recognize Bobby Orr, and the Robert E. & Marie Orr Smith Foundation for their generous support."

Twelve-Track Compilation, Dedicated to Stephenson, Drops Friday, June 24; First Single, “Baby The Rain Must Fall,” Available Now

Blue Highway, set for release on Friday, June 24 via BFD / Audium Nashville, features twelve archival tunes from 1992 — but only recently were the tunes mixed and mastered with the addition of bass, drums, electric guitar and mandolin.

The upcoming compilation features the vocals of all three original members of BlackHawk: Henry Paul, Dave Robbins and the late Van Stephenson, who died of cancer in 2001. All twelve album cuts were written by the trio.

“Looking back on BlackHawk’s beginnings, I’m always reminded of the innocence and personal character of our songwriting, and both the fragile beauty and strength of our voices,” says Paul. “For Van and Dave and I, it was magic watching this exciting chapter in our life’s musical journey unfold. This album once again brings the three of us together and sheds light on the dawn of our creation in those early days.”

“This collection of songs brings home the fact that it wasn’t by chance that Van and Henry and I got to have this dance with you,” adds Robbins.

Paul and Robbins are dedicating the upcoming release to the memory of their departed bandmate. Before Stephenson's passing, the two surviving members made a pact with him to keep BlackHawk alive for years to come.

“Without Van, BlackHawk would have never been, and his uniquely beautiful talent was at the heart of all we did,” explains Paul. “Dave and I continue to honor our last promise made to him by keeping BlackHawk together and doing what we can do help find a cure for cancer.”

In 2006, BlackHawk established the Van Stephenson Cancer Research Fund. Since its inception, the non-profit has has generated over $400,000 for the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. To donate, visit blackhawklive.com/vans-charity.

BLACKHAWK DONATES $25,000 TO VANDERBILT FOR CANCER RESEARCH

Dave Robbins (BlackHawk), Henry Paul (BlackHawk), Dr. Justin Balko (Vanderbilt),
Lori Stefanski (Vanderbilt)

Last week in Nashville at the fifth annual Freeborn Jam benefit concert, held at The City Winery, Henry Paul and Dave Robbins, members of country group BlackHawk, continued their annual tradition of donating to Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.

Paul and Robbins presented a $25,000 check to Vanderbilt on behalf of BlackHawk's "Van Stephenson Memorial Cancer Research Fund.” Stephenson, a founding member of BlackHawk, passed away from melanoma in 2001.

"BlackHawk's commitment to fund cancer research continues as we strive to honor Van's dying wish, 'That we do what we can to try and find a cure,'" says Paul. "This effort started more than twenty years ago and will continue into the foreseeable future.”

"What an honor for Henry and I to support Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center year after year in memory of our friend and original co-founder of Blackhawk, Van Stephenson,” adds Robinson.

Collectively since 2006, BlackHawk's "Van Stephenson Memorial Cancer Research Fund" has generated $400,000 for the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.

BLACKHAWK AND THE OUTLAWS SIGN WITH UTA FOR WORLDWIDE REPRESENTATION

Country music hitmakers BlackHawk and legendary southern rock staple The Outlaws have signed exclusive booking deals with UTA (United Talent Agency). UTA will represent both bands worldwide in all areas — live concert bookings, literary deals, film, television and more.

"We're thrilled to be working with UTA,” says Henry Paul, a founding member of both bands. "This is the dawning of the return to the road for BlackHawk, and The Outlaws, and getting back to what we have loved to do for so many years.”

"The Outlaws are a pillar in the history and the fabric of southern rock music today,” notes UTA's Alec Vidmar, Greg Janese and Lance Roberts in a joint statement. "BlackHawk produced some of the most iconic songs of '90s country music with distinctive three-part harmonies. It is not every day we have the opportunity to work with such genre-defying acts. We are over the moon to work with both iconic groups to bring their music to crowds everywhere."

BlackHawk and The Outlaws are managed by Charlie Brusco and Darren Hagen in the Atlanta Red Light Management office.

"I have been associated with Henry Paul since our early days of the Outlaws in 1973," explains Brusco. "He continues to move fans with his music and I am proud to continue the great heritage."

BLACKHAWK LIVE ALBUM, JUST ABOUT RIGHT: LIVE FROM ATLANTA, OUT NOW

Today, multi-platinum selling country band BlackHawk released its new project, Just About Right: Live From Atlanta. Recorded live at Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta, Georgia in the fall of 2017 — when concerts were still a thing — the 22-track album features the best of BlackHawk and is sure to “bring back memories” (Parade).

Known for their smooth, brother-like harmonies, BlackHawk was originally made up of trio Henry Paul (lead vocals, mandolin, acoustic guitar), Dave Robbins (harmony vocals, keyboard) and the late Van Stephenson (harmony vocals, electric guitar).

Just About Right: Live From Atlanta revisits the band's “impressive catalog” with a double-disc album chock-full of its greatest hits (Wide Open Country). Recording a live album, BlackHawk is stripped down to its rawest form and gave the duo a chance to reunite with their original backing band from the 90s, performing again alongside Bobby Huff (percussion) and Dale Oliver (lead guitar). Paul explains that this reunion “made for a very memorable musical moment. Many of the songs we chose were personal favorites from our early records spanning nearly a decade.”

The album includes the band’s smash hits: “I Sure Can Smell the Rain,” “Every Once in a While,” “Goodbye Says It All,” “Down in Flames” and more. Parade applauded the new album when it premiered “I Sure Can Smell the Rain” writing the velvet-like harmonies “sets the scene for a stellar album to come” and that the “live feel adds an extra dimension to this poignant song, allowing the sweet twang and passionate energy to shine through.”

American Songwriter premiered the poignant “Dances With Her Shadow” adding the “melancholy vocals flatter the band, displaying their traditionalist form with which they timelessly approach music.”

“Making a live BlackHawk acoustic recording takes me back to when Henry, Van, and I started writing and singing together as a trio,” says Dave Robbins. “It’s representative of BlackHawk in its purist form, having old friends join us on stage and tried-and-true fans makes everything ‘just about right’ on that special night in Atlanta.”

“I especially love the acoustic nature of this collection because it casts these songs in the true spirit in which they were written,” adds Paul.

Just About Right: Live From Atlanta is out now and available everywhere music is sold or streamed.

SINGLE REVIEW: "BROTHERS OF THE SOUTHLAND" - BLACKHAWK

SINGLE: "Brothers of the Southland"
ARTIST: Blackhawk
REVIEWER: Han Van Meegerin
Follow Han on Twitter at @HanVanMeegerin

Brothers of the Southland is the lead single off of Blackhawk's new album that is fittingly titled, “Brothers of the Southland.” It is a revival of the tune that debuted on Blackhawk's album "Spirit Dancers" that was released in 2002.

Lead singers Henry Paul and Dave Robbin provide a vocal uniqueness that drawls the listener in with the opening lyrics. However, the real treat comes in the verses that follow and pay tribute to some legends and heavy hitters of the southern rock genre. These are men that stood tall and stood true as brothers that shaped this style of music.

Songs that give tribute are important. They not only serve the purpose of recognizing the efforts and the inspirations of those that blazed an a earlier path, but also potentially introduce the honorees to another generation of fans.

Blackhawk, with their "Brothers of the the Southland”, bear witness to the great band members from The Marshall Tucker Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers and The Outlaws. For this, we owe them our gratitude and, if nothing else, a respectful tip of our hat.

The new cd is available for PRE-ORDER on both iTunes and Amazon with an expected release date of July 8, 2014.

COUNTRY REWIND: "Almost a Memory Now" - Blackhawk

There were so many good bands in the decade that truly made country, the 90's. Blackhawk was one of my favorite bands, yet so underrated and their music was almost under the country radar. Their sound was unique and truly stood out in the plentitude of Garth Brooks and Clint Black radio play.
