#CONCERTREVIEW - LESSONS FROM A BACK ROW PEW: JOSEPH HABEDANK - GOLDSBORO, NC

Date: 1/7/2024
Venue: Faith Free Will Baptist Church - Goldsboro, NC
Reviewer: Jennifer Smith

Most of the time, you'll hear a song and you'll think "Hmmm, I like that song" and you let it run as background music while you do other things. Then if you're lucky, a song will come along that makes you put whatever you were doing to a stop and you really listen to what it's saying and all you can say is "Wow." I wasn't just lucky, I was blessed because I had 2 of them hit me that way from the same artist -"24 Hours" and "The Basement" by Joseph Habedank. When you're going through something and you're really struggling, it's songs like these that completely change your perspective on things.

I immediately wanted to find out more about this guy - who he was, his story, did he write his own music. I did my research, read old articles, watched some of his interviews and performances on Youtube and talked to some friends who knew him on a more personal level. As someone who is getting her own life back on track and focusing on her faith, I knew Joseph and his music would be an integral part of that process as his music is based on his own faith and he doesn't just write and sing about it to bring in a buck, he lives it "24 Hours" a day.

Joseph, a 2 time Grammy nominee, 3 time GMA Dove Award winner, 6 time fan voted solo artist of the year and former lead singer-songwriter of the gospel group The Perrys,  developed an ulcer in his throat in 2008 and began using prescription opioids for his pain. This turned into a years long addiction to oxycodone and hydrocodone. In the middle of his struggles, he met his wife and best friend, Lindsay, who loved him and stayed by his side through the battle which he eventually won with the help of Musicares, who paid for and helped place him in a recovery center, and through his trust in God. His story is a life changer, not just for him but for the many out there who have heard his testimony, his music and have come to his shows. I knew I had to go to a show if he ever made it out my way. I got that opportunity last night when his 2024 Winter Tour included a stop at Faith Baptist Church in Goldsboro, NC.

When I arrived at the show, the parking lot was PACKED. I knew this was going to be a special night. I walked into the auditorium and grabbed one of the few available seats and met Lindsay at the merchandise table because I had offered to help sell merchandise after the show. While standing in the lobby waiting on Lindsay, I talked to an older gentleman who asked me if I knew who this Habedank guy was, he'd never heard of him and he hoped he was really a Christian singer because so many that claim to be for the sake of the spotlight turn out to be something different than how they portray themselves. I told him that I was familiar with him and I could promise him that he would leave the show a different person that he was when he walked in the door. He said "I hope you're right because I need a change."

The show started and you could feel a different energy in the room, a stronger energy than you usually encounter at a church performance, a deeper energy. I knew this was going to be special and I was not wrong. He came on stage and started the set with "Welcome Home" and followed it up with "Religion Isn't Working" which scored a huge round of applause. He talked about his life growing up in church, how much he loved it and debuted a new unreleased song about his home church. It made me think of my church growing up and sitting in those pews. I didn't know it then, but those pews were more than just a place to sit and hear some man talk while your stomach growled but they were life lessons that most don't appreciate until years later.  I know I sure appreciate it now.

He told his story about addiction and how he recently reached 10 years sobriety and since kicking his addiction, his shows are now testimonies set to music, not just another concert. He's wanting to make a difference in lives by talking about the difference in his. That's certainly something this world needs, honesty and vulnerability and the want to help others. He sang one of his newer songs, "The Basement" and you could literally hear people paying attention. Yes, hear them because it was so quiet other than his voice singing about what goes on in that dirty, dingy room of redeeming therapy that no one wants to talk about. He talked about it and people listened. There were many in the room who were either addicts themselves to something or they loved someone who is dealing with the battle and you could see the tears in their eyes as the intently listened to the message. There was a group of women from a local recovery center in the audience who gave him a standing ovation with their most heartfelt applause. It made him emotional.

Before he got into more music, he brought out Pastor Marc Pritchett from the Northridge Church in Thomaston, GA who also helps run "Destiny Rescue" which is an organization that operates rescue, reintegration and prevention programs in multiple countries to help save child sex trafficking victims. Their story was a realization of just how big this problem is, not just in other countries but here in the United States. If you want to find out more about this amazing group of people and help the cause to save our children, go to www.destinyrescue.org.

Joseph came back out and sang "The Beauty in the Blood", "Never No Never, and wrapped up the night with "Here He Comes."

I went back out to the merch table and that same man from the start of the show walked up to me and thanked me for telling him what I did about Joseph because he almost got up and left before the show even started because he had been turned off by so many other artists. He purchased all 5 CD's. Joseph came out a little while later, stood at the front door of the church, made sure to thank each and every person for coming, he took pictures and just stood and was "one of them" for awhile. Everyone left with a smile on their face and I promise you that just as I told that man, everyone that walked out that door walked out a different person than they were when they walked in. THAT is testimony. THAT is what music with a real message does. It changes people. It changed me.

Thank you Joseph for just being the best kind of human being and for your kindness, for writing and performing music that makes a difference and for a night I'll never forget.

CONCERT REVIEW: JASON CRABB BRINGS HIS MUSICAL TRUTH AND PERSONAL CONVICTION TO KINSTON, NC

Let me start this review by saying if you have never seen Jason Crabb perform live, make it a point to go. He's been in my area many times but I always had a reason here or there as to why I never made it to a show. I saw he was coming within a 2 hour drive this time so I made it a point to go and check it off my bucket list. WOW. I am soooo glad I did. I left there a changed person. I believe Jason is one of the best songwriters the music industry has been blessed with. His words change lives.

I arrived at the venue a couple of hours early. Thanks to his wonderful publicist, Aaron, I was able to have some quiet, one on one time with Jason before the show to just sit and talk about his life, his music and his faith. What an amazing conversation. You can read the interview HERE.  There is something so refreshing about an artist who isn't afraid of who they really are, who is willing to show their authenticity and speak their mind even if it isn't freely accepted by today's society. That's what makes Jason Crabb a stand out, not only in a commercialized industry but as an every day person. He says his truth, he stands by his words, he expresses his love of God and his faith in a very open and honest way and he shares his message in the words of each song he sings. You won't hear words come out of his mouth that he doesn't believe or mean. You won't hear lyrics that make you question the content of his music. He's real, he's genuine and he's exactly who he is. His music, stories, testimony and just his personal delivery of all three is a much needed and much welcomed message of encouragement.

Jason took the stage with his band and immediately commanded the attention of the crowd, the applause and cheers were pretty loud. I love the way he interacts with people. He doesn't treat them as fans, he treats them as friends. This was a room full of friends to him. He laughed with us, joked with us and told the best stories. Now let's talk about that voice. WOW. I knew he could sing because I've been a fan for years but to hear him live is a whole new experience. His voice is so strong and he hits every note spot on. You can't help but sit there with a stupid grin on your face listening to him. I know I wasn't the only one looking like that. He sings with a distinct, yet humble, self-confidence and a welcome positivity. He is a great guitar player too. I had already forewarned him not to look at me because I would be crying during some of his songs and his response? "Well then we'll both be crying."

He sang a variety of songs - "Sometimes I Cry", "Just as I Am" and a huge list of older ones and he brought out his newer ones like "Good Morning Mercy" (his duet single with country artist Dylan Scott) and "Do It For You".

The highlight of the night was when he brought out his daughter, Ashleigh. She is an up and coming singer/songwriter and author of a book she's been working on. What an impressive young lady she was. She sang a beautiful rendition of "Great is Thy Faithfulness". The audience loved her performance so much that Jason kept her on stage for awhile and she sang her own composition, a hauntingly personal and amazing song that I unfortunately missed the name of but when if she releases it as a single, I'll be all over it. It was soooo good. Her voice is simple yet complex and stunning. She stayed on for a duet of the Crabb Family favorite, "Please Forgive Me" which was written by Gerald Crabb.

This night was one I'll never forget and one that changed my life in a span of about 3 hours. Thank you both for one of the best performances I've ever been blessed to witness.

One word usually comes to mind when one mentions The Oak Ridge Boys - legends. I mean they've accomplished so much in the past 40+ years: surviving multiple lineup changes, winning every award a musical group can win, performing in Russia, multiple #1 hits including "Elvira", one of the most played songs of 1981, sold over 40 MILLION albums, became members of the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame and so many other things I can't even begin to name. They've done it all. Legend is described as "an extremely famous person or notorious person, especially in a particular field". Sure, that describes them pretty spot on but there is another word that I believe defines them more accurately - heroes. The definition of hero is "a person noted for acts of fine quality and greatly admired." I think that defines Joe Bonsall, Duane Allen, Richard Sterban and William Lee Golden perfectly, at least to me and a million other people who love them. Aside from their music which has affected so many people, their generosity and kindness has made even more of an impression. They've give back in so many ways over the years through charity work, events and causes as well as personally with their time and wisdom. Ask any longtime fan what stands out most about any of these men and I can almost guarantee that "Elvira" won't be the first answer you get. You'll hear recollections of personal connection and friendship. You'll hear stories of ways they've given back, how they've helped up and coming artists and songwriters, how they've gone out of their way to help anyone who needed it, even an independent music promoter as myself. I can speak from experience as to their kindness and caring. I can also attest that it's more than music that drives The Oak Ridge Boys to keep going after 40 years, although they do love what they do. It's the love of performing, sharing moments with friends and fans, and giving them something to take with them that lasts long after the last note is sung. Just look at the expressions throughout the audience at any ORB show if you want to see it for yourself, They leave lasting memories, they leave hearts full and smiles on faces.

The Oak Ridge Boys brought their Celebration 2017 Tour to the Winston Salem, NC Fairgrounds last weekend and performed to an excited crowd that came from all corners of the country to sing along with four of the finest voices in country music. The building was abuzz with conversations of past memories of their first Oaks show, fans saying they had caught a glimpse of one or more of the Oaks behind the security gate by the buses, people talking about their favorite songs, and the anticipation of those who held a hard to get meet and greet pass about finally meeting the Boys and getting a chance to say hello. There were already lines at the merchandise table of those waiting to purchase their latest music, books and shirts. You could feel the energy in the air and the show hadn't even started yet. One of the best things about pre-show is the time you get to spend with other friends and fans. I was lucky during this show to spend quailty time with some friends who also made the journey to the show - David Britt, a singer/songwriter from Charlotte, NC whom I've been good friends online with for several years, Tammie Davis, a singer/songwriter from Clemmons, NC and her husband and daughter, Brian Carpenter from HLE Radio, and I was able to have time with my best friend of 32 years, Dana.

The night started with a strong performance by NC artist, Tiffany Ashton. Tiffany is one of Renegade Radio. Nashville's New Faces of Country 2017. She won the 2016 Carolina Music Video of the Year Award for "The Only Guy", the 2015 Hollywood Music in Media Country Artist of the Year Award, 2015 Charlotte Music's Songwriter of the Year Award and Women in Country Award. She got the crowd ready with great, high energy set.

The Oaks took the stage around 8pm, backed by the incredible Mighty Oaks Band. Now, before I dive right into the show, I gotta take a minute to give props to the band. The Mighty Oaks are some of music's most talented musicians. They are first class in their playing and first class in who they are. You really won't find a better group of guys or a harder working group of people..

The band consists of:

Rex Wiseman (fiddle, steel, mandolin, guitar) who joined in 2006 and previously played with John Conlee, Rhonda Vincent and other. Rex is also an amazing solo performer, releasing his own bluegrass CD in 2017, "Welcome Home", that includes vocals from the Oaks, Rhonda Vincent, Jimmy Fortune and more. You can pick up the CD at any Oaks show or online.

Ron Fairchild (keyboards) is the son of the Tommy Fairchild who played piano for the group from 1957-1972 and has a 20 year connection with the Oaks. Ronnie is somewhat the "class clown" always laughing and doing something funny during each show.

Roger Eaton (lead guitar) joined the band in 2014. Roger brings years of experience with him having played with Barbara Mandrell, Lorrie Morgan, Joe Diffie and Tanya Tucker. Roger also does production for other artists. He is truly one of the finest guitar players to ever grace a stage.

Scotty Simpson (bass guitar) came on board having performed with Tanya Tucker, Pam Tillis, Kevin Sharp and Travis Tritt. He has been hard at work putting together his first solo album and writing his own music. The CD is set to release soon. One noticeable thing about him, you'll always see a smile on his face and he'll always put one on yours.

Jeffrey Douglas (guitar and dobro) has been with the Oaks as a band tech since 1995 and was later promoted to stage manager. In 1999, he stepped in to play guitar and in 2004, added dobro to his resume. He's always on stage next to Rex and who knows what the two of them are gonna do. Just keep an eye on the left side of the stage.

Austin Curcuruto (drums) recently replaced David Northrop in 2017 when David left the band to tour with Boz Skaggs. Austin is the youngest member of the band, but that doesn't mean he's green when it comes to experience. In 2010, he was named runner up for Up and Coming Drummer by Modern Drummer and he's toured with artists such as Craig Campbell, Bo Bice, Krystal Keith and more. He also works with other artists in his off road time.

So, back to the show ... what can I say other than it was everything I expected, and like every show, even more. The Oak Ridge Boys are like a fine wine, they really do seem to get better with age. They perform from right from their hearts to ours. Their performance is proof that when you love what you're doing, it's no longer a job. The joy of performing is more than obvious by the banter, the smiles, the laughter and the years of friendship. It's what keeps these men going, performing over 100 shows a year, most being sellout performances. The crowd started roaring and the applause was almost deafening when the familiar announcement came over the speaker announcing "The Legendary Oak Ridge Boys". Joe, Duane, Richard and William Lee hit the stage and the fun began. They had fans on their feet and singing along with every word of favorites including "Dream On", "Sail Away", "Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight", "Trying to Love Two Women", "Touch a Hand, Make a Friend", "American Made", "Come on In", "Thank God for Kids", "Y'all Come Back Saloon", "Time Has Made a Change in Me", and and more. They also performed a few of their favorite southern gospel tunes. The set lasted at least 90 minutes if not more, with no breaks. The band sounded amazing. They wrapped up the night with a rousing sing along of "Elvira" and "Bobbie Sue" with everyone standing and cheering, hoping for an encore. The crowd loved it and even after they left the stage, fans had the familiar concert "afterglow" about them, talking about their favorite part of the show and how great the show was as a whole. I always love walking through a crowd just as a show ends and hearing the excitement, the stories, the "I wish it wasn't over yets". You can't help but see how much the Oaks are admired and appreciated and how much they've positively impacted their fans ... isn't that really more definitive of heroes than simply legends?

There are a few more dates through the fall of the Celebration Tour before the Christmas tour kicks off in the winter. If they're in your area, buy a ticket and experience one of the best shows you'll ever have the chance to be a part of, not just see. Check their website for ticket info - www.oakridgeboys.com.

P.S. - If you happen to see Darrick Kinslow (tour manager), Jon  Mir (Operations Manager/Photographer/Jack of All Trades), Darrell Bowling (bus driver and security), Marko Hunt (Sound), Mike Campbell (Merchandise), Zeke (monitors) or any other members of the Oaks crew, take a minute to thank them for what they do. A lot of work goes into each and every show and these guys are every part as important as the Oaks and band members in making each show a success and deserve appreciation.

CONCERT REVIEW: OAK RIDGE BOYS CELEBRATION TOUR 2017 - ALABAMA THEATRE, MYRTLE BEACH, SC

Let me preface this review by saying when you walk out onto your hotel room balcony and see this, you know the tone has been set for a good time ...

The Boys are back in town! Any time the Oak Ridge Boys are in Myrtle Beach, SC, the skies are instantly bluer, the sun shines brighter and the day is a good day. This time, they were in town for another show at the beautiful Alabama Theater at Barefoot Landing on April 1. Seriously, no joke!

I arrived at the theater about an hour or so before showtime for some "pre-crowd" time with the Boys, the crew, to catch up, get some hugs, and just spend some quality time with mutual friends who have traveled in from various places for the show. This is always my favorite part of "Oaks Day", the friendship, the music is just an added plus. Everyone is always so friendly and fun to be around. You really can't beat this group of people. I wish every artist/crew/fan base was as friendly and kind as the this group. It really makes a difference. When you treat your fans as friends instead of walking wallets and your crew as family instead of simply hired hands, it creates a positive, encouraging environment for everyone and that's what this show is each and every time. Thanks to this entire crew of hardworking guys, the Oak Ridge Boys tour is one well oiled machine that keeps on rolling.

As always at the Alabama Theatre and most other shows, this was a sell out crowd and a very anxious and excited one. You could hear stories about the Oaks rumbling through the audience, people bonding over their ORB experiences, talking about their favorite songs and there were new friendships being made and old friends reconnecting. It really is such a warm and inviting place to be.

The hardest working tour manager in the business, Darrick, took the stage to tell the audience a little background on the history of the Country Music Hall of Fame members, to promote some of the newest merchandise and to .. well ... just be Darrick. As Darrick left the stage, the lights dimmed and the familiar music of the show opening started with the booming voice introducing "THE OAK RIDGE BOYS". The applause was nearly deafening. The lights came back up and on the stage stood four of the reasons God made country music - Joe Bonsall, Duane Allen, William Lee Golden and Richard Sterban and one of the best bands to ever back a group, The Mighty Oaks.

Country, pop, and gospel all came together as one enjoyable evening with no borders. The night was just good music that made everyone in that room smile and feel good. That's what these guys are all about and that's exactly how they became one of the most loved groups in music. The night was filled with hits that had everyone up and moving and had some simply seat dancing, but one thing we all did was smile. Let's talk set list ... how many artists do you know these days that play a set list of over 20 songs and that do it without an opener or without a break between, just go from song to song to song and constantly being animated? Not too many these days but the Oaks do it, night after night, over 100 nights a year, sometimes two shows a day and each song sounds like it's the first time they've performed it, fresh and new. They sounded great and don't get me started on the Mighty Oaks Band because this review would go another two pages on their talent and the great guys that stand in the background night after night. While I'm on that subject, if you get a chance, say hi and thank you to these incredible musicians. Let them know you appreciate what they do.

If you've never been to an Oaks show, you probably don't get "it". Once you see them, "it" will sink in, I promise you. This is what a concert should be: enjoyable for all ages, full of music you actually can sing along to and an atmosphere that will have you in a good mood. One of my favorite new Oaks songs is sung with lead vocals by William Lee Golden, "Time Has Made a Change in Me". That may be and is expected with a history of 40+ years, when it comes to their music, time stands still. The music of the Oak Ridge Boys stands just as firm as the mighty oak and withstands the test of time and the weathering of years.

The Boys are back at the Alabama Theatre on Saturday, October 21 at 7:00pm.

CONCERT REVIEW / PHOTOS: MARK CHESNUTT WITH SPECIAL GUEST BRYAN MAYER - TRENTON, NC - 9/17/16

Event: Benefit for Brock's Mill Pond Featuring Mark Chesnutt and Special Guest Bryan Mayer

Fans been missing tradition in country music for awhile now - the twang, the heart and the very soul of what makes country music so different than any other genre. Well, I was lucky enough to find those missing elements this past Saturday night in Trenton, NC with a phenomenal performance by Mark Chesnutt. The genre that means so much to it's fans was brought the genre back to life while simultaneously taking fans back to memories of what country music was meant to be and gave them a big reason to smile.

Saturday was a day to celebrate the heritage and history of this small rural community. The day began with the Heritage Festival which paid homage to rural agricultural life in southeastern North Carolina.  Activities included a parade, a vintage car show, a "Little Miss Heritage Festival" pageant, and hands-on heritage skills including looping tobacco, basket making, making butter, spinning yarn and quilting among others. There was a stage that featured local talent and lots of locally prepared foods. The star of the event and the reason for Saturday night's main event was Brock's Mill which was originally built in the mid 1700’s and the beautiful surrounding pond which is a favorite for canoeing and kayaking.

A little background on the importance and relevance of Brock's Mill Pond, which is located on Highway 58 South in Trenton, NC. There was a Revolutionary War deed to a pond in this particular area dated around 1738 or 1739. Records show that in 1779, Richard Sharp and Elizabeth Reynolds of Craven County sold the land to Lewis Bryan, who in turn, sold the property to Anthony Hatch in 1796 and was known as Hatch’s Mill. There were several sales of the property in the following years until 1899 when J.P. Brogden sold it to W.H. Hammond and Furnifold Brock. A year later, Mr. Brock bought out his partner’s share and had the deed signed over to his wife, Myrtle Foscue Brock. This sale included the onsite grist mill. Goods produced at the mill included corn meal, grits and cracked corn for livestock or chicken feed. The saw mill operated on the site until the early 1940’s. In 1917, Mr. Brock installed a turbine generator to provide electricity for the town of Trenton. Late in the afternoon, the turbine was turned on creating power for Trenton’s residents. At 10 pm the lights blinked twice signifying that the power would be cut off in fifteen minutes. This service continued until Tidewater Power Company purchased the franchise. The pond itself is fed by underground springs as well as Crooked Run Creek. Only a small portion of the 133 acres can be seen from Highway 58. The total area of the pond is 122 acres of water and 11 acres of land including small islands. The outlet for the pond drains the water into the Trent River southeast of the town of Trenton. From what we understand, there are no events currently being held at the pond which is why private funds are being raised to restore the pond, building and surrounding area for community use. There will be no tax supported dollars to make this happen, it is solely based on community efforts in fundraising.

Mark Chesnutt joined the fundraising efforts this year along with NC's own Bryan Mayer. Funds raised will go toward the maintenance and the possible formation of a foundation to run the facility. If that comes to fruition, then there could potentially be a longstanding series of events and activities to continue to bring people to the area.

Before the show, VIP ticket holders were treated to some one on one time with Mark and I have to say, his meet and greets are so much more than that. They're stories told between fan and artist, memories long forgotten ... they're personal connections with a true, humble country gentleman. Mark made every person feel appreciated and didn't rush them in and out like the usual cattle call. I really thought highly of him for that. These days, during most meet and greets, fans are treated like numbers, very insignifcant for the sake of time. Mark made time and that went a long way with those of us who were lucky enough to shake his hand and thank him for his contributions to country music.

Bryan Mayer kicked off the show with an energetic set which included covers and originals. The Nine North Records artist is a hometown favorite around this area and had a huge turnout of friends and family. The crowd was dancing along and singing every word. It was great to see such a big amount of support for this guy, he's a really good artist. Covers included Eric Church, Chris Janson and Johnny Cash among others and he performed music from his own album including his latest single "Lil' Bit Naughty" and the one that started it all for him, "This is Me". Bryan's voice is just as towering as his 6'7" stature. There's nothing small about this guy or his talent. Bryan is currently recording in Nashville, working on his upcoming CD to be released later this year.

Mark Chesnutt took the stage to some of the loudest applause I think I've ever heard. These people were ready for some serious country music and Mark is just the one to deliver it. He kept this show pretty emotional by reviving old heart tugging favorites like "Too Cold At Home", "Almost Goodbye", "I'll Think of Something", "Thank God for Believers" and the familiar lonesome whine of the steel guitar during "Rollin' with the Flow". He may be older, but his love of country music hasn't changed at all and his voice hasn't aged a bit. His music found a place in me that I'd long forgotten existed, a place deep where the lyrics of a great song combined with the perfect vocal emotion hits pretty hard, right smack in the middle of my soul and when he hit the chorus of "Almost Goodbye", before I knew it, the tears rolled down my cheeks. What a delivery! He kicked it into high gear with his other country radio hits like "Brother Jukebox", "Bubba Shot the Jukebox", "Goin' Through the Big D" and "Gonna Get a Life". This show made me long for the days when dancing the Texas Waltz around a sawdust floor was what everyone was doing on a Saturday night. It made me miss the two step, the days when Stetson hats were in, and where it wasn't a country song unless there was fiddle and steel. Where did those days go? Those days seemingly retired with Strait and died with Jennings and Jones, however more and more traditional artists are making comebacks and more new artists are taking the traditional route such as William Michael Morgan, Mo Pitney, Sturgill Simpson, Whitey Morgan and others, Sure would be nice to "sang" to "twang" again.

Thank God for those who still believe in the twang, the tradition and the stories. Those are my heroes. Mark Chesnutt is my hero.

Mark recently released a new CD, "Tradition Lives" and his new single, "Oughta Miss Me By Now" is currently #44 on the charts. Please call your local stations and let them know you want to hear it!

Many thanks to Mark, Bryan, Jones County and WRNS FM for making another memory for me and for a room full of die hard country music fans.

I feel like I write the same review every time I see the Oak Ridge Boys play, but when you're revewing a consistently great show, it's hard not to. Country Music Hall of Famers Joe Bonsall, Duane Allen, Richard Sterban and William Lee Golden once again proved why they are considered true musical legends and superstars with a packed house in Myrtle Beach, SC this past Saturday night, 9/10/16. These shows are my favorite days of the year. They're better than Christmas and my birthday.

There is this unexplainable energy that you can feel the minute you walk in the door to the Alabama Theatre when there's an Oak Ridge Boys show. You know just from the excitement of the fans waiting for those doors to open that it's gonna be a good night. I make a point to pay attention to venue atmosphere and the attitude of their staff as well as how helpful the staff is to patrons. I can say that the Alabama Theatre is hands down one of my favorite venues. The venue is beautiful, always clean and the acoustics are fantastic. The staff are always smiling, proactive in assisting people with locating their seats, and always answer questions with kindness and an eager enthusiasm.

Just before the show, the Oaks hold their meet and greet which is always a good time. When it comes to meet and greets, these guys are the best. They know their fans names, their faces, their family members, and what's going on with them. They care enough to pay attention to these things and that's what makes them stand out among so many others. They take the time to sign items, to shake hands, to hug and to talk to their fans, they don't just take 2 seconds, snap a pic and push them out the door. It's obvious by the fact that their shows sell out night after night that this kind of attention is what keeps fans coming back over and over again. Shows at this particular venue are more than a bunch of strangers coming together, it's more of a family of sorts. You may come in a stranger, but you'll meet so many friendly people by the end of that night that you'll leave more of a friend. That's what so special about the Oaks and the Alabama Theatre audience.

At 7:00pm, the lights in the auditorium went dark and the stage lights came on. The show began with the deep booming introduction, "Ladies and gentlemen, the legendary Oak Ridge Boys" and the boys took stage to a standing ovation, thundering applause and all kinds of whoops and hollers. There's just a powerful energy that fills the room that you just have to experience to understand. It's an obvious surrounding of love. It really makes a heart feel good.

The Oaks came out and performed the hits like "Everyday", "American Made", and "Dream On" much to the pleasure of the hundreds of fans dancing in their seats, singing along at the top of their lungs. The Oaks are known for their deep patriotism and love of this amazing country we are blessed to live in and they never fail to take a few quiet moments to salute those in the audience who are veterans or currently fighting for our freedom. With the current political climate, I think we need a reminder of how lucky we are to live in a country that allows us the freedom to come to events such as this, to sing what we want to, and to listen to the music that moves us. Tonight, I felt that blessing. Every Oak Ridge Boys show is such a reminder and this show was no different. Joe Bonsall's love of God and country is so very evident and when he gets riled up, the audience gets riled up with him and it's such a cool thing to be a part of.

The show rolled on with old favorites and new favorites as well as stories and humorous anecdotes as only Joe can relay them. One of my favorite moments of the night was William Lee Golden's obviously emotional performance of a new song, "Time Has Made a Change in Me" where he sings of  the passage of time and the years that have caught up with him, of loved ones who have passed on and the personal changes that have come with those years. When he took his sunglasses off and wiped tears from his eyes, I think all of us wiped those same tears. They followed up with everyone's favorite sing along and two of their biggest hits, "Elvira" and "Bobbie Sue", with  members of the incredible Mighty Oaks Band jamming together and just having a great time. What a great way to end the evening.

I have to give huge love to the band and crew, some of the best people in the industry. The Mighty Oaks Band consists of Rex Wiseman (Fiddle/Steel/Guitar), Ron Fairchild (Keys), Scotty Simpson (Bass), Jeffrey Douglas (Acoustic Guitar), David Northrup (Drums), and Roger Eaton (Electric Guitar). These guys are the best of the best when it comes to Nashville musicians. Each has worked with legendary names other than the Oaks and they stand behind these four men every night. They're such a great group of guys, I just love them. The crew - Darrick, Marko, Zeke, Michael and everyone else are who keep these wheels turning and the show running smoothly, merchandise moving and making sure lights/sound are the best they can possibly be. It really takes a village to create a legacy and these guys are the bricks in the foundation. The next time you're at an Oaks show, be sure to say hello and thank these guys for what they do. They're all so much more than background, they're essential to each and every performance.

Saturday night left everyone in that room with another wonderful, lasting memory. This is what the Oaks are best at, leaving lasting memories and leaving the audience with a smile as they leave to head back home. I bet most of us were listening to Oaks songs in the car and singing all the way home.

CONCERT REVIEW: RAY SCOTT HOMECOMING SHOW IN ROXBORO, NC ON JUNE 3

When Ray Scott is coming to town, you know it's gonna be a good time but when he's coming to HIS hometown area, you know the bar just got raised a whole lot higher. Ray performed for friends, family and quite a few drunk friendly strangers this past weekend in Roxboro, NC and man was it hot and I'm not just talking about the sweltering heat. The women love Ray and honestly, I think some of the men may have had a manly man crush going on to. That's because Ray has this certain country "swaggertude" that people just love. Fans love that he is unapologetically Ray and he is who he is. He's the kind of guy you can drink a beer or twelve with and feel like you just sat down with a lifelong friend.

The show was held outside and it was a typical NC summer day, full of boob sweat, swamp crotch and melted makeup before you even got from the parking lot to the performance area. I definitely looked and felt like I'd gone a few rounds with Mike Tyson or either mated with a raccoon by the way my mascara had melted around my eyes but it was more than worth it for the show I was about to see.

There were two great opening acts, the Rock City Rollers who did an outstanding job of covering some classic rock hits and I gotta say, the young guitar player, Adam Snow (I think that was his name) was one of the best guitar players I've ever seen hands down. He had great vocals too. He broke out a version of Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" that damn near rivaled the original on quality. What a great set these guys put on.

Next up was local artist, Matt Boswell and the Hillbilly Blues Band. Matt was pretty impressive as well, great vocals and very entertaining to watch. I immediately downloaded his singles, "My Way of Life" and "Working Mans Prayer" on iTunes.

Even though the weather was questionable with severe thunderstorms forecast and lighting streaking across the sky in the distance, this didn't deter real country fans from sitting and enjoying a night of great music. Ray took the stage about 9pm and had a HUGE set list over more than 20 songs. Sadly, I only got to see about half of the show since the weather was getting bad in the direction I had to go but it was still a hell of a show. Ray is one of country's best and confusingly most underrated storytellers. He can tell a story better than Uncle Seuss ever could and that's what his songs are, stories. They're stories about life, probably about personal experiences if you know Ray, they're locker room stories set to music and they're stories that the every day man can relate to. You won't hear drum machines, auto tuner or overplayed screeching electric guitar during his show. What you will hear is simple yet undeniable country music that makes an impression. With his deep rich vocals and an amazing band made up of some of the best in the business, any Ray Scott show is more than worth your time, the drive and the ticket price. I'm glad I made the 4 hour drive for this one and I'd do it again. This time the drive lead me down the "high road" to one of the best shows I've ever seen.

This past Sunday was a pretty big day for country music (and sausage ...) fans in Richmond, VA. It was the day of the Jimmy Dean Music Festival, celebrating the life and music of their favorite local hero. The event was supposed to happen last year, however, due to Hurricane Joaquin, had to be rescheduled. The festival paid homage through song, story and appreciation to one of country music's legends, a well known television host and of course, the king of sausage. Jimmy Dean is perhaps best known for his classic hit "Big Bad John" and for hosting The Jimmy Dean Show which kick started the career of the Muppets' creator, puppeteer Jim Henson.

The show was an early afternoon show consisting of some amazing country music talent including Dean's former wife, Donna Meade, a wonderful honky tonk band, Brad Spivey and the Honky Tonk Experience, local performer Lynne Carnes and a new artist that left me completely without words (and that's a rare happening, ask anyone who knows me), Tony Jackson.

The opening performances of the festival paid respect to traditional country music, which was such a wonderful thing to hear. You don't hear much classic country anymore and each of the artists did a great job of taking us back in our minds to a time when the music itself was important and the quality of a song really mattered to the listener and the artist. Brad Spivey and the Honky Tonk Experience gave us just that, an experience. As they picked the strings of time and strummed their way through country hits like Emmylou Harris' "C'est la Vie", Merle Haggard's "The Runnin' Kind", and Kenny Rogers' "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town", I couldn't help but smile and get a little wet around the eyes with memories of road trips with my parents as a young girl in our 70's Pontiac Bonneville with the local country stations playing these fabulous songs. If I had only known then how much those songs would mean to me now and oh how I miss the whine of a steel guitar.

Next up was Donna Meade and Lynn Carnes with stories of Jimmy and performances of songs like Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It Through the Night" and the late Lynn Anderson's "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden." The audience was smiling, you could feel the energy in the room as we stepped back to a simpler and more thoughtful time in the world of country music for a few short hours. Donna took the microphone and introduced us to a new artist who was, well, for lack of a better word, outstanding. She came across Tony Jackson on Youtube and immediately reached out to him and helped him with recording. His current single, "Drink By Drink", is at #45 on the Music Row Charts and I can tell you that Tony is exactly what country music needs. He performed, in true classic country style, "Swingin' Doors" but it was when he took us on "The Grand Tour", that the room went silent. If you closed your eyes, you could feel the spirit of the Possum singing along and smiling that mischievous smile that we all miss so much. Donna came back out on stage and she and Tony sat on two stools and sang the George and Tammy duet, "Golden Rings" and it was perfect. To wind up the set, Donna, along with a fantastic church choir made us all ask the question "Why Me Lord" and "Put A Little Love" in all of our hearts.

Finally, it was time for the Oak Ridge Boys, the reason I made the four hour drive from the NC coast. I know y'all hear me go on and on about these four men and I talk your ears off about them and I won't apologize for that. Joe, Duane, Richard and William Lee are the reason I fell in love with music. They came along at a time when I hadn't yet really discovered how wonderful music is and to hear those undeniable harmonies and feel good songs really made me see why music meant so much to people and to them I am grateful for that. It's been a long ride from that time to now and it's one I wouldn't trade for the world. The Oaks are so much more than their music and the harmonies they sing, they create harmony for those around them and are the picture of kindness, generosity and of faith. They "get it". Their shows are always family friendly and project a fun and positive atmosphere. Their band members and crew reflect the same. When you go to an Oaks show, you KNOW you're gonna get a good time and take home memories that will last a life time. This show was no different.

The audience was in full swing, ready for more country goodness and the Oaks delivered from the minute they stepped on stage to the minute they left it. Their energy is contagious, making you dance in your seat and making some get up out of their seats and dance. Very few artists of their era still tour as regularly as they do and you can tell they sure do enjoy it. They bring over forty years of music to the stage every night and they sing those songs like it was the first time, every time. They don't just sing a few songs, they sing a set list that goes for nearly 2 hours! In that time, we celebrated being "American Made", took a trip down the legendary "Red Dirt Highway", felt the love "Down Deep Inside", sat down at "Mama's Table", took time to "Thank God for Kids", raised our glasses at the "Y'all Come Back Saloon", joined an "Ozark Mountain Jubilee", heard the story of "Big Bad John", rolled down the Tennessee River, and got reacquainted with "Elvira". As the song goes, "Time Has Made A Change in Me", but time hasn't made a change to the Oak Ridge Boys at all. They're the same guys with the same infectious attitudes and the same great harmonies you remember and they still love to tell their stories. I have to mention the Mighty Oaks band. What an amazing collection of talent. I really don't think there are any better musicians or people. The Mighty Oaks are just as much a part of an Oak Ridge Boys experience as the boys themselves.

Thank you to all of these amazing artists for a night that brought back so many memories that time had long locked away and for giving every one of us in attendance a reason to believe that although times have changed, the heart of country music still beats strong.

B105.1 hosted an amazing night of country music at the Madison Theatre in Covington, Kentucky. The concert was a benefit for the kids through the Toys for Tots foundation. The night kicked off with an energetic performance from Michael Ray, who scored his first #1 single in 2015 with "Kiss You in the Morning" and currently has a follow up hit out on country radio, "Real Men Love Jesus." Ray was followed by one of the hottest newcomers in country music this past year, Kelsea Ballerini, who has risen to the top of the country charts with her hits "Love Me Like You Mean It" and most recently "Dibs". The show was headlined by a group who has also made country headlines this year with their hits "Smoke" and "(This Ain't No) Drunk Dial", A Thousand Horses, whom I unfortunately had to miss as I had a 2 hour drive back home.

The Madison Theatre was packed in tight with the main floor deep from stage all the way to concessions, from one wall to the other with excited screaming fans standing shoulder to shoulder. There was no room for an additional single person on the main floor. This was no doubt a sold out show. Unfortunately, I didn't arrive in time for Michael Ray's set due to traffic. He had finished his set and the stage hands were working hard to clear the stage in preparation for Kelsea as I walked into the venue. As I walked in, a $1,000.00 check was being presented to Toys for Tots. Some fans took advantage of this short break to hit the concession stands while others decided to check out and participate in the silent auction which was being held to benefit. Once things settled down onstage, it was time for Kelsea Ballerini's performance.

Kelsea's live performance is filled with a fun, uplifting energy that will have you singing along to every line whether you know the song or not and if you don't know the words, you couldn't help but hum along. Kelsea began her set with a couple of tunes from her debut album, "The First Time", as well as a cover of Carrie Underwood's "Cowboy Cassanova". The rising star then performed her most recent radio hit as she claimed "Dibs" on the Cincinnati crowd, resulting in a very loud reception of applause and cheers. Kelsea would also perform her original songs such as "Yeah Boy", "Peter Pan" and one of my personal favorites "Square Pegs" from "The First Time" album. Kelsea is not one to avoid getting up close and personal with her fans. She sat on the edge of the stage, shaking hands, and taking selfies all throughout her performance. It's great to see an artist connect with the fans like Kelsea takes the time to do, not out of obligation but out of appreciation. You can tell she genuinely loves it.

As if the crowd wasn't already having a great time, Kelsea turned up the intensity and had the crowd dancing to a medley of dance covers featuring many popular hits from artists such as The Backstreet Boys, N*SYNC, Beyonce, and Christina Aguilera. With the night nearing an end, Kelsea had yet to perform her biggest and first #1  hit. She spoke to the crowd about songwriting and mentioned that she and her friends were listening to "this song" and began to play and sing Rihanna's "Take A Bow". She would mention that after listening to that song, she and her friends got to work at writing "Love Me Like You Mean It" and as she began to play, the crowd exploded with screams. Kelsea performed a 45 minute set that left the crowd begging for more!

The Toys for Tots foundation is a charitable organization run by directors who have all served in the United States Marine Corps. Per the official website of the Toys for Tots, "The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.". CONCERT REVIEW: CLINT BLACK FEATURING JUSTIN BRYAN BAND AND ALEXIS GOMEZ AT JD LEGENDS - 8/15/15

Country music gentleman Clint Black hasn't been "Killin' Time" as of late, he's been busy mentoring the Chideo Songwriting Contest winners, recording new music and picking up a new touring schedule. Tonight's stop was JD Legends in Franklin, OH and the place was packed shoulder to shoulder as they arrived early for refreshing beverages, food, and the opening entertainment. Kicking off the night's show was a local country band from West Alexandria, OH called The Justin Bryan Band. The Justin Bryan Band is made up of  Justin Bryan on lead vocals, Ryan Wolfe on vocals and guitar, Chad Schrock on vocals and guitar, Travis Nichols on Bass and Dustin Crank on drums. The band would get the crowd energized during their opening set playing many of today's top country hits with a Justin Bryan Band original or two. You may check out the Justin Bryan Band on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/justinbryanband/timeline.

After the opening band got the crowd warmed up and rowdy, it was time for Dayton, OH native Alexis Gomez to take the stage. Alexis is known from American Idol's season 14 as a top 16 finalist only to be eliminated during Motown week where she performed "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)". Alexis put on a fun performance filled with covers and originals of her own that kept the crowd entertained and cheering. Alexis was backed by a talented group of musicians including:  Sol Gomez on Back-up Vocals, Michael Gomez on Bass Guitar, Morgan Gomez on Back-up Vocals, Jake Ittel on Electric Guitar, Dave D'Aurora on Drums, and Tom Lees on Electric Guitar. Alexis put her own spin on country favorites such as Little Big Town's 'Pontoon', Darius Rucker's 'Wagon Wheel', Martina McBride's 'Independence Day' and many others as well as an original titled 'Country Lovin'. Alexis is performing at various events throughout the Dayton, OH area so please check out her official website for more details at www.alexisgomezmusic.com.

Now that the opening bands had the crowd ready to go, it was Clint Black's duty to seal the deal on the night. The house lights dimmed and a quiet excitement took over the room as Clint's band took to the stage. The crowd packed in tightly as the fans inched closer to the stage for a better view of this country legend. Mr. Black come onstage with a charming smile on his face, harmonica around his neck and a red white and blue American flag guitar displaying his patriotic side. The sound was fantastic as he played through the biggest of his hits of his discography which spans a career of 25+ years. The fans were loud as they stood with their toes buried in the sand, turtle necking over anybody in front of them just to get a better glimpse. Looking out from the VIP deck/club level, it was a sea of people from the left to the right and from the front of the stage to the rear of the venue. This place was packed! Country radio, take a more than obvious hint, people still like traditional country music and tonight more than proved that point.

One of my personal favorite moments during the show was when Clint introduced a song from his D'lectrified album called 'Are You Sure Waylon Done It This Way' which is a spin off of Waylon's 'Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way'. Clint told the crowd of meeting with Waylon about the song and sitting in the same room was Kris Kristofferson, talk about being in good company! There was never a dull moment. Just one of those many exciting moments was when Clint laid his guitar down during "Been There' and got the crowd involved in a harmonica sing along. Yes! A harmonica sing along! At the end of the song, Clint broke things down with an energetic harmonica solo encouraging the crowd to sing back the harmonica part during the breaks. Clint says to the crowd "You have to sing Harmonica!"  Following the sing along, Clint began a bluesy harmonica intro to 'Put Yourself In My Shoes" and then finished up with some amazing guitar picking during 'Nothin' But The Taillights." The crowd was relentless with their cheering and applause that Clint had no choice other than to return to the stage for an encore which featured 'We Tell Ourselves' and then left crowd in a frenzy with 'All Tuckered Out'.

Clint doesn't need a lot of theatrics in his show to prove he certainly has a stage presence like no other. The precision of the notes and licks played on his guitar combined with his skill on the harmonica and one of the most recognizable voices in country music is more than enough to keep an audience captivated for many hours. Dayton and Cincinnati are sure glad that Clint Black took the time to come and play for them.  For more information on tour dates, music and merchandise please visit www.clintblack.com.

CONCERT REVIEW: PARMALEE - DEEP SOUTH 20TH ANNIVERSARY STREET FESTIVAL - RALEIGH, NC 5/16/15

It's such a great thing to see how far these four guys from such a small rural town as Parmele, NC have come in such a short time ... well, in country music anyway! They sure haven't been in music a short time, they've been knocking out the songs for about 10 years now and it all started in a small white barn dubbed "Studio B"in a town no bigger than it looks on a map. Well, that town may be small, but everyone knows where it is now thanks to this band.
Noticed by Deep South Entertainment's Dave Rose about 10 years ago, Parmalee was performing as a rock band in tiny clubs and bars around North Carolina. They were playing to whoever would listen, wherever they would listen. They eventually built a dedicated and rather large local following and established themselves as a credible act on the local live music scene. Their music footprint continued to grow until a robbery in 2010 nearly stopped them in their tracks permanently. One night in late September 2010, following a performance at "The Money" in Rock Hill, SC, two armed men,  Demario Burris, 22, and Dytavis Hinton, 22, attempted to rob the band on their bus. Both sides exchanged gunfire and drummer, Scott Thomas, was hit in the leg, shoulder and stomach. Burris was killed and Hinton was wounded. In critical condition, Scott was nearly killed and was hospitalized for over a month, with 10 of those days spent in a coma.  By a pure miracle, Scott recovered from the near fatal shooting and was back behind the drums in 2011 and they were determined to pick up right where they'd left off. Shortly after the incident, the local rock scene was starting to go stale and not going anywhere and country music was starting a new trend, mixing genres and incorporating more diverse sounds and welcoming a variety of styles. Parmalee's sound has never been one that truly fit one specific genre and the timing was perfect for them to see how they would fare on the country scene so they changed up their appearance and with Dave Rose's recommendation, headed for Nashville. The timing couldn't have been any better, their debut single "Must Have Had a Good Time" took off on Sirius XM's "The Highway" and now 4 singles later, including a #1 hit with "Carolina", Parmalee is a proven success and a band that has established a stellar reputation in the industry as just 4 humble hometown guys who just want to play their music and connect with their fans. That reputation couldn't be more true of Matt, Scott, Barry and Josh. They are 4 of the nicest, most grounded and most gracious artists I've ever had the pleasure of connecting with. They've always taken time to sit down with me for a catch up interview every time they're in town. They have never hesistated or declined a request and when the interview is going on, it's like talking to friends. They're all about family and home and no matter where the road takes them, it will always lead back to both and this weekend proved that with the road leading back to Raleigh, NC and most of the Parmalee family members in attendance, so many that a tent was set up to accommodate them.

Parmalee was the headliner for Deep South's 20th Anniversary in Raleigh, NC on Saturday, 5/16/15 and it was amazing to see the turnout for their homecoming. An enormous crowd descended on the corner of Dawson St and Cabarrus St for an entire day of music and a celebration of the contributions of Deep South Entertainment. 20 bands, 2 stages, noon to last call. When 9pm rolled around, you could not move. We staked our places against the stage barriers and anxiously awaited Parmalee's set to begin. When the band took the stage, the applause was deafening. Having last heard them perform back in 2013, I was quite excited to see how they sounded now as opposed to the last show I attended and I can honestly say that they are at the top of their game, both stage show, vocals and instrumentation are the best I've ever seen and heard from them. They performed all of the hits like "Must Have Had a Good Time", "Day Drinking", "Already Callin' You Mine", "Dance", and they even included covers of Bob Seger's "Night Moves" and a spoof of Miley Cyrus' hit "Wrecking Ball" called "Fireball". One highlight for me was a little girl who was standing next to me in the front row, maybe 8 years old if that, wearing her Parmalee concert tshirt and smiling from ear to ear, screaming louder than any groupie and singing every word to every song. Turns out this was her first concert and the guys had been awesome to her - taking her back by the bus for a personal meet and greet with a picture and then after one song, Scott came down from the drums and handed her his drum sticks. It was such a sweet thing to see the interaction with this little girl. They left her with a memory she'll never forget. Close to the end of the show, a Raleigh city official came out on stage with Dave Rose and stopped the guys before they could close out the show. They were completely stunned and didn't know what was going on. The lady, I missed her name unfortunately, starting praising the attention that Parmalee has brought to our state and the wonderful manner in which they represent this area in their actions and in their music. She declared Saturday, 5/16, as "Parmalee Day" and presented them with a certificate. This was very fitting for the ending of the show which was closed with "Carolina".

I know the word "amazing" tends to be overused in today's language but I can honestly say that I'm not overusing it in this review. This show was just that, nothing more and nothing less than fantastic, awesome, kick ass, killer, smack daddy, bombdiggity, great, and hell yes amazing. Thank you to Dave Rose for introducing the world to this band and for giving them a platform to showcase their talent and thank you to Parmalee for just being four of the coolest guys that happen to play music for a living.

Craig Campbell is the real deal when it comes to country music and is as genuine as they come. Craig played a show in Columbus, OH at The Bluestone on Thursday night 4/16/15.

Before we get to Craig's headlining performance, a couple other country newcomers would grace The Bluestone stage with their own performances. Sandra Lynn would be the first act of the evening. Sandra is new to me as I had only briefly heard a couple of her songs prior to her performance. I was impressed by Sandra's stage presence as she owned the stage making her way from one end of it to the other waving at the fans and interacting with them as she would flash a beautiful smile while performing her songs. Sandra would perform her last single "Afterparty" and also performed a cover of Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About".  Lynn would close out her set with her newest single "Bar Hoppin'" and then invite the fans to stop by and say hi at the merchandise table.

Next up would be Dean Alexander. Dean has most recently been sharing the stage while on the road with Eric Paslay touring the bar/club scene. Dean brought a lot of energy and attitude to the stage with the speakers and amps turned up loud. He kicked off his set with "Let the Bad Times Roll". Dean's performances were just what the night needed to get the fans pumped up and ready for a party. Some of the songs that Dean included in his set this evening were "Let It Go", "Keep Your Crazy" and "Sunshine in My Rain". Dean would close out his set with "Life Ain't Fair" and "Live A Little". Although Dean mentioned that they were having technical difficulties onstage, that did not stop him from bringing a great performance to the fans and certainly gave it his all.

As the crew was clearing the stage and setting up for the headliner of the evening, Craig Campbell, the fans were lining up out at the merchandise tables to say Hi, get a picture with or an autograph from Sandra Lynn and Dean Alexander. After the stage setup was finished and the crowd packed in tighter on the floor in front of the stage, it was now time for Craig Campbell. The stage was set up with a piano made to look like a bar and the initials CC lighted up on the front with a Craig Campbell banner hanging above the stage.

Yelling and cheering came from the crowd as the band began to take the stage and broke into a cover of Brooks and Dunn's "Play Something Country" as Craig appeared onstage providing the vocals. Craig would follow up with "Shindig", "My Little Cowboy" and "Outta My Head". I am a big fan of Craig's because I've always loved the traditional country sound and Craig provides that. Craig would perform a fun song titled "Truck N Roll" from his latest CD "Never Regret" and has incorporated a type of dance move in which he has titled "The Dolphin". Gotta check out a Craig Campbell concert to see "The Dolphin". One of my personal favorites is a song called "Family Man" and being a father of two boys myself, it hits home for me.

Now, did I say Craig Campbell is Country? Here is how "country" Craig Campbell is. At one point in the show, the band provided two bar stools at Craig's bar/piano and invited two fans up onstage. Sitting on top of the bar was a mason jar of "Smoky Mountain Moonshine" in which he will share with two special guests from the crowd while playing a song at his piano. As the two fan sat at the bar and Craig at the piano, he would proceed to inform the crowd that he used to play piano for Tracy Byrd and for Luke Bryan and that this was the first song that he had ever learned on the piano. Craig would begin to play Garth Brooks' "The Dance" on the keys and the crowd would get as loud as it had been all night. After the song had finished Craig would begin to play and sing the first few lines of "Let it Go" from "Frozen" and then stopped and said I'm kidding, I'm not playing that one and stood up from the piano. Craig would then say you can't drink moonshine without playing a Merle Haggard tune! He would begin playing "I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink" while passing the mason jar around to the fans standing in front of him.

Craig Campbell has had two CD releases. One self titled CD and the most recent one titled "Never Regret". Craig would perform two brand new songs during the show, one of which was called "Winnebago" and the other which will be his newest single to country radio called "Tomorrow, Tonight". Following these new songs the band would begin into an instrumental battle of sorts in which Craig would introduce the band members to the crowd as they would play solo performances of their specialty as an introduction to Craig's most recent hit "Keep Them Kisses Coming" and then would finish up with a song from his first album called "Fish" as he would also throw in a little teaser of "Fishin' in the Dark" encouraging audience participation.  Craig Campbell throws a party like no other and I would encourage you to check out a Craig Campbell concert and we are looking forward to the release of the new single, "Tomorrow, Tonight", as well as a new upcoming album!! Thanks for keeping it Country Craig!

An Oak Ridge Boys performance is quite literally a hug from the Lord. It's like He reached down from Heaven and wrapped His arms around the audience and squeezed really tight letting us know that there is still good in this world and it's in the form of these four men and their music, Joe Bonsall, Duane Allen, Richard Sterban and William Lee Golden.

I always make the time to attend an Oaks show at the Alabama Theatre in Myrtle Beach, SC. I never miss one even though it's a 3.5 hr drive from my house. If I'm scheduled to work, I take the day off. If I had surgery scheduled, my appendix can wait, and I think if it was my own funeral, I'd tell them to hold off the eulogy! You get the idea. They usually play here twice a year and I can honestly say those are my 2 favorite days of the year. That's just how much I love these shows. The venue and it's staff are wonderful, the acoustics are fantastic, and the crowd is always familiar. It is, as I said in my previous review for their last show here, like coming home.

I got there early as I usually do so I can spend some pre-show, no stress time with the guys and the band. This is my favorite part of the day, when they're not in show mode, they're just laid back and having some relaxing time with friends and family. There's always laughter and there's always love, those are two things that are never missing on stage or off. When I was walking from the parking lot and was passing the bus on the way to the backstage entrance, there was a small group of ladies waiting by the bus. When I approached, they told me they were hoping to see Joe because one of the ladies in the group had something she wanted to give him that she'd been holding onto for months in hopes of being able to hand it to him personally. I told her I would let him know. When I walked in and as soon as I saw Joe, I told him about the ladies and the gift and he immediately walked out to the bus to say hello but the ladies were gone. This is what I love about these guys, fans are ALWAYS important, even when they're not showered and looking stage ready, even right when they've pulled in and get off the bus from a 14 hour trip, during the show when they shake hands and even after the show when they're exhausted and ready to go home. They always make the time and are so gracious with everyone.

The show was once again a sellout. As soon as it began, before any of the hits began to play, Joe took the mic and asked if there was someone that had been waiting for him by the bus with a gift. He said he went out there but missed them and he wanted to be sure that this lady was taken care of. She happened to be in the front row in front of him and was so excited that he had taken the time to acknowledge her and she handed him her gift, an empty Coke bottle with his name on in. She had looked for one for so long that said "Joe" and she finally found it and she was able to share it with him. This made her day and it made Joe's as well. What a great thing to do.

When it comes to the music, there really is not a better show I've been to than an Oaks performance. I know I gush when it comes to them, but they give me every valid reason to do so and in these days of country music, there really honestly aren't many I can say that give me the same level of excitement and warmth than these guys. The music is always timeless, the performances are audience interactive and so much fun, Their harmonies are still some of the best in the business even after 40 years of singing. The band is fantastic and always smiling and having such a great time. Rex Wiseman, Scotty Simpson, Jeffrey Douglas, David Northrup, Ronnie Fairchild and Roger Eaton stand behind the Oaks night after night, show after show, after after hour and never once do they ever give the impression that they don't want to be there. They're always smiling and laughing. They interact with the audience and the Oaks just as much as the fans do and there's always something going on up on that stage that has an electricity to it. It's just the perfect combination of personalities and talent. When they take the stage, you can see that they're doing it for the love of the music they sing and those they sing for. They've made their millions, they've played for Presidents, they've won every award possible and achieved the pinnacle every country artist dreams of - memberships in the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry. They've seen and done it all, now they're doing it all because they enjoy it and because they love to see the enjoyment on the faces of their fans. This show was a product of love, friendship, and the personal inner harmony that comes from connecting with people. This is why we keep coming back and why the Oak Ridge Boys will always be legends not only in country music, but in the hearts of so many. I am ready for September, bring it on boys!
