MICHAEL RAY WRESTLES “SPIRITS & DEMONS” WITH MEGHAN PATRICK

Duet with 2x Canadian Country Music Female Meghan Patrick
Unleashes a Tempest in a Power Ballad

Country music has always been about harnessing the drama that is real life. That authenticity of having been there, witnessing those moments whether harrowing or hallelujah, imbues the best songs with a larger force. For Michael Ray, who’d come of age playing central Florida’s icehouses, dive bars and honky tonks, when he heard “Spirits & Demons,” he knew he had something that melted down the tangle of how heartache makes you drink, booze makes you hurt and forgetting is the hardest thing to do.

“Sometimes you hear a song, and it hits you: that’s just how it is,” marvels the smoldering maverick. “You play enough bars beyond the city limits, you see it all go down. Really good people who get in their feelings, the way a good time or a way out becomes a bottomless pit. The more I listened, the more I thought it needed something else...”

That something else was a woman’s voice, both as a counterbalance and the echo of what was gone. Not quite a voice of reason, but certainly a measured reflection of how far gone, how deep the pain. Working with Dive Bars & Broken Hearts’ producer Michael Knox, they talked about and listened to many female vocalists, seeking a voice that was just the right amount of passion, fire and raw ache to match the song’s emotional charge.

“We went through so many thoughts and names; they were all great, but nobody felt quite right,” Ray now laughs. “And it’s funny, because the answer was right under my nose. I’ve been friends with Meghan for years, in the way you’ve got your ‘Hey, I’m off the road. Wanna grab a beer?’ friends when you’re home for two or three days.

“So many of us are out there weeks at a time, chasing the dream. When you’re always gone, those friends who get you and get the commitment it takes, where you pick up right where you left off? They’re gold. Meghan’s not only a friend and a great hang, no matter who’s around, she’s got a voice that can blister concrete – and a gift to reach right into a song and rip its heart out, put it in her throat and meet you line for line with some intense emotions.

“Not only do I have the woman, who like so many things on this record, is exactly what I heard in my mind, but I’ve got someone who’s actually one of my friends. To be able to sing with her, that’s awesome; and to see how people responded at The 5 Spot, when we’d never sung it in front of people, that tells me everyone else feels what she brings to this song, too.”

With Dive Bars & Broken Hearts available for pre-order, fans have been enjoying three songs already. A decided return to Ray’s harder country roots, Macon-born producer Knox upped the stakes in emotional engagement and how hard these songs hit. Already landing four #1s on the Country Airplay chart, Dive Bars & Broken Hearts reinforces a specific kind of country that comes from classic Hank Jr., Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty and an era of men of contrasts, both strong and sensitive, aware and tough.

After his sneak Dive Bars & Broken Hearts debut at The 5 Spot and his 71st appearance at the Grand Ole Opry, Ray and Patrick recaptured their magic at the Warner/Yeehaw Brewing Co. show to close out his CMA Fest. Now he’s back on the road, heading to Wildwood, NJ’s Barefoot Country Music Festival June 15 as direct support to Jon Pardi, People’s Natural Park in Johnston, PA June 16 and rejoining Pardi for WBCT’s Birthday Bash in Grand Rapids, MI June 17.

MICHAEL RAY DEBUTS "DIVE BARS & BROKEN HEARTS" TO FULL HOUSE

Intimate CMA Music Fest Kick-Off Event Shares Entire EP
6 Songs, 2 #1s and a Whole Lotta Fans at E. Nashville’s The 5 Spot

Over the last year, Michael Ray has been honing his craft, focusing his sound and going deeper and deeper into the kind of country music he was raised on in the heart of central Florida. Working with CMA Album of the Year-winning producer Michael Knox, the pair doubled down on a lean, working man’s country sound that pulled traces of Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard, Vern Gosdin, Hank Jr. and Alabama.

Thursday night, at East Nashville’s locals mostly The 5 Spot – where Lady Gaga famously kicked off her own Dive Bar Tour in support of her back-to-roots Joanne – the no frills songwriter treated his own fans to the first front-to-back performance of "Dive Bars & Broken Hearts". The six-song EP explores the phases of life, the emotions that define how we live, the reality of where we find ourselves for good times and bad.

“I had been wanting a way to play this to the people who’ve been part of my life and my career from the beginning,” says the dark-headed vocalist. “CMA Fest brings country music fans together from not just across North America, but all over the world. So many of my fans come every year, this seemed like the perfect way to debut all this music as a whole collected work without playing favorites and picking a city.”

Hunger for his new music was high. Tickets for the intimate rock bar show were gone in less than 18 hours; the fans started lining up before daybreak. With a line down the block and around the corner, spirits were high among those lucky enough to get tickets – and on Knox’s bus were the band, who’d been dropping a few songs into their set, would finally get to put it all together.

“Songs on a record are one thing,” Ray said. “But songs in a bar with real people are something else. Not until you get into that room and hear the people do you know. And growing up in Eustis, with my Grandpa working all day, coming home, getting dressed up and heading out to where the music was, I learned the power of that pretty young.”

With the teaser tracks “Workin’ On It” and “Get Her Back” drawing the strongest response, as the crowd sang along at full voice, even the unfamiliar songs seemed to hit home. From the opening “Dive Bars & Broken Hearts,” Ray drew the crowd into a world of short-circuiting neon, young bucks acting up in their trucks, heartaches that drive you to drink and the idea that beyond perfection is the happiness of trying to be a better person every single day.

"Dive Bars & Broken Hearts" is available for pre-order now. Three of the six tracks will be instantly available; June 23, the rest of the project will be completed. For fans of how real life creates great songs and reasons to hang on and get through it, Ray understands. With four chart-toppers of his own, he performed “Think A Little Less” and “Whiskey & Rain” as the cherry on top of the new music sundae. With stops at the Grand Old Opry June 9 and the Warner/Yee-Haw Brewing Co. show June 10, it’s all about getting the music into the hands of the ones who deserve it the most: the fans.

MICHAEL RAY ROAD TESTS UPCOMING NEW MUSIC

Takes Dive Bars & Broken Hearts Out To The Fans

“I learned what songs were, how to play and laugh and live in the bars...

“So let’s take the music to the people!”

Credit Connor Morss

Eustis, FL country singer Michael Ray grew up in the Sunshine State’s many dive bars, juke joints, honky tonks and the storied Sunshine Opry. For him, country music was the thing where people drinking after a long day, a tough break-up, a big win or just the need to get out of the house found their music mingled with neon, cigarette smoke, cold beer and enough heartache and high octane to siphon off whatever might be on your heart.

Coming from a family of working-class folks who know the meaning of “40 and OT,” there’s no faking how Ray gets his country on. After spending a few years as a teenager going to school, playing bars and splitting cable, he decided to chase a crazy dream to Nashville. The result was four No. 1s, including his most recent platinum, two-week chart-topper “Whiskey And Rain,” as well as a reputation as one of those artists who can hold down any stage, anywhere.

“There’s nowhere I’m more alive than playing to a roomful of people,” Ray explains. “To me, that’s where country music comes to life. I love being in the studio, putting a song into just the right instruments and frame. But if you want to really understand how a song works, go play it somewhere big enough to get loud, but small enough to feel the people.”

Having teamed with fellow force of Southern rock meets country Macon, Georgia’s Michael Knox, the pair have been bulking up Ray’s beer joint roots and streamlining his classic country song sense for what is becoming one of the most anticipated pieces of new music this spring Dives Bars & Broken Hearts. Culled from the way life puts you in places you never knew you were going to go, the six song EP creates a sense of how it feels to be a man, hold your own space and make your own way.

“When the songs are this strong, you know you’ve got something,” says the dark-headed musician with a laugh. “And when you were practically born playing this kind of music with your family, literally grew up in the bars and little roadside theaters, you can’t help yourself. It’s like a fast car, you wanna take it out and see how it handles. You know, playing new music in these kinds of places ain’t for the faint of heart; but when you’re not afraid, you bring songs this good, it’s amazing what happens.”

Under the radar, beyond the city limits, Ray has been playing several songs that are part of Dive Bars & Broken Hearts for the last few months. Currently dropping anywhere from three-to-five new songs into his set, he’s been amazed by the fan response to showcasing what has always been the sound in his mind.

Having enlisted the man behind 28 No. 1s, 50 million singles and 25 million albums sold, Ray drew on the best of what Knox brought out in 3x Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year Jason Aldean, Hank Williams, Jr., Montgomery Gentry and Thomas Rhett. Knox understands the potency of making music for people who work hard, who hit the bars and forget what’s bothering them with straight up country on the jukebox or the bandstand.

“When you came up punching it out in bars, there’s a different kind of energy. Michael let me record with live players, sing about things I knew – and trusted that who I am is who all the people I’ve been playing for since I was a kid are, too. We kept finding songs that felt right for who I am, and we kept singing live and pulling the heart out of the songs. It’s been an amazing process. When we’ve been playing, you can feel the difference with the new stuff... so we’re now using the road to really dial in what Dive Bars & Broken Hearts is gonna be.”

MICHAEL RAY ANNOUNCES NEW SONG “JUST THE WAY I AM” AVAILABLE FRIDAY, JULY 30

Hitmaker Michael Ray announces more new music from his upcoming project due later this summer, “Just The Way I Am,” a song that recognizes that people aren’t all good or all bad, balancing grinning self-deprecation with honesty and pride. “Just The Way I Am” is set for release Friday, July 30 and is available to pre-save HERE.

“This song really feels autobiographical for me,” shares Ray. “It touches on the good parts of people while still acknowledging that they have faults and flaws, myself included. I relate to it so fully, that it feels like I could have written it. I hope that when fans hear it, they understand more about me and maybe even relate to it themselves.”

Written by Michael Hardy, Ben West and Josh Miller, “Just The Way I Am” finds Ray’s smooth vocals painting a character that feels like a portrait of someone we all know in the first verse:

Might slow it on down
And wave at a passerby
Hug your neck say I love ya
‘Stead of sayin’ goodbye

Ain't lookin' for one
But won't run from a fight
I got too much pride

Hey I'm the kinda guy
That likes a simple life
The only suit and tie I own
Is for when Heaven calls somebody home

The first of many new tracks from Ray, his current single “
Whiskey And Rain”– praised by Rolling Stone for “embracing a natural throwback country sound”– is currently climbing the charts at country radio as it reaches 38 million on-demand streams.

“Just The Way I Am” follows the release of “Picture,” written shortly after the unexpected passing of his Uncle Terry and penned with Michael Hardy and David Garcia. “Picture” is about memories made and memories still to make, with American Songwriter sharing the track “captures both the existential crisis and the understanding to celebrate life that often comes during the grieving process,” while MusicRow boasts, “Because one day all you will have is the memory and a photo. A lovely sentiment, a pretty melody and a sincere performance. What’s not to love?”

Catch Ray out on the road with his Just The Way I Am 2021 Tour, as it continues tonight in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J. and wraps in the fall at the Tortuga Music Festival in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Tickets are available at MichaelRayMusic.com.

MICHAEL RAY PLOTS 2021 "JUST THE WAY I AM" TOUR

More New Music On the Way Following Latest Release “Picture” and Current Radio Hit “Whiskey And Rain”

Hot off the heels of his latest release “Picture,” Michael Ray invites fans to join him on his 21-stop 2021 Just The Way I Am Tour, kicking off later this month in Myrtle Beach, S.C. before wrapping Nov. 14 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Tickets are available at MichaelRayMusic.com.

“I can’t wait to be back out on the road and be with all of you again,” shares Ray. “There’s nothing better than being with one another and singing the songs that have brought us together over the years, and I’m so excited to share some new songs with you that have come to mean so much to me. Let’s make some memories!”

Written shortly after the unexpected passing of his Uncle Terry and penned with Michael Hardy and David Garcia, “Picture” is about memories made and memories still to make, with American Songwriter sharing the track “captures both the existential crisis and the understanding to celebrate life that often comes during the grieving process,” while MusicRow boasts, “Because one day all you will have is the memory and a photo. A lovely sentiment, a pretty melody and a sincere performance. What’s not to love?”

No stranger to the importance of taking time to reflect, the past year has allowed the Florida-native to reconnect with himself and put pen to paper more than ever before.

“In a lot of ways, I realized that I was lost and putting effort and importance on things that were probably not important,” Ray shared with American Songwriter. “Being able to be back home and hang with family and friends and actually be there…it was a soul cleanser. It sounds weird, but I reintroduced myself to myself in a way. Especially in what we do, it’s so fast paced, and you can’t put someone else’s story and compare it to your own. God made one of you, and you have a story. Don’t compare yourself or be down on yourself when God gave you this journey, and it’s yours. Own it.”

The first of many new tracks from the hitmaker, Ray’s current single “Whiskey And Rain”– praised by Rolling Stone for “embracing a natural throwback country sound”– is currently climbing the charts at country radio as it nears 25 million on-demand streams. A special Warehouse Sessions live version of the track is available now. Listen HERE.

The last 12 months have also seen Ray reach a milestone of garnering over 100 million views on his YouTube channel, with the video for “Her World Or Mine,” starring Chad Michael Murray, capturing over 25 million views alone. Additionally, Ray created his hugely successful livestream series, Honkytonk Tuesday. Showcasing his love for classic country, Honkytonk Tuesday drew in over 700,000 views in 2020 and placed him at No. 32 on the 2020 Pollstar Top 100 Livestreamers year-end list. “Picture” and “Whiskey And Rain” follow two hit albums, three No. 1s and five RIAA Gold-certified singles, including “One That Got Away,” “Think A Little Less” and “Her World Or Mine.” Keep an eye out for more new music, coming soon.

Music has always been a refuge for Michael Ray. Country music to him is family and stories, history and hope. As a fan, Ray relies on songs rich in storytelling, and as an artist, Ray believes in connecting with fans, whether they’re celebrating or in a tough spot.

Now with two hit albums, five RIAA-Gold certified songs and three No. 1’s Ray is looking back on the songs and heroes he grew up with, primed to bring back the kind of music that made him with lead single “Whiskey And Rain,” available now on all platforms accompanied by a performance video, from his forthcoming third project.

“Country music fans have allowed me to grow through my last two albums, and I can’t thank them enough for believing in me and the music. I’m very proud of everything we’ve done,” shares Ray.

“And with this project especially, I really reminded myself that I’m a fan too,” he continues. “It was a country music song that made me pick up a guitar and move to Nashville ten years ago. Keeping a fan-first mindset gave me the confidence to include really honest, vulnerable songs. It’s different than anything I’ve ever done.”

Written by Josh Thompson and Jesse Frasure and produced by Ross Copperman, “Whiskey And Rain” echoes Gary Stewart and Gary Allan, melding vintage sounds with modern country in sad commiseration:

Yeah whiskey and rain coming down, coming down

Splash of bourbon in a glass

Yeah pouring something on the pain

Let it drown, let it drown

Trying to wash away the past

Since my blue sky, sunshine, whole life

Hopped on that midnight train

‘Til the bottle runs out or the clouds roll away

It’s just the whiskey and rain

Well-versed in traditional and nostalgic 90’s country, Ray is a bridge between the genre’s past and present, citing heroes such as Earl Thomas Conley and Tim McGraw, and ready to make his own distinct contribution.

“I went to Ross (Copperman) with the idea that I wanted to be my authentic self on this record, because now I truly know who that is. I thought, ‘If we could marry what I love and pair it with his melodic talent to create this 90’s/now sound, I think that would work.’ And it has. It’s been such a cool process working with him.”

With touring currently on hold, Ray has established a weekly virtual series, Honkytonk Tuesday, where he is joined by surprise guests to perform their favorite ‘80s and ‘90s tunes. To-date, Ray has been joined by Clint Black, Mark Wills, Marty Raybon, Aaron Tippin and Steve Wariner, among others. Honkytonk Tuesdays are streamed live on Ray’s YouTube, Facebook and Twitter at 7 p.m. CT and shared on Instagram immediately following the stream.

“Whiskey And Rain” follows the release of “Her World Or Mine,” with the official music video starring Chad Michael Murray garnering over 19 million views on YouTube since its premiere with “Good Morning America” and ABC.com last October.

MICHAEL RAY RETURNS WITH NEW SINGLE “WHISKEY AND RAIN”

First New Music Since 2018’s Amos, Available on All Platforms This Friday, Sept. 25 and at Country Radio Oct. 26

Michael Ray has spent the last few months traveling between Nashville and his hometown of Eustis, Florida, where he grew up in a family of musicians, watching his grandfather’s band The Country Cousins, learning his first guitar chords at 8-years-old and eventually joining them on stage.

“If I start feeling real down, I just need to go down there for a few days to see everybody. I’ll get rejuvenated with my family. Something about being on that dirt just does a lot for me,” shares Ray. “This year helped me realize that going back home allows me to move forward, being around the people who would say, ‘We know you can do it’ when I would say, ‘I think I can do it’ as I was getting started.”

Now, with two hit albums, five RIAA Gold-certified songs, three No. 1’s and both feet firmly planted on the ground, Ray is readying his third project – a bridge between country’s past and present – with lead single “Whiskey And Rain” set for release Friday, Sept. 25. Pre-save “Whiskey And Rain” HERE.

“I miss story songs that you have to listen to all the way through to understand. This song is everything I love about country music – traditional Country music, like Tim McGraw and Earl Thomas Conley, and I want to bring that back,” shares Ray. “This is the music I originally came to Nashville to make, and I’m grateful to have this opportunity for fans to get to know me better as an artist.”

Written by Josh Thompson and Jesse Frasure and produced by Ross Copperman, “Whiskey And Rain” echoes two of Ray’s heroes, Gary Stewart and Gary Allan, melding vintage sounds with modern Country in sad commiseration:

Yeah whiskey and rain coming down, coming down
Splash of bourbon in a glass
Yeah pouring something on the pain
Let it drown, let it drown
Trying to wash away the past
Since my blue sky, sunshine, whole life
Hopped on that midnight train
‘Til the bottle runs out or the clouds roll away
It’s just the whiskey and rain

With touring currently on hold, Ray has established a weekly virtual series, Honkytonk Tuesday, where he is joined by surprise guests to perform their favorite ‘80s and ‘90s tunes.

“We started recording after we created Honkytonk Tuesday, but I knew I wanted to do this project before we put the series together,” Ray elaborates. “Creating Honkytonk Tuesday made me fully dive-in to that sound, and it was the perfect segue into ‘Whiskey And Rain.’”

To date, Ray has been joined by Clint Black, Mark Wills, Marty Raybon, Aaron Tippin and Steve Wariner, among others. Honkytonk Tuesdays are streamed live on Ray’s YouTube, Facebook and Twitter at 7 p.m. CT and shared on Instagram immediately following the stream.

“Whiskey And Rain” follows the release of “Her World Or Mine,” with the official music video starring Chad Michael Murray garnering over 19 million views on YouTube since its premiere with “Good Morning America” and ABC.

MICHAEL RAY INTRODUCES FANS TO AMOS

Sophomore Album Announced for June 1, 2018

Digital Pre-Order Available April 20

Michael Ray burst onto the scene with his self-titled, debut album featuring two RIAA Gold-certified No. 1 hits, “Kiss You in the Morning” and “Think A Little Less.” Now, the Florida native is set to release his true introductory album, Amos, June 1 on Atlantic Records/Warner Music Nashville.

Promising his most personal to date, the album is named after Ray’s grandfather, Amos, who was a huge influence on him not just musically--also in fueling his love for country music. In fact, Ray first began singing and performing in his grandfather’s band when he was only nine years old. To this day he still plays Amos’ hand-me-down guitar, a 1978 Les Paul, as a reminder of the time they spent together sharing stories, learning songs and making memories.

One memory in particular stays with Ray to this day: “The day I made my debut on the Opry stage, all I could think about was how he would be so proud,” Ray shares of his late grandfather, whose passing was just two months prior to his first bow on her stage. Ray was set to fulfill the dream they crafted over a decade before while touring dive bars, American legions and pool halls when he got the call from his family that Amos had suffered a heart attack.  “Looking back, that moment was a pivotal one--our family lost its patriarch. So, when we started making this record, before I would record vocals on the song I would ask myself, ‘is this a song I would have played proudly for him?’ It makes this album that much more special to think he would have said, ‘Ray, that’s a good one.’”

Amos features 11 tracks including Ray’s current top 20 and climbing single, “Get To You.”

THIS WEEK'S MEDIABASE ADDS LIST .... IS RADIO TUNING IN TO YOUR FAVORITE NEW MUSIC?

Congratulations to all of the artists making this week's Mediabase Adds list. People are paying attention to the new music and it's starting to show by these adds to reporting stations. Let's keep that trend going!

REMEMBER: An add does NOT guarantee air play, it simply means the station has added the song to their library. Air play is based on demand and sales, so get on the phone/internet/text and start requesting your favorites now. Most major radio stations now allow you to text or email your requests so it's not just making a phone call anymore. If you don't request, don't complain when you don't hear your favorite artist on the radio, plain and simple. These guys need our help, so let's show them we support them and their hard work. Don't depend on their side to do all the promoting. If you really love an artist, jump in there and work with them to get the word out. Your voice does make a difference and it shows in these add numbers each week. Radio is listening, we just have to keep talking.

Just a side note: Notice the number of new artist adds this week. These numbers show that radio is listening to you. Keep requesting and get these artists added nationwide! Way to go!

SINGLE REVIEW: "KISS YOU IN THE MORNING" - MICHAEL RAY

SINGLE: "Kiss You in the Morning"
ARTIST: Michael Ray
REVIEWER: Alyse Smith
Follow Alyse on Twitter at @ASmith1300

Michael Ray’s debut single “Kiss You In The Morning” is full of impish delight.  The latest in a string of Florida natives heading north to Nashville, Michael Ray does not disappoint.

Growing up in a musical family, the innate desire to play burned in his blood as young as 5 years old. It only grew stronger as he grew older and experienced more, wanting to communicate by song and guitar.  A move to Nashville was in the cards and this is the first taste of officially released music for Michael.  As one might guess from the title, the song’s about all the different times and places he’s wanting to kiss the girl.  Sweet with a smirk, this song and singer embodies honeyed whiskey.  So easy to drink up, it might be a little dangerous.  All the things he’s finding quite tempting about her are listed, her jeans hugging up on her are a definite plus.  The charismatic singer serenades you with his own particular brand of charm and does a great job at it.  A debut that is sure to ride the airwaves and surely the first of many we’ll hear from Michael Ray, “Kiss You In The Morning” has all the makings of a hit.

If you want more of Michael, there is his “Tour Bootleg” EP available on his website with 5 songs including “Kiss You In The Morning.”  It’s also available on Spotify!  Catch Michael on tour opening for none other than Sam Hunt on his Lipstick Graffiti tour in March and April.
