As the sun was setting on the North Carolina coast on Sunday, July 30, the stage lights began to rise and one of the best nights of music I've experienced in a long time was about to begin.

The crowd was ready for a night of musical memories, good times on the beach with friends and making new connections. The buzz in the security line was full of stories about growing up with "Hootie", sunshine and sunburns, friends who were reconnecting from college, family reunions and how this night was going to be one for the memory books. They weren't kidding.

The show was held at a relatively new wedding and event venue, "The Cottage at The Crystal Coast". The great thing about this venue is how intimate and absolutely beautiful it is and that sits right on the the beauty of Atlantic Beach, NC. It's a 3 story beach house that can hold up to 225 guests inside the house itself, with open air decks that can comfortably accommodate small bands or wedding parties, a bar, various rooms for gatherings, a walkway to the sand and water and a fenced in 5,793 square foot luxury ocean front lawn with a stage set up for a full band that can accommodate even more guests.  This is truly a unique venue and one of the best I've ever been to. The staff was great too! Even better, it's less than a 10 minute drive from my house. Oh! I have to give hardcore kudos and accolades to the tour bus drivers on their perfect navigation of our tiny, narrow and difficult beach neighborhood streets and being able to park those behemoths beautifully. Hats off to y'all and high fives all around!

Now, let's talk about this show. Holy Pirate Ship! (Ha, Eastern NC is ECU Pirate Nation, the home of Blackbeard and the wreck of his ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge is 12 miles off the coast so ya see what I did there instead of cursing and making it accomodating? LOL) So, ahoy mateys, this show was UH-MAZING and when it comes to the state of music these days, I don't use that description as much as I used to.

Let's start with the crazy good vocals of Maggie Rose. You might remember her as Margaret Durante from several years back, but the key words here are "You" and "Remember" because her voice is definitely one you do not forget. This girl can hit notes you never knew existed and she can carry a note for days without wavering. I can say with no hesitation that she has one of the absolute best female voices in music and, as a side note, dear radio, you suck for not giving her the airplay she should have. She took the stage with her band (Kyle Lewis - guitar / Judd Fuller - Bass / Timothy Burkhead - Drums / Kaitlyn Connor - Keys) and slayed it right out of the gate when she launched into "Dead Weight". I took a minute to look around and every eye was on her and you could her whispers of "Dang she's good", "How have I not heard of this girl?" and similar things. Needless to say, she done good. LOL!
The rest of her set was outstanding and I actually hated to hear her sing the last note. I hate I didn't get to finally meet her in person after talking about her to y'all for so many years but I did get to hug on her awesome tour manager, Max, who is a longtime friend from Raleigh that left and went to hit the road with her. Seriously, if you are looking for some really good new music to add to your playlists (and I'm not just talking to the streaming users, I'm talking to you radio), add her music and keep an ear out for more new stuff on the way.

Now ... the man, the myth (not really because he definitely exists), the legend - HOOOOOTIE! I mean Darius Ruckkkkkker! I can't even tell you how excited I was for this. Darius has long been a bucket list check mark for me. I grew up in the era of the Blowfish and have been a longtime fan of every single solo album he's put out. I have a "It's Darius, Y'all" playlist with every song possible on there. No, really. There is just something about him that pulls you in. I think it's the dance moves, the smooth moves of the feet and the smile that did not leave his face this entire show. Oh, he sings pretty good too.

The music started and Darius came up the stairs from side stage and walked into a chorus of appreciative applause and screams, a few drunken "hell yeahs" and quite a few cat calls from the ladies. You knew this was just gonna be a good night. He started the night telling us that he was gonna play some real country and also take us back to the 90's. The crowd went nuts. What I truly appreciated about this night, from both artists, was the chance to put away social media, turn off the tv, silence the news and shut out the world outside the fence and keep politics quiet for a few hours. Darius and Maggie made the night about the music and the fans who love it, not about what's going on other than in that moment.

He kicked off the night with 3 songs that fit perfectly for this night, his brand new single, "Have a Good Time", which was released today (August 4) and is the first single from his upcoming album "Carolyn's Boy",  "Beers and Sunshine" and "All I Want".  I think he chose these songs to let us know that was the reason he was there, for us to just have a good time. Thank you for that, Darius. He didn't just do his own stuff, he threw in some unexpected surprises with his own renditions of  John Mellencamp's "Little Pink Houses", Tim McGraw's hit song "I Like It I Love It", TLC'S "Waterfalls" and Bell Biv Devoe's "Poison". Man, it was great to take a trip back to the days before social media and when we didn't worry about what was going on in the world. I will not apologize for my really bad, loud singing. Can we do more of that please? The tears flowed during the songs I knew were gonna make me cry -  "It Won't Be Like This For Long:, "If I Told You" and "Don't Think I Don't Think About It". He brought the Hootie out with the classics, "Let Her Cry", "Hold My Hand" and I Only Wanna Be With You". He mixed in some other great songs like "Alright", "Homegrown Honey" and a few others before wrapping up the best night ever with the one he couldn't get out of there without doing, "Wagon Wheel".  I have to give the highest of props to his band - probably one of the most entertaining and talented group of musicians out there - Quinton Gibson - guitar / Garry Murray - Every instrument ever made / Lee Turner - Keys, Acoustic Guitar / John Mason - Bass / Jeff Marino - Drums / "Sasha" Ostrovsky - Dobro, Steel guitar, Banjo, etc). Y'all were the best! That dance near the end, though - hysterical!

Darius and Maggie, seriously, THANK YOU for the best night. Thank you for not just standing up there and singing, but for truly engaging and connecting and for showing that you were having as good a time as we were. I know needed it and know those around me did as well. I had some great conversations before and after the show with some people who said this was getting them out of the negativity around them and giving them a night of peace and a reason to smile. You both are the best. I am so thankful I was able to be a part of this night. What a welcome relief from the stress of what has become the new "normal". Thank you to The Cottage for hosting this fantastic show. Can't wait to do it again.

Be sure to stream/download music from both artists, check out their websites and follow them on social media!

MAGGIE ROSE RELEASES CHANGE THE WHOLE THING DELUXE EDITION AND PREMIERES NEW VIDEO

“...her breakthrough album Change The Whole Thing...has had as significant a ripple effect as its title would suggest…”
- Paste

Powerhouse vocalist and songwriter Maggie Rose is releasing Change The Whole Thing Deluxe Edition today. The critically-acclaimed album features new bonus track “Can’t Miss Something,” revealed exclusively via Paste (HERE), calling it “...a retro rocker…” The 17-track Deluxe Edition also includes intimate acoustic versions of some of Rose’s most personal songs including “Change The Whole Thing,” “It’s You” along with a never-before-heard work tape from the day “Pull You Through” was written. Rolling Stone shared more in an exclusive interview with Rose about the Deluxe Edition and premiered the music video for bonus track “Can’t Miss Something.” The “Can’t Miss Something” music video will also debut across Ditty TV’s “The Curve” on Wed. (12/11) at 10 p.m. CT. Change The Whole Thing (Deluxe Edition) is available, here: https://maggierose.lnk.to/CTWTDeluxe.

“I’ve received such overwhelming support from listeners and fans since the release of this album, which made this past year so magical and transformative. So, with gratitude, I wanted to share some special acoustic versions of a few of the tracks that seemed to resonate the most. It feels satisfying to wrap the year on that note and share every last bit of this project that was so important to me,” said Rose.

Rose’s breakthrough album Change The Whole Thing was recorded entirely live in the studio and released to overwhelming critical-acclaim. Rose marked major milestones with first-time performances on NBC’s “Today Show,” Southwest’s Live at 35, a debut at AmericanaFest with a show-stopping performance as part of WMOT/NPR’s Wired In series, AOL Build, Paste Sessions and more. In addition to her head-turning live performances, critics applauded Rose’s independent rise, after nearly a decade at various labels, both independent and major, and her ability to transcend genres performing with a range of artists. This past year, she toured nationwide on her headlining Change The Whole Thing tour, and made first-time festival appearances aboard the Cayamo Cruise, Peach Music Festival, and opened select tour stops with rock icons Heart and Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, and pop superstar Kelly Clarkson.

Rose’s ability to embrace her creative freedom in the studio as an independent artist and capture the synergy of her live performances continued to open the floodgates. Critics raved about her live performances including Rolling Stone who named her in their list of 20 Must See Acts (out of 700), USA Today who named her in their list of “...performers who’ll go above and beyond, define a moment…,” and The Nashville Scene who called her performance, “...visually striking, full-sounding, and highly entertaining…” The Washington Post shared, “...louder, looser, more spontaneous...her voice, which has always threatened to incinerate the eyebrows of anyone sitting in the front row…” and Columbus Alive added that her voice “...could run circles around most of the singers on country and pop radio today…”

Change The Whole Thing (Deluxe Edition) comes just after the one-year anniversary celebration of Rose’s breakthrough album Change The Whole Thing. To mark the occasion, Rose released documentary film “Change The Whole Thing” about the making of the record, available here: https://maggierose.lnk.to/CTWTAnniversary

Rose is currently in the studio working on new music and is wrapping her headlining Change The Whole Thing tour this winter with shows in Birmingham, AL (12/6), Atlanta, GA (12/7), and a sold out show in Bethesda, MD (12/21).

TAKE A LISTEN: PUT THESE ARTISTS ON YOUR 2017 "PLAYDAR"

You may not be familiar with the name "Adam Craig", but you more than likely already know his style.  Arriving in Music City in 2004, he performed in various local hot spots in his bands Telluride and the Adam Craig Band and established a following. Adam was soon signed to a publishing deal and began writing music. His song, "Church Pew or Bar Stool" by Jason Aldean got him the recognition he needed to secure a deal with Sony/ATV Publishing. He later went on to co-wrote hits like "Close Your Eyes" by Parmalee, "Wastin' Gas" by Dallas Smith, and "Whiskey on My Breath" by Love and Theft to name a few. He signed a record deal with Stoney Creek Records in 2014, released his debut single "Reckon" in 2016 along with his debut EP. With his fresh sound, he's attracted quite a fan base and his popularity continues to grow.

His "every man" style, hints of gritty soul and bluegrass inflections puts Brent in a class all his own, one that no other artist compares to. His style is "Mellencamp riding down a dusty rural America back road with the windows down." Cobb has written songs for artists such as his good friend, Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Kellie Pickler, Little Big Town and more. He released an EP in 2012, was featured on the 2016 "Southern Family" compilation and released his debut CD, "Shine on Rainy Day" this year as well. Brent Cobb takes pride in his music and it shines in his latest CD.

Have you ever heard of the Boomerang Theory? When you give your best to the world, the world returns the favor? Cash Creek gives their best with every note and every performance. Now with 2 new singles released simultaneously to country radio and Christian radio, "She Got Me" and "One Wave at a Time", the world is starting to give back to them via recognition and a growing allegiance of fans. "One Wave at a Time" is currently sitting at #1 for the second week in a row at Christian Music Weekly and "She Got Me" hit #1 on the Smokin' FM Top 20 Indie Chart. The band consists of 4 of the industry's best musicians who not only make up Cash Creek, but have been or currently are band members for Alabama, John Michael Montgomery and Brad Paisley. When you go see a performance by these guys, the world will pay you back in a good way with great music and a positive message. When you can tell that a band loves what they do and you can see the friendship on stage and off, that's how you know you're watching quality.

When it comes to country music, Texas artist Cody Jinks didn't wait for someone else to raise the bar, he raised it himself.  He knew he had a special gift and he knew he had to use it to the best of his ability and his latest CD, "I'm Not the Devil" is proof of that, debuting at No. 4 on the Top Country Albums chart. Cody Jinks is a heart that beats pure country. After his metal band broke up, Cody listened to his heart and decided country was where his voice belonged and we're sure glad he listened. His music resonates on a personal level and his subject matter can be a little dark, but dark is a good thing when it hits you when you need it to and his honesty is something we can sure appreciate.

I feel good adding Drake's name to this list, no pun intended ... well, ok maybe a little pun. Ok, I totally meant it. H. Jackson Brown, Jr. once said "Let your performance do the talking" and Drake White's performances speak volumes and each one is something unique and different. Drake is such a welcome change in musical direction. He is anything but boring or predictable. His music will have you up on your feet stomping and moving just as hard as he does. The energy he puts out is incredible. If you've never seen Drake perform, be ready to get your weekly dose of cardio in just one show. Drake White is more than a "Spark", he's a damn inferno. Big things coming from this guy, BIG THINGS.

This NC native has literally blown in like a "Hurricane" over the past year. His debut single "Hurricane" has made a huge impression on fans and country radio (thanks to Sirius XM's The Highway for getting it all started). His shows continue to draw large capacity crowds and his music is selling like crazy. There's nothing more attractive than humility and gratitude and Luke Combs has nailed both of these traits. He doesn't take the stage with anything other than heart and talent .. and maybe the occasional drink .. Ha! He leaves all of that heart on that stage when he walks off, knowing he gave it his all. He's one of my favorite artists of the year and I know without an ounce of doubt, he'll be one of mine for a long time to come.

Maggie Rose is the picture of the 3 P's: Passion, Patience, and Perseverance. She's really made a name for herself as a strong independent female artist. She had a setback a couple of years ago when she released "The Girl in Your Truck Song" which didn't exactly go over very well with radio or it's listeners but she stands unapologetic. She has been behind the scenes lately doing some writing and producing. The time off has paid off with her latest release, "The Variety Show Vol I.". What a great EP! It truly embraces who she is, shows a more personal side of herself and showcases her bad ass vocals. Her song "Love Me More" is striking chords and giving her the platform to really stand out in a sea of female artists. This is her year and she knows it. We've missed you Maggie Rose. Welcome back!

If you're looking for tradition in your country, stop right here. There's no need to go any farther. Country is in the blood and bones of Mo Pitney. Instead of rolling in their graves, George Jones and Merle Haggard are high fiving each other and smilling every time a Mo Pitney song is heard. With well received singles "Country" and "Boy and a Girl Thing" already on the books, Mo's just released his follow up single, "Everywhere" and it's already collecting great reviews. Mo is the real country deal, heart and soul.  I think Garth Brooks summed it up best by saying "True country music is honesty, sincerity, and real life to the hilt." This is exactly what you get when you get Mo Pitney.

If there was ever an artist more welcome to country music, it's Ned LeDoux, son of everyone's favorite cowboy, Chris LeDoux. Ned may look and sound like his dad, but Ned is his own artist just trying to keep the true western music legacy alive and well. Having grown up under Chris' infuence and playing in Chris' band, Western Underground, Ned knows better than anyone just how to do it.  Keep an ear out for Ned, you'll be hearing a lot from this guy.

SINGLE REVIEW: "GIRL IN YOUR TRUCK" - MAGGIE ROSE

SINGLE: "Girl in Your Truck"

Purchase on iTunes and Amazon

Maggie Rose has released one of the sweetest songs I’ve heard to date, and her voice is just as sweet as the lyrics are. Her voice washes over you like nectar, natural, pure and sweet. It’s not sticky saccharine or bubbly fairytale, there’s no flashy show here. "Girl in Your Truck" is just Maggie Rose singing about wanting to be the girl in all the country songs you hear on the radio. She’s not the least bit miffed or sarcastic about it, but more like all of this is exactly what she wants. She wants Jason Aldean’sTattoos on This Town,” she wants to get a litte bit of “Mud On The Tires”, she considers she and Luke’s “Kinda Night” as one and the same… The list goes on and on as she cleverly infuses lyrics from “Cruise” and “Chillin’ It” and “Boys ‘Round Here.”

To Maggie Rose and the song’s writers, Caitlyn Smith, Gordie Sampson and Troy Verges

Thank you for adding such a positive, powerful female voice to a subject that is so physically womanless. Written for so many men and women, it is nice to see both female singers and songwriters working their way into a mostly male-dominated genre. You’ve made me fall in love with these songs all over again, with these memories, these ideas, these stories, as well as with you. You’ve given a breath of new life to that which people have made a habit (and perhaps even started a career) out of disdain and shown the original intent of what these songs were meant to showcase, and what they mean to you.

If this is what happens when women enter “Bro Country” and the gender collaboration of songwriters end up with more songs like this and we get to hear more voices like Maggie’s, I welcome it. Not only do I welcome it, I applaud it and believe that country music will flourish as a result of it.
