SINGLE REVIEW: "THAT OLD FLAME" - DON HENLEY FEATURING MARTINA MCBRIDE

SINGLE: "That Old Flame"
ARTIST: Don Henley featuring Martina McBride
REVIEWER: Alyse Smith
Follow Alyse on Twitter at @ASmith1300

Purchase "That Old Flame" on iTunes

Don Henley released a new single featuring a collaboration with none other than Martina McBride.

Don Henley is of course, most famous for being one of the founding members of the Eagles and then a remarkable solo career following that. Don Henley is also this year’s recipient of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award, to be presented at the Americana Music and Honors Awards Ceremony at the Ryman on September 16th. Henley’s new single “That Old Flame” is off of his new album “Cass County,” which is first solo album in a decade and a half. Henley has also announced the album release tour to be kicking off at the start of October with Shawn Colvin as the opener. The sound is classic Don Henley, equally at home on a solo album or an Eagles album, it stands out brilliantly. Martina Mcbride’s vocals create more of a current sound and the combination of theirs in a single song create an unequivocally unique sound. A rather upbeat track for a downtrodden song, it creates such curiosity within the story and sound both. Is there a “Strawberry Wine”/”Innocence” thing happening here or “is it me you really miss?” There’s a cautiousness happening here because as they put in the chorus:

“Cause there is danger in the embers
And you have only yourself to blame
If you get burned when you try to rekindle
That old flame”

But there’s also traces of hope, peace and growth blended in. Ultimately, I would say that it ends with equal parts caution, curiosity and hope. I wonder what the story behind this was and how it turns out for the people involved. I wonder if Henley will have furthering of this storyline on his new album or shed some light on it on his new tour. I’m intrigued to see how what else he presents and can’t wait to see him in this new phase of his career and at a show soon! The much queried after dates would be the album release date of September 25th, tour tickets on sale August 7th,  August 8th and August 14th with the actual shows taking place October 3rd through November 12th.

CMA COUNTRY CLOSE UP: MARTINA MCBRIDE RIDES HER SOUL TRAIN

PRESS RELEASE

By Bob Doerschuk

© 2014 CMA Close Up® News Service / Country Music Association®, Inc.

Country Music headliner Martina McBride’s catalog overflows with powerfully communicative performances. The playful “I Love You,” the heartbroken ballad “Wrong Again,” and the empowering anthems “Independence Day,” “This One’s for the Girls” and “Wrong Baby Wrong” unfold along clear lines of melody, which the five-time CMA Award winner animated with her own distinctive phrasing and interpretive sense.

In contrast, much of her new album, Everlasting, pays homage to R&B and showcases vocal improvisation. A perfect example would be “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” which in essence was a sketch over which Otis Redding unleashed his volcanic and highly extemporized performance. Speaking generally, the emphasis in soul music is often on the performance, while to paraphrase a familiar line in Music City, Country recordings start with and often stay grounded on the song.

“There are some differences in phrasing,” McBride noted. “When I was first thinking about making this record and finding songs that would fit my voice, I was a little bit overwhelmed. Tackling some of these songs was a bit intimidating. But then Don (Was, producer) helped me a lot. He said, ‘Just be you. Sing it how you would sing it.’ That was a liberating moment for me. I was like, ‘Oh! That makes sense!’”

Their collaboration began with a meeting in Los Angeles. “We just had a musical conversation,” McBride recalled. “We listened to music for hours in his office to figure out what I was drawn to. I was thinking about making a mellow, singer/ songwriter record in a soul vein, something with horns, like a Ray Charles record. At some point it just clicked and we decided to lean in that direction.”

Everlasting was a milestone for Was as well. For all he had accomplished in the industry, this was the first album he had ever produced in Nashville. The musicians exemplified the best of the city’s approach to tracking, working quickly and efficiently, with no problems crossing the Country Music divide.

“We were all in the same room, Don and us, except for Martina in the vocal room,” said her longtime music director and keyboard player Jim Medlin. “He sat there with us and listened, his eyes shut the whole time, smiling like a kid in a candy shop. We all had little talk-back mics; when we’d do a pass, he didn’t give a lot of direction but just let everything unfold with a couple of words here and there. It was a real laid-back endeavor.”

“I think it was really thrilling for the musicians because they were playing for an audience of Don Was,” McBride added. “With so few instruments, everybody played so tastefully. Nobody got in anyone’s way. It was like they’d been playing together for 20 years.”

One concern that didn’t come up in the studio was whether Country fans would have any trouble connecting with Everlasting. McBride still doesn’t worry about it; she’s played some of these tracks on shows with George Strait this year, trusting that the music would speak for itself.

“To some Country fans, it might sound like I’ve taken some kind of a left turn,” she admitted. “But this is so similar to Country Music! And anything I do is probably going to have a Country sensibility because that’s what I’ve sung for so long. The common thread is that it’s me. I hope people listen and go, ‘Oh, that’s just Martina, doing what she always does.’”

MARTINA MCBRIDE SETS "JOY OF CHRISTMAS" TOUR DATES

PANDORA JEWELRY PRESENTS MARTINA MCBRIDE "THE JOY OF CHRISTMAS" TOUR
12 Dates Kick Off November 29

(Nashville, Tennessee...) - Superstar singer/songwriter Martina McBride will share her favorite time of the year with music lovers across the country once again, as she announces the 2013 Pandora Jewelry Presents Martina McBride: "The Joy of Christmas" Tour. The 12-city tour will kick off in Huntington, WV on Friday, November 29 and wrap up in Chicago on Saturday, December 21.

"This is such a fun and special tour to do," said Martina. "I love bringing Christmas to life on stage and putting everyone in the Christmas spirit. My favorite part of the show is the Q&A where I go into the audience. You never know what is going to happen, and the spontaneity is something I really enjoy."

This year's tour will include everything from pop classics like "Let it Snow" and 'I'll Be Home For Christmas" to beautiful hymns such as "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "O Holy Night." Martina's multiple wardrobe changes will enhance the entertainment.

A 12-piece band complete with a string section will back Martina, as she brings her love of the holidays to a variety of venues. A video screen depicting scenes of the season will complement Martina's versions of traditional and contemporary holiday classics, which are sure to put concert goers in the Christmas spirit.

At each stop last year, an athlete, popular radio personality or local celebrity read "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" story, while Martina sang "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch." Former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher, Green Bay Packer Jordy Nelson, Pittsburgh Steeler Brett Keisel, tv personality Storme Warren, hockey great Jim Dowd and others shared the fun segment with the Grammy winner. Plans are to again highlight celebrities during the reading of "The Grinch" again this year.

The Chicago Tribune last year reviewed: "Only a true Grinch would have been unmoved by this show, a dream of Christmas as so many wish it could really be. "It was touching. It was funny. It was fun. McBride is a sincere cheerleader for high hopes and better times ahead. She's earned her place in the Christmas pantheon, parked by the fireplace next to Bing and Andy."

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel wrote about the concert: "Inside the Milwaukee Theatre, a multigenerational audience of revelers was greeted with all the trappings of the Christmas season as Martina McBride crafted a classic holiday extravaganza. Performing a two-hour set of yuletide tunes in front of 12 formally dressed musicians, this was purely a holly jolly affair."

A three-time Academy of Country Music "Top Female Vocalist" award winner, four-time Country Music Association "Female Vocalist of the Year" and GRAMMY®-winning recording artist, Martina McBride has sold more than 18 million albums and garnered numerous #1 hits throughout her career. She was the special guest on George Strait's final tour, The Cowboy Rides Away Tour, earlier this year, and she continues her headline tour through early November.

Her nationwide volunteer group, "Team Martina," recently donated over $40,000.00 to Nashville's Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center, and last week her fans surpassed their goal to raise $20,000 for the Chastain Park Conservancy Playground, "Play Chastain." The campaign culminates with Martina's September 28, 2013 performance at the Chastain Park Amphitheatre.

MARTINA MCBRIDE'S "THE JOY OF CHRISTMAS" TOUR WRAPS WITH CHICAGO SELL OUT

Bears' Urlacher is Final Grinch

(Nashville, Tennessee...) - A light snow added to the festive mood in Chicago Friday night, as fans were filling the sold-out Chicago Theatre for the final night of superstar Martina McBride's 2012 16-city Joy of Christmas Tour. Holiday revelers young and old celebrated the season, while Martina and her 12-piece band brought their love of the holidays to theaters and other intimate venues across the country.

At each stop, an athlete, popular radio personality or local celebrity read "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" story, while Martina sang "You're A Mean One, Mr Grinch." Chicago Bears bone-crunching linebacker Brian Urlacher was the perfect Grinch on the final night of the tour. Green Bay Packer Jordy Nelson, Pittsburgh Steeler Brett Keisel, tv personality Storme Warren, hockey great Jim Dowd and others shared the stage with the Grammy winner.

"I had so much fun this year bringing back The Joy Of Christmas," said Martina. "I felt like I was spreading the Christmas spirit to so many people! We are already booking dates for next year and I can't wait to do it all again!"

Young ballerinas from local studios and schools danced at each concert. A large video screen behind the stage depicted wintry street scenes, busy shoppers, snowy mountains and a home video of the McBride's on Christmas morning. Martina delighted the crowed with at least six wardrobe changes each night, and a unique "duet" with Elvis Presley put fans in the Christmas spirit.

"Only a true Grinch would have been unmoved by this show, a dream of Christmas as so many wish it could really be," reviewed the Chicago Tribune. "It was touching. It was funny. It was fun. McBride is a sincere cheerleader for high hopes and better times ahead. She's earned her place in the Christmas pantheon, parked by the fireplace next to Bing and Andy."

Performing a two-hour set of yuletide tunes in front of 12 formally dressed musicians, this was purely a holly jolly affair."

Don Kronberg, President of NiteLite Promotions, summed up the tour: "The most powerful voice in Country Music wraps up the biggest Christmas tour on the road with an exclamation! Congrats Martina!"

Following a short break over Christmas, Martina will hit the road as George Strait's special guest on his The Cowboy Rides Away Tour, which begins January 18, 2013 in Lubbock, Texas. THE SHALOM FOUNDATION’S HYMNS HAMS AND JAMS STARRING MARTINA MCBRIDE IS A ROUSING SUCCESS

TWEET: @TheShalomKids Hymns Hams & Jams w/ @MartinaMcBride brought big support for The Shalom Foundation Christian humanitarian work in Guatemala!

Nashville, TN…(August 29, 2012)…Last week, country music superstar Martina McBride shared her time and musical talents at Nashville’s Hymns, Hams & Jams concert from Loveless Barn in support of The Shalom Foundation. The event was a huge success, raising much-needed funds in support of its medical program in Guatemala.

The August 21 Hymns, Hams & Jams concert, headlined by Martina McBride, also featured a performance and live auction with legendary songwriter Bob DiPiero. GAC and Sirius XM personality Storme Warren hosted the event. Auction items included tickets to the 2012 World Series, Nashville Predators VIP packages, Peter Nappi custom footwear, a private bus party, exclusive concert tickets and backstage experiences with artists including Brad Paisley and The Band Perry and a unique eat-and-greet experience with Zac Brown Band, all bringing in donations for the Christian organization and its work in Guatemala.

The Shalom Foundation recently brought 14-year old Angelica Morales to Vanderbilt’s Monroe Carrell Jr. Children’s Hospital to complete surgery on a complicated vascular malformation, which required more resources than were currently available at its Moore Pediatric Surgery Center in Guatemala City. A pediatric dental surgery team recently returned from The Moore Pediatric Surgery Center in Guatemala City, led by doctors and nurses from the Nashville area including Dr. George Adams, Dr. George Fiaz and Dr. Shannon Hershey. Proceeds from this month’s Hymns Hams & Jams will directly support The Shalom Foundation’s medical program.

ABOUT THE SHALOM FOUNDATION: The Shalom Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to demonstrating Christian values while providing humanitarian aid to children and their families living in extreme poverty. The organization provides educational opportunities for children and adults, essential food and clean water for the malnourished, community outreach and medical assistance for basic healthcare and critical care needs through The Moore Pediatric Surgery Center in Guatemala City. LUKE BRYAN, SARA EVANS, TIM MCGRAW & JENNIFER NETTLES JOIN JASON ALDEAN, THE BAND PERRY, KENNY CHESNEY, LADY ANTEBELLUM, MARTINA McBRIDE, RASCAL FLATTS & KENNY ROGERS TO PERFORM

TELEVISION SPECIAL TO AIR FRIDAY, APRIL 13, 2012 ON CBS

Encino, CA (March 5, 2012) - The Academy of Country Music and dick clark productions announced today that country music superstars Luke Bryan, Sara Evans, Tim McGraw and Jennifer Nettles have been added to the all-star lineup of artists scheduled to perform at the ACM PRESENTS: Lionel Richie and Friends - In Concert taping Monday, April 2, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The special will air Friday, April 13, 2012 on the CBS Television Network.

ACM Presents: Lionel Richie and Friends - In Concert is a special concert event of country music collaborations with the legendary Lionel Richie, featuring duets from his upcoming album Tuskegee, out March 26, 2012, along with solo performances. Some of Richie’s greatest hits will be performed by today’s hottest country artists including Jason Aldean (“Say You Say Me”), The Band Perry (“Penny Lover”), Luke Bryan (“Running with the Night”), Sara Evans, Lady Antebellum (“Truly”), Martina McBride (“Still”), Jennifer Nettles (“Hello”) and Rascal Flatts (“Dancing on the Ceiling”). Duets with Richie include: “My Love” with Kenny Chesney, “Sail On” with Tim McGraw, “Lady” with Kenny Rogers, and more surprises to be announced.

"It has been so rewarding to have my songs embraced by country music artists," said Lionel Richie. "Since Conway Twitty recorded 'Three Times a Lady' and Kenny Rogers sang 'Lady,' I have been welcomed into the country music family with open arms. It's the ultimate compliment to have country artists record and perform songs that I've written. I've always felt right at home in country because I was raised just down the road from Nashville in Tuskegee, Alabama, where I was immersed in country, R&B, gospel and classical music. This show will be a homecoming and family reunion combined, and I'm so glad that viewers will be able to share these special moments with us. It will be a night that I will remember for the rest of my life."

Orly Adelson, president of dick clark productions and executive producer of the special said, “We're honored to bring together the industry's greatest artists with Lionel’s legendary sound for what will be a once in a lifetime concert.”
