THE DEAD SOUTH SHARE NEW SONG “BLUE TRASH,” A FRIENDLY WINK AT BLUEGRASS TRADITIONALISM

September schedule includes IBMA Bluegrass Ramble showcases, in-stores at Rough Trade (Brooklyn) and Grimey's (Nashville).

USA SERVED COLD TOUR presented by Live Nation Ones To Watch and SiriusXM Bluegrass Junction rolls in November.

"Saskatchewan’s The Dead South draws you in with their unique storytelling, foot-stomping bluegrass-folk." - Billboard

"They earn their keep with truly distinctive touches, such as metal-inflected banjo and “fiddling” on a cello." - Chicago Reader

Tangy banjo and back chop beats drive “Blue Trash,” the third song from The Dead South’s forthcoming Sugar & Joy. Out today, “Blue Trash” is a playful acknowledgement that along their road from unsigned Canadian string set to Gold Certified, JUNO Award winning, Billboard charting band, some have taken issue with the prairie pickers’ progressive style. “Blue Trash,” built on a perfectly bluegrassy banjo lick, is about the importance of expressing their own musical hearts, on their own terms.

For more from Sugar & Joy, you can get weird and get friendly with “Alabama People,” a headbanging bluegrass tune released last month. Written and recorded on the spot, the song’s spontaneous origin shows a band fully in the moment, inspired by the experience and channeling the energy of place (The Nutthouse) and people (producer Jimmy Nutt, assistant engineer Cody Simmons, visits from members of The Swampers, late nights with the locals at Champy’s Shoals). Beyond its two minutes of stomping swagger, “Alabama People” also feels like a snapshot, Eggleston-style, a vivid, unsettling, evocative vignette.

As the release date for Sugar & Joy nears (October 11, 2019), The Dead South’s fall schedule includes stops in NYC, Raleigh and Nashville in September for an in-store at Rough Trade (9/24), multiple showcases at this year’s World of Bluegrass, and a stop at Grimey’s in Nashville (9/28). The band’s USA SERVED COLD tour, presented by Live Nation Ones To Watch and SiriusXM Bluegrass Junction, has also expanded to include new west coast dates.

The Dead South, a gold rush vibing four-piece acoustic bluegrass set from Saskatchewan, infuse the genre's traditional trappings with an air of frontier recklessness, whiskey breakfasts and grizzled tin-pan showmanship. The sound, built on a taut configuration of cello, mandolin, banjo and guitar, speeds like a train past polite definitions of bluegrass into the grittier, rowdier spaces of the traditional world. The gold-certified, JUNO Award winning band's original and current lineup includes the gnarled baritone of Nate Hilts, Scott Pringle on mandolin, whistling cellist Danny Kenyon and virtuosic banjo player Colton Crawford. The four-piece, string-driven approach puts the interplay of unique and versatile voices front and centre, with Hilts, Pringle and Kenyon all sharing lead vocal duties.

Sugar & Joy will be released on October 11, 2019.

BRETT KISSEL TAKES HOME 2019 CCMA APPLE MUSIC FANS' CHOICE AWARD

After taking the lead as the most nominated male acts for the 2019 CCMA Awards, Country artist Brett Kissel was granted the well-deserved Apple Music Fans’ Choice Award. This most recent win adds to the lengthy list of the now Nashville-based artist’s achievements including his previous CCMA win for Interactive Artist of the Year and the 2019 Juno Award (equivalent to a GRAMMY) for Country Album of the Year for his album, We Were That Song among many others (see here).

In the midst of his big win, Kissel has made his official stateside debut with the release of his new single, “Drink About Me” along with the music video for the track which features Bachelor Nation fan favorites Kaitlyn Bristowe and Jason Tartick.

The video premiered on Entertainment Tonight and PEOPLE Magazine released a behind-the-scenes photo diary from the video shoot (see here). The song is currently featured on many editorial playlists on Amazon Music, Apple Music, Pandora and Spotify as Brett is starting to build quite a buzz here in the states.

BRETT KISSEL WINS BIG ...

Canadian Country vocalist Brett Kissel was awarded the coveted Juno award for Country Album of the Year for his album, We Were That Song. Presented by The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the awards took place in London, Ontario on Sunday, March 17. This is the second Juno win for Kissel, who won in 2014 for Breakthrough Artist of the Year. He was the first country artist to take home the title in 17 years (since Shania Twain).

The 2019 Juno Awards capped off an amazing weekend for the country singer. Just a few days prior to Kissel winning the Juno, he was awarded a Gold record for his smash single “Anthem” (his seventh Gold record) and a “Double Road to Gold” plaque by CIMA, where he was one of the few artists to qualify in the 12-month eligibility period, for his massive 2018 “We Were That Song” tour that saw him perform over 110 dates in every province and territory in Canada.

“What an amazing weekend,” commented a jubilant Kissel. “I’ve worked so hard this past year and put so many miles on the tour bus. It’s wonderful to have this recognition from the industry and fans.”

Among his other accolades are he was named the International Artist of the Year at the 2017 Worldwide Radio Summit in Hollywood, CA (an honor bestowed upon Ed Sheeran and Adele in the last two years respectively). He is the 2017 and 2018 Canadian Country Music Awards’ Male Vocalist of the Year, 4x Winner at the 2016 CCMA Awards, 12x Billboard Canadian Top 10 Singles chart, and more.

Kissel wrapped up 2018 by being the most played Canadian artist at Canadian country radio, the most consumed male Canadian country artist (sales, downloads, streams), and had the most comprehensive tour in Canadian history, which included multiple shows in major markets across Canada.

The 2019 Juno Awards took place at Budweiser Gardens arena in London, Ontario and was televised live nationally on CBC. The Juno Awards are presented annually to Canadian musical artists and bands to acknowledge their artistic and technical achievements in all aspects of music and are seen as the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy Awards.

Visit www.brettkissel.com for more information. More dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

HAVE YOU HEARD ROBBY JOHNSON'S "FEEL GOOD SONG'?

Nearly 3 million people viewed the video for Canadian country newcomer Robby Johnson's debut single. "South of Me". These views have pushed him from "independent artist" to a deal with Contrast Music for distribution in North America through Sony RED Distribution as he kicks his follow up single, "Feel Good Song" into full gear.

Johnson has garnered praise and recognition from fans, various media outlets (including ours, we love him), stations that have gotten the clue and added the single to their playlists, and huge viewer numbers for his videos. Because of this positive response, Sony RED will be taking on the management of both the digital and physical releases of "Feel Good Song", it's video and Robby's upcoming CD.

Quickly gaining traction as the obviously titled "Feel Good Song" of the summer season, this song provides the musical good feeling that fans are connecting with. Ryan Smith, the creative mind responsible for the hit video "My Kind of Party" by Jason Aldean, will reconnect with Johnson and take the reigns for Robby's new video. Stay tuned!

NEW ARTIST VIDEO: "FALLIN' OVER YOU" - CHAD BROWNLEE

A testament to his drive and talent, Chad Brownlee (MDM Recordings Inc. / Universal Music Canada) is an extraordinary example of what one person can achieve. Although he may focus on living in the moment and absorbing every treasured second with his fans while performing on stage, Brownlee has already lived a life many would argue could fill multiple lifetimes. An award-winning singer, songwriter, philanthropist and former NHL draft pick, country music artist Brownlee is by definition a renaissance man, who lives by the credence that “opportunity lies along the path created by the choices you make.”

In recent years his singles have rapidly climbed the country music charts, with multiple singles cracking Top 10, including “Listen”, “Smoke In The Rain” and “Crash”. In February 2014 he released the single “Fallin’ Over You” off his forthcoming album.

Shares Brownlee, “Fallin' Over You has become one of my favorite songs to sing because of the passion that comes out of the melody and lyrics. You know that feeling you get when you realize that a certain someone has taken a hold of you in the best way possible? That's what this song is all about. That feeling of freedom, of flying, and falling without worrying where you're going to land.”
