JASON MICHAEL CARROLL SETS SIGHTS ON NEW ALBUM ‘WHAT COLOR IS YOUR SKY’ DUE TUESDAY, MAY 5

NEW SINGLE “GOD ONLY KNOWS” PREMIERES WITH COUNTRY WEEKLY
TODAY (3/17)

PRESS RELEASE

“The theme I hope people take away from this record is Real Life.  Yeah, I want people to move with the party and drinking songs, but I want people to feel the heartbreak too. I want them to feel the urgency in ‘Urgency’ and the sense of standing on the edge of losing everything if something doesn't change in ‘Civil War.’  Real life.”

--JASON MICHAEL CARROLL (read full Q&A with JASON MICHAEL CARROLL below).

Country music singer, songwriter, guitarist and hitmaker JASON MICHAEL CARROLL is setting his sights on the Tuesday, May 5 release of WHAT COLOR IS YOUR SKY, his fourth full-length album and first since 2011. JASON MICHAEL CARROLL - Q&A
WHAT COLOR IS YOUR SKY

The new album is uniquely titled WHAT COLOR IS YOUR SKY. Where did that come from and what does it mean to you?

“The title ‘What Color Is Your Sky’ came to me after a hunting trip.  I have always enjoyed social media.  Sharing my thoughts and my life with my fans brings us all closer together.  I came home from a hunting trip and decided to post about my day.  I took a shot that day. I missed, but I took a shot.  There were a lot of factors as to why I missed and I'm not going to get into all of them but it was cold, raining, I was shivering, couldn't hold my gun still, I think the scope was off because I fell out of the tree stand, I'm pretty sure my ammo was wet...whatever the reason, I missed.  I posted about my trip and a lady decided to start in on me about how I ‘shouldn't shoot God’s creatures because they deserve to live as much as I do.’ I tried to calm her down by saying ‘yes ma'am, you're exactly right! If God would've wanted that animal dead, he would've let my bullet hit it!’  That didn't help at all !  After actually trying to calm her down and realizing she only wanted to argue, I typed ‘you're gonna argue no matter what I say so, the sky is blue...go!’  My smart-ass fans jumped in with both feet! I call them that because we all are the same! They get my humor and I am a bit of smart-ass myself! They started posting ‘my sky is green’ or ‘my sky is red.’  Someone posted ‘my sky is purple with a golden hue.’

I typed the words ‘What Color Is Your Sky’ and before I hit post I looked at it and thought, ‘that's a song title.’  I deleted it and stared working on the song.

My next trip to Nashville, I took the idea to my writing team Pete and AJ and later that afternoon we had the song!  We all knew we had something special after we finished it! That's a good feeling. I love when things come together like that out of a totally organic situation.

I thought of several titles for this record.  One was ‘Nondenominational’ simply because I felt my music obviously has been received by my fans and all of the new fans we make at every show even if I'm not in the ‘Nashville’ clique.  I felt it might be too vague and not clearly understood.  Another thought was another song title off of this record, ‘Civil War.’ Again, this felt like a great title but still not capturing the essence of the album.  After weighing several options for album titles, I felt this one [What Color Is Your Sky] evoked a more positive thought and message.  That's something I am trying to surround myself with more, personally and professionally.”

The album’s first single, “God Only Knows” has an affecting lyrical usage of the title phrase and is connecting with your fans and folks at radio--what can you tell us about the writing of the song?

“I love the way songs make people feel things and the way you want to move.  When I was a kid, I remember the song ‘Holding Out For A Hero’ by Bonnie Tyler!  I grew up in a very strict Christian household but I remember before my parents made the switch--cold turkey--to nothing but Gospel, I was well on my way to appreciating 80's Rock like the Cutting Crew ‘I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight,’ any song by Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Poison, and 80's Country from George Strait, Mel McDaniel and Barbara Mandrell.  It was culture shock.  Now don't get me wrong, I appreciate Gospel music but I had the Rock in my blood.  I was bitten and it didn't sting.  I'm chasing rabbits. I remember I wanted to write a song that made people feel, that made people want to move even if it was their first time hearing it!  I went to my writing team (Pete and AJ) and told them about my idea.  I think AJ started the progression for the song and we started writing lyrics.  I'm pretty proud of the outcome.”

This is your first album as a label-free artist and your strong fan support helped you achieve the ability to release this record on your own terms. What are some benefits or challenges you’ve encountered during this new process?

“Benefits? Those are easy to list!  I have fans that support what I do.  They come to shows, they buy several copies of CDs they already have and they bring new friends to shows.  I get to make the music I want to make without the influence of corporate parties or which label is in bed with, or close to, which publisher.  My band--who I trust enough to perform with me night after night--is who I picked as my band for this record! It all makes sense.

Challenges?  The challenges are not having the finances to push our music with the resources that major labels have to push their artists.  Music that is shaping today's accepted norm.  There is no doubt in my mind or my fan’s minds that this record, my music, can stand with all of the music being pushed by major labels but without their bank, we have to work harder.  I'm ok with that.”

What do you want people to take away from this album after listening to it, especially if this is a listener’s first time hearing your music?

“This record [What Color Is Your Sky] is who I am!  It's the songs I felt and wrote by myself or with friends. It’s recorded by my band, people I live, travel and hang with, and it's the way I wanted it to sound.  I hope it connects in a way that makes them feel like they can't wait for the next one!”

If there was one theme tying this collection of songs together, what might it be?

“The theme I hope people take away from this record is Real Life.  Yeah, I want people to move with the party and drinking songs,  but I want people to feel the heartbreak too. I want them to feel the urgency in ‘Urgency’ and the sense of standing on the edge of losing everything if something doesn't change in ‘Civil War.’ Real life.”

You have a wide vocal range and unique way of phrasing which has been showcased throughout your career and is ever-evident on WHAT COLOR IS YOUR SKY. Are there any particular vocalists that influenced you? If so, who and how?  Or was your voice more of a natural discovery?

“When I was a kid, I used to sit in the back of the car while the radio was on and try to sound like the people I heard singing.  I wasn't even trying to sing like the people I heard, I was trying to sound like them.  The singing I guess was something I learned while trying to emulate.  I have always said one of my biggest influences is Steven Tyler.  His stage presence and vocal ability, in my opinion, is unmatched.  I love Vince Gill’s voice and how flawless it is after all of these years.  I have been told several times over the years--and I take it as a huge compliment--that I sound ‘as good if not better’ than my CD's.  I can't even begin to tell you how good it feels when people notice the hard work I put into that especially when I'm working just as hard on the entertaining aspect of our shows.”

JASON MICHAEL CARROLL IS DOING IT RIGHT - DON'T LIMIT YOUR PERFORMANCE SETTINGS.

SAT OCTOBER 11, 2014 - 12:00 PM
Masonic Home for Children
600 College St
Oxford, NC

Jason Michael Carroll is a great example of what every new artist should be doing - not limiting themselves to performing in bars and bigger venues. Potential fans come in all ages and all walks of life and may physically not be able to come to your show, sometimes you need to go to them. Perform at children's homes, hospitals, schools, retirement homes and places like that. Don't always put the big money shows first, put the fact that people want to hear your music and get to know your music first. I absolutely love that he does this and wish more artists would do this for their communities. It not only helps you as an artist, it gives a great impression for your community and it lifts the spirits of those who may need it.

EXCLUSIVE ARTIST INTERVIEW: TEN MINUTES WITH JASON MICHAEL CARROLL

We attended Jason Michael Carroll's Birthday Bash at The Farm in Selma, NC back on 6/14 and he was gracious enough to give us some time before the show to just sit down and catch up and talk about what's been going on with him and of course to laugh. He's always such a nice guy, very approachable and is very generous with the free time he has and we appreciate him for that. We talked about his Honky Tonk Friends fan base, his latest music projects, CMA Fest, his overseas tour and just honestly, a little of everything. We love this guy, everything about him and once you get to know him, you'll love him too.

He has a new single and cd/dvd release coming out in the next few months, so get ready to start hitting up your radio stations. We'll raise the flag when the race is on!

Hey y'all in NC, "Close Enough" by Jason Michael Carroll, "Shake It Off" by Ash Bowers, "Slip on By" by Austin Webb and other great new music is on the WQDR Listener Advisory Board waiting on your feedback. Go sign up and take the new music survey. Be sure to rate the song as "LOVE IT", those are the ones that have the best chance of being added. DON'T SETTLE FOR A SPARK, START A FIRE: NEW JASON MICHAEL CARROLL SINGLE GOES OUT TO COUNTRY RADIO AUGUST 13

Two weeks from Tuesday, on August 13th, the brand new single from Jason Michael Carroll, "Close Enough", is officially going out to country radio. Let's pull together as supporters and friends of Jason, who is an amazing artist, person and make sure he gets the attention he deserves with this new song. This song has hit potential with the right push. When you start requesting it on your local stations starting August 13, a few things to keep in mind in order to make this a successful campaign:

1.) BE PATIENT - not all stations will have it at the same time and not all stations will add it immediately.

2.) BE KIND - When requesting, if you're told no or "we don't have it", please don't take out frustrations on the dj. They are told what they can and can't play and if a new song is being requested, they haven't been given the thumbs up yet from management or they don't have the song yet. Thank them and move on.

3.) DO NOT contact program directors unless you know them personally or have been given permission from Jason or his management. Program directors and general managers should ONLY be contacted by the artist or an official representative of that artist. They only set aside a few hours a day to discuss new music with official representives (A&R people, promotions, management, etc). If they are on the phone with a fan, this ties up their time that they could be using to speak with the people they should be talking to.) Once you get on a PD or GM's bad side, that can definitely affect the outcome of what we're trying to do.

4.) Only use designated listener and request avenues such as posted request phone lines, email addresses, Twitter or Facebook pages, etc. These are there for YOU, the listener, to make your voice heard. Use them, but don't OVERUSE them. You don't want to make the station tired of the song before they even get it. Request the song regularly, but don't oversaturate the station with requests, especially by the same people over and over. They do catch on and trust me, they will let you know if you're overdoing it. That has the opposite effect of what we're trying to achieve.

5.) If a station does play it, either from your request, or you happen to hear it being played, SAY THANK YOU and TAKE NOTE OF THE STATION so we can let management know and they can thank them and fans can also let them know they appreciate it by promoting that station on social media. Always be sure to give back.

6.) And most of all, TALK ABOUT IT. Promote it on your social media pages, tweet about it, Facebook about it, Google Plus about it, Linked In about it, Myspace about it. If you have a blog, blog about it. Don't be afraid to tell people why you love the song and why you think Jason is a great artist who deserves the attention. Remember, not everyone is going to love the song and that's fine. We're all entitled to our opinions. Always show respect to other fans, even when you disagree. Remember, in a way, you are representing Jason in an "unofficial" manner and the way you deal with other fans reflects on him. Honky Tonk Friends are known for their dedication, kindness, respect and strength in numbers. So speak up, stand up and make a difference!

That being said, let's not just settle for a spark with this single, you've waited long enough and should be ready to start a fire. Let's show what the power of people who stand behind and believe in an artist can do. Your voice does make a difference.

Below are a couple of tools to help you with your promotion campaign:

Radio Locator : Here is the contact information for country stations in your area

Online Mediabase Request Forms: These are request forms for FAN use. Don't be afraid to use them. Find your closest reporting station and look on the form to see if "Close Enough" is listed as a song choice. If so, simply mark it and submit the form according to the station's directions. If the song is NOT listed, there should be a space near the bottom of the form to manually fill in the song title and artist name. These are usually checked once or twice a day. Please don't OVERUSE these forms either. One or two submissions a week is plenty!

DEEP SOUTH ENTERTAIMENT LAUNCHES TENNESSEE EAST MANAGEMENT AND SIGNS JASON MICHAEL CARROLL

I've been waiting so long to be able to announce this. Jason is in the best of hands with Dave Rose and Kevin Frazier. I've worked with Dave a few times in the past with various bands and Kevin is the owner of City Limits Saloon in Raleigh, NC who I currently work very closely with in promotions for their shows. I am ecstatic about this team, it's a great combination and look forward to helping them.

North Carolina-based Deep South Entertainment has launched Tennessee East Artist Management and signed Jason Michael Carroll to its roster. The new company is co-owned by Deep South President Dave Rose and NC venue owner Kevin Frazier; Frazier will lead the new company. Its first order of business is the radio release of Carroll's single "Close Enough" this spring, followed by a tour and live DVD later this year. More here.
