BEHIND THE BOYS: THE MIGHTY OAKS BAND

When you go to an Oak Ridge Boys show, you're going to see Joe Bonsall, Duane Allen, Richard Sterban and William Lee Golden, right? Well of course you are, but have you ever taken the time to say hello to the guys that make up the Mighty Oaks Band? These guys are some of the finest and most talented musicians in the industry with many years of experience under their collars. They've played the stage with some of country's biggest names and stood on some of the world's largest stages in the most popular venues. I am continually impressed by these men that stand on that stage behind the Oak Ridge Boys, every city, every night, every song and travel alongside them mile for mile for over 150 shows a year.

These guys are always on the top of their game, the consummate professionals and the best musicians the business has to offer. These men always give 100%, even when they may not feel like it. They are always smiling and laughing, having a great time and that is a huge part of what makes an Oak Ridge Boys show such a fantastic show. I always look forward to attending these shows, not just because of the love I have for the music and the Oaks themselves, but because of the friendships I've established with the guys behind the scenes. They truly don't get any better. I thought I'd take a minute and introduce you to each of them and give you a little inside look into their background. The next time you're at an Oaks show, take the time to say hello to these outstanding musicians and wonderful people. They're friendly, down to earth and so much fun. They are an integral part of the Oak Ridge Boys experience and they make a show so much fun. I am blessed to call them friends.

Roger Eaton (Guitar)

Bio: You may recognize Roger as the guitarist for a number of great artists including Lorrie Morgan, Joe Diffie, and playing lead and rhythm guitar for songwriter and recording artist, Anthony Smith. Roger has also been seen on The Barbara Mandrell Show, The Tanya Tucker Show and The Vern Gosdin Show as well as All Access on CMT, Prime Time Country, The Grand Ole' Opry, Crook and Chase and many others. He's a high demand session player whose work includes guitar and vocals for Barbara Mandrell's "Acoustic Attitude" and "Get to the Heart."

Ron Fairchild (Keyboards)

Bio: Born in 1958 and raised in Music City, Ron has an “Oak Ridge” heritage. His father, Tommy, played piano for The Oak Ridge Boys from 1957 until 1972! Ron has a 20+ year personal history with the group. Ron engineered the digital keyboard system he plays on stage and has built his own recording studio. He's pretty much the "class clown" on stage and at any given time, if you look over at him, he's got a big grin on his face and cracking jokes. When he's not on the road or overseeing his studio, Ron enjoys sailing, photography, learning to fly airplanes, and playing with his HAM radio.

Rex Wiseman (Fiddle, Pedal Steel, Guitar, Mandolin)

Bio: Born and raised in Birdseye, Indiana, Rex grew up in a musical family. His father, four brothers, and sister were “back porch” pickers, playing mostly for their own enjoyment. Rex, who was the youngest, learned to play the mandolin at age five. Eventually he taught himself to play fiddle, guitar, pedal steel, electric bass, dobro, banjo, and mandolin (and God only know what else). When Rex was 11, he became a “professional,” earning money by playing in a local country band with his brother. At 16, he put together his own band. Then in 1980, he moved to Nashville to work with Little David Wilkins. He subsequently worked with John Conlee, Bill Anderson, Rhonda Vincent, Billy Yates, Phillip Claypool, and Clay Walker. Rex’s early dream was for a solo record deal. His timing was less than perfect, however, because Contemporary Country was in vogue in the early eighties, and he played and sang traditional style. He finally gave up on solo aspirations in May 1985, two months before Randy Travis became an “overnight” sensation! Timing is everything! He is married to his wondeful wife Kim, has two daughters, Mary Jo and Kady, as well as three granddaughters. Despite his obvious love for music, his love for family runs much deeper. They are the love of his life.

David Northrup (Drums, Percussion)

Bio: New York native David Northrup has been on the Nashville music scene since 1995. The talented drummer and percussionist has extensive touring experience, matched by a long list of recording credits and work he has done with a multitude of artists in various genres, from rock legend John Waite, the James Brown Horns, John Mellencamp, and guitarist Les Dudek, to jam band sensation the Disco Biscuits. David has also worked with an array of country artists, including Wynonna Judd, Travis Tritt, Joe Diffie, Doug Stone, Tanya Tucker, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Lila McCann, Jo De Messina, Jo-El Sonnier, Pam Tillis, Ty Herndon, Lee Greenwood, Louise Mandrell, Connie Smith, Gene Watson, Deborah Allen, and Anthony Smith. When not touring or recording, David also produces and works as an international clinician. For two consecutive years, he placed in the prestigious Modern Drummer Readers Poll, voted #3 Country Drummer and #2 Clinician of the year in 2008 and #2 Country Drummer and #2 Clinician in 2009.

His television and video appearances include the Tonight Show, the Today Show, the Jimmy Kimmel Show, the CMA Awards, the ACM Awards, CMT’s Flameworthy Video Awards, the 2005 Jammy Awards, GAC Grand Ole Opry Live, PBS Concert Special SoundStage, Farm Aid 2000, and many more. When he's not sitting behind the drums, you can find David at home enjoying time with his wife Sandy and their children.

Scotty Simpson (Bass Guitar)

Bio: Scotty Simpson was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He began playing guitar at age eleven and within a few years had formed a band with his older brother, Steve. It quickly became apparent there was a problem; everyone wanted to play lead so there was no bass player. Scotty decided to give bass a shot, and the love affair began. He spent every waking hour sitting in front of the stereo, moving a record needle back again and again, until he learned every lick on every album he had. By the time he was fourteen he was playing in clubs. Luckily, his brother, who was ten years older, made for the perfect guardian, so Scotty’s parents allowed him to do so. A week after he got out of high school he took off on the road with a traveling club band—and never stopped. He moved to Nashville in 1996 and within a few months landed gigs with Tanya Tucker, Pam Tillis, and finally settled in with Travis Tritt for about thirteen years. Known as the Long Tall Texan, you can always find Scotty with a smile on his face and getting into some kind of trouble onstage so you have to pay attention. He's even got his own fan page on Facebook - Scotty Simpson Fans. Go figure!

Jeff Douglas (Guitar, Dobro)

Bio: Jeff Douglas was born and raised in Kentucky, spending most of his early years in the small town of Paris. An only child, his dad worked for the Post Office and his mom worked for the local school system. While attending the University of Kentucky, Jeff began working at a music store repairing and building guitars. It was in the local music scene that he met longtime friend, Paul Martin. Through this friendship he met the Oaks. In 1995, Jeff moved to the Nashville area to take a job as the ORB Band Tech. He was later promoted to Stage Manager. Jeff has played the guitar since he was sixteen and in 1999, when the Oaks needed a bit of extra “fill” in the show, he started playing three or four songs on rhythm guitar. However, he played offstage while also attending to his production work! In 2004, the Oaks released their Bluegrass-flavored The Journey CD. Jeff immediately bought a dobro and learned to play it so he could contribute to an additional four or five songs on the show. However, when playing the dobro he walks onstage—no longer a ghost player! In his spare time Jeff enjoys woodworking, tennis, photography, and recording. He is single and has no children.

YOUR CHOICES FOR THE BEST INTERACTIVE TWEETERS IN COUNTRY MUSIC ARE ...

So we asked you who your choices were for the artists who were the best at fan interaction on Twitter and you guys gave us A LOT of great artists and we'd like to share those artists with everyone and encourage you to follow them and to get to know them. These people understand the importance of social media and that fans want that social connection. They're all great people and prove how much they appreciate you by taking the time out of their crazy schedules to respond to your tweets and in some cases, even randomly initiating conversations out of the blue with fans. They post more than what's going on with their careers and themselves, they tweet about and with YOU! They also tweet out some entertaining photos, stories and jokes. They run their own Twitter accounts and don't always rely on someone else to do the talking for them. Sometimes management may tweet things out and that's understandable but the majority of what you see on their timelines comes directly from the artist themselves. These are the kinds of people that Twitter was made for, the reason you signed up for Twitter and they make it worth being here.

We included both new and veteran artists so if you don't know someone on the list, take the time to check them out, listen to their music, follow them and see what you think. Keep in mind that they are all very busy and get hundreds of tweets a day if not more, so while it may not be an immediate response, they do the best they can so don't get offended or mad if you don't get something back right away! They do have lives outside of Twitter too :-)

If you have someone you'd like to add to the list, feel free to leave their name and Twitter handle in the comments section and we'll add them! The list is in alphabetical order by first name.

WHEN YOU BUY FROM AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST ...

I think it's something that anyone who purchases music should read. Independent artists are just as good if not better than alot of what you hear on the radio, they just haven't been signed by a major label or choose to remain independent. The music you buy isn't a hobby to them, it's how they live from day to day, royalty to royalty, rent check to rent check. It's their heart, their soul, their sweat, their tears, their anger, their pain, their fear of failure, their joy of success. The next time you purchase music, please consider purchasing from a new artist or an independent artist. They keep the world singing with their craft. Thank you.

JO DEE MESSINA ANNOUNCES ALBUM RELEASE DATE FOR "ME" - TUESDAY, MARCH 18

THE FIERCELY INDEPENDENT COUNTRY SINGER/SONGWRITER’S KICKSTARTER FUNDED PROJECT IS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL ONE TO COME OUT OF NASHVILLE

MUCH ANTICIPATED FULL-LENGTH MARKS JO DEE’s MOST PERSONAL ALBUM TO DATE AND WILL BE RELEASED ON HER OWN DREAMBOUND RECORDS

JO DEE MESSINA fans will soon get what they’ve been clamoring for as the multi-platinum, award-winning country singer/songwriter has just announced that her new full-length album will be released Tuesday, March 18. With its title ME chosen by fans, the album marks Jo Dee's’s most personal album to date as she wrote or co-wrote many of the songs and will release it on her own newly established label, Dreambound Records, with distribution by eOne Music. For the first time in her career, Jo Dee is able to boldly do things her own way and pave her own path to success.

Spring 2013 found the fiercely independent, outspoken, and driven artist free from a long-term record deal. Jo Dee became free to make the album she wanted, so the forward-thinking country star took to the crowd-funding website Kickstarter.com to create a new full-length album for her fans, with her fans. The “My time. Our music.” campaign allowed her backers to be involved with every step that goes into creating and recording the album, and opportunities to be rewarded with exclusive content and one-of-a-kind opportunities.

Throughout the process, her fans helped Jo Dee surpass her $100,000 goal, making her Kickstarter.com campaign the most successful one to come out of Nashville and at the time of completion, the 15th largest funded music campaign in Kickstarter history. The fans were given a voice. Via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Stage-It, her fans selected which songs would be included on the album, submitted artwork for her label logo, selected the album title ME and chose the album’s first single “Peace Sign.” Check out a lyric video for the song here: http://youtu.be/TqllF4aZkuo.

Following her departure from her record label, Jo Dee began reflecting and started putting pen to paper. The feisty song “Not Dead Yet” was born. “I had been listening to the naysayers around me and thought, ‘I have so much to offer now that I'm free of the restraints I had with my label.’ I then had a conversation with my friend and co-writer saying, ‘I have so much left to do, so much left to say. Goodness! I'm not dead yet!’ And that is how the song was born. It talks about how if I listened to the small thinkers and naysayers, I might as well throw in the towel. Music is my life, it's a part of who I am. I'm not ready to give up that part of my life. Hell, I'm just getting started!”
The wife and mother of two young sons road tested a few of the new tracks, and a crowd favorite at every show is “A Woman’s Rant.” “This song had many more verses,” laughs Messina. “It was written in a few minutes. My youngest baby wouldn't sleep longer than two hours. One night I was sick and could barely move so I tried to wake up my husband to get the baby, but I couldn't get him to budge. After feeding the baby, burping him, changing him, I was wide awake. That's when I went downstairs and wrote ‘A Woman’s Rant.’ It's literally a day in the life of me. Ha!” She performed the song on “The Today Show” this past summer: http://www.today.com/video/today/52082917.

Jo Dee has always maintained an honest and personal relationship with her fans. Me also allows the public to see and identify with her vulnerable side and insecurities. “The fans chose ME as the album title. I think it fits because this record explores many different sides of who I am. The song came about through a conversation with one of my co-writers, Kathie Baillie of Baillie & The Boys, who has a grown daughter. I was feeling the stress of trying to be everything to everyone and asked her how she did it. There is a part of me that thinks when I look in the mirror, I should see Wonder Woman. When I see me, it terrifies me. Can I really pull off all the things I have to be to so many? I don't know. We'll see. This song gives folks a peek at the vulnerable side of me which isn't shown that often.”

Overall, ME is a journey. It’s honest. It’s funny. It’s sad. It’s life. At this point in her life, she isn’t afraid. She’s a woman, a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend and an incredibly gifted vocalist and songwriter who is thankful for all she’s accomplished and looking forward to all that awaits her.
“This album is truly for you, the people who appreciate the creative process, as well as my amazing fans,” exclaims Jo Dee. “There’s no question, I wouldn’t be where I am today without your love and support. You’ve been with me since the beginning. This album is a fresh start for me, and I want us to go on this exciting journey together.”

CHUCK WICKS RELEASES NEW SINGLE “US AGAIN”

Country Star Announces Forthcoming Album on New Label Home Blaster Records

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Jan 14, 2014) – New music from Chuck Wicks is coming to country fans as Wicks’ new single “Us Again” has just shipped to radio for a Jan. 27 impact date. The song will also be available for download via iTunes and all other major digital outlets on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Co-written by Wicks, Andy Dodd and Tiffany Vartanyan, the contemplative love song is the lead single from his forthcoming album, which Wicks recently announced he will be releasing on his new label home, Blaster Records. Wicks joins an accomplished roster of talent, including Aaron Lewis, Hank Williams Jr. and newcomer Jared Ashley.

“Chucks Wicks is an incredible singer and an equally gifted writer,” says Blaster Records President Derek Simon. “He’s a consummate professional with an amazing connection to his audience. We expect that audience is going to grow exponentially with Chuck’s new music. We couldn’t be more excited about having him join our family.”

Wicks demonstrated his writing and producing talents last year on his independently released EP Rough, which received an overwhelming response from fans and rave reviews from critics. GAC praised his “remarkably seasoned delivery” and “impressively soulful inflections” while Country Weekly hailed him as “one of the most talented young artists in country music.” Since the release of Rough, Wicks has been hard at work on a full-length release and is eager to give fans a taste with the release of “Us Again.”

“‘Us Again’ is one of those songs that reminds us all why we fall in love in the first place,” shares Wicks. “It reminds us to never lose those moments that were so great and so simple in the beginning... and if we do? It's never too late to get them back again.”

CMA CLOSEUP: NEW ARTIST SPOTLIGHT - JON PARDI

By Bob Doerschuk

© 2014 CMA Close Up® News Service / Country Music Association®, Inc.

Saloon pianos clink, guitars crunch and fiddles, well, they fiddle throughout Write You a Song, Jon Pardi’s debut album on Capitol Records Nashville. And it fits together into a package that practically dares you not to get up and dance.

A lot of Pardi’s energy stems from days on the road and long nights on stages throughout his home state of California. He was already absorbing the spirit of real-world Country when he performed “Friends in Low Places” at age 7 for his father’s 30th birthday party. His first songs came at 12, his first band debuted two years later. The move to Nashville followed two restless years at Butte Junior College.

Apparently his experiences left Pardi unscarred. While there are no tears-in-my-beer blues here, that’s not to say he avoids introspective material. But even on the down-tempo “Love Hangs Around” (written by Pardi, Treat Summar and Odie Blackmon), you sense that it’s just a matter of time before the lyric’s two long-distance lovers enjoy a happy reunion.

Similarly, the rockin’ numbers have dimension. You’ll hear hardly a mention of trucks or cut-off jeans; instead, actual stories inhabit his down-home grooves. The title cut (Pardi, Bart Butler and Davy Ulbrich), as well as “Up All Night” (Pardi, Butler and Brett Beavers), showcase his fondness for melodies built on tight, repetitive motifs. The guy just sounds like he’s having a ball, and with his amiable drawl he’s inviting us all to join him.

THIS WEEK'S MEDIABASE ADDS ... IS RADIO TUNING IN TO YOUR FAVORITE NEW MUSIC?

Congratulations to the artists making this week's Mediabase Adds list, with special kudos to Brantley Gilbert, Eric Church and Chris Young who represent new artists with being the most 3 added NEW ARTISTS this week!

Thanks to your requests, radio stations nationwide are paying attention to the new music and it's starting to show by these add numbers. Let's keep that trend going! It's important to keep in mind that an artist's true measure of success isn't based on numbers, it's the impact they make on their fans.

REMEMBER: An add does NOT guarantee air play, it simply means the station has added the song to their library. Air play is based on demand and sales, so get on the phone/internet/text and start requesting your favorites now. Most major radio stations now allow you to text or email your requests so it's not just making a phone call anymore. If you don't request, don't complain when you don't hear your favorite artist on the radio, plain and simple. These guys need our help, so let's show them we support them and their hard work. Don't depend on their side to do all the promoting. If you really love an artist, jump in there and work with them to get the word out. Your voice does make a difference and it shows in these add numbers each week. Radio is listening, we just have to keep talking and make sure they hear what YOU the LISTENER are saying.

Just a side note: Notice the number of new artist adds this week. These numbers show that radio is listening to you. Keep requesting and get these artists added nationwide! Way to go!

Nashville, TN (January 13, 2014) – Last Thursday (1/9), Will Hoge performed his top-selling hit single “Strong” on CBS’ The Late Show with David Letterman. With over 165,000 copies sold to date, the song is on the verge of breaking Top 40 at Country radio and quickly garnered national attention for serving as the Chevy Silverado campaign anthem. Watch at 40:00 here. The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter is also holding strong on the Americana music charts with his latest album NEVER GIVE IN (Cumberland Recordings/Thirty Tigers) launching into the Top 5. The project which features “Strong” is available everywhere now.

NEVER GIVE IN is a life motto for the Nashville native who catapulted into the national spotlight in 2012. Spending the early part of the year supporting Dierks Bentley's arena headlining tour, Hoge was introduced to his first dose of mainstream country. The release of the Eli Young Band Platinum smash “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” which he co-wrote with Eric Paslay, garnered an enormous amount of buzz at Country radio, earning Hoge nominations for the 2013 GRAMMY Country Song of the Year, 2013 ACM Song of the Year and 2012 CMA Song of the Year. While raising Hoge's profile as a hit songwriter, the song also introduced his music and records to the Country music audience; a decade removed from major label release on Atlantic Records, CAROUSEL.

New music and select tour dates forthcoming from country supergroup

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 9, 2014) -- Country Music Hall of Fame group Alabama has signed a new management deal with Tony Conway’s Ontourage Management.

After signing with RCA in 1980, Alabama soared to the top with 21 consecutive Number 1 hit singles, a feat most likely never to be equaled in any genre. During their career, they have had 43 singles that have topped the country charts and have sold more than 73 million albums worldwide. They are one of the most celebrated groups, scoring more than 150 major industry awards including two GRAMMY Awards, the Minnie Pearl Humanitarian Award, Entertainer of the Year Awards three times from the CMA and five times from the ACM, as well as ACM Artist of the Decade. They have earned 21 Gold, Platinum, and Multi-Platinum albums and were named the RIAA Country Group of the Century.

Band members Randy Owen, Jeff Cook, and Teddy Gentry stated: “We have known Tony Conway for 30 years, and his reputation and major accomplishments in the music industry made this a natural fit. We want to continue our journey, and we feel Tony can help us accomplish that.”

Tony Conway, an industry veteran with more than 38 years of experience, spent 33 years with Buddy Lee Attractions, eventually becoming CEO and co-owner. In 2010, Conway launched his own companies, Conway Entertainment Group and Ontourage Management. Through the years, Conway has represented a veritable “Who’s Who” roster of clients including George Strait, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Garth Brooks, George Jones, Lorrie Morgan, The Dixie Chicks, Miranda Lambert and Jason Aldean, to name a few.

“I have had the pleasure of knowing the members of Alabama for many years, and I am extremely proud they have chosen us to help further their endeavors and work with them on future projects. New music, selected tour dates, a film documentary, and a book are in the plans. Alabama has created an incredible legacy through both music and philanthropy. We are honored to be part of their team,” said Conway.
