JOE BONSALL: WHAT HE IS TO ME

One word usually comes to mind when one mentions Joe Bonsall of the Oak Ridge Boys - legendary. I mean he has accomplished so much in the past 50 years with the group: surviving multiple lineup changes, winning every award a musical group can win, performing in Russia, multiple #1 hits including "Elvira", one of the most played songs of 1981, sold over 40 MILLION albums, became a member of the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame, performing for various US presidents and so many other things I can't even begin to name. He's done it all and seen it all. Legend is described as "an extremely famous person or notorious person, especially in a particular field". Sure, that describes Joe pretty spot on but there is another word that I believe defines him even more accurately - hero. The definition of hero is "a person noted for acts of fine quality and greatly admired." THAT is my friend, Joe Bonsall.

I am somehow blessed to call this man a true friend, not sure why God thought I was deserving of this but He did.  I was 11 years old in 1981 when I got hooked on "Elvira" so my dad bought me my first country music album for Christmas that year, "Fancy Free". I listened to it and sang really badly to it nonstop. I loved the Oak Ridge Boys the first time I heard them and haven't stopped. I could never have dreamed that 13 years later I would be blessed to meet one of my "heroes" and find out through him what that word really means.

Joe and I met via Twitter in 2010 when I posted a random tweet laughing about a guy in my apartment complex outside yelling "Scott! Scott!" and I volunteered to help him find his son and he looked at me and said "Scott's my cat." Of course I was like "Who names a cat Scott?" Into the tweet pops Bonsall laughing and telling me "My cat is named Ted." I had no idea this man even knew who I was or that he noticed any nonsense I tweeted so ya'll know I about fell outta my chair. We started a conversation and a few weeks later, he sent me a message asking if I lived near Smithfield, NC because the Oaks had a show coming up and he would love to meet in person. I happened to live about an hour away at the time and there was no way I was turning down an opportunity like this so I said yes, about a month later made the trip to Smithfield and a friendship was started.

Since that day in November 2010, I have only missed one show in my area. I do not take any opportunity to spend time with Joe for granted and to horse laugh like we tend to. This man isn't just a friend, he is family (but kinda like that cousin you hide in the attic). We've shared the best conversations, the deepest laughs, eye rolls (like when Billy Dean busted in our interview in Kenansville, NC), late night butt dials when he would dial my number instead of his daughter's, strange gifts like a singing and dancing rabbi doll, a hand painted rock that looks like an owl that I named "Owlvira", a huge stuffed owl that I sent to the office, a funny "no trespassing" sign for his farm, a book about his cat probably plotting his demise and so many other laughables I can't even remember them all. What I do remember is the special place in my heart that only Joe will have. He was the first person to give this NC girl who just loves music a chance to grow a promotions 'business". He never hesitated when I asked him about an interview, he would create videos telling people about my promotions website and he was always there to help me, something very few in his position have ever done, much less even paid attention to an independent blogger who didn't have a million followers or corporate backing. He gave me time and that means the world to me.

While I am sad that I won't see him on the road when the Oak Ridge Boys come around and that I won't hear that recognizable tone that permeates the air like only his voice can, I am so happy that he is at home spending time with his biggest fans, his cats. (Oh, and Mary, his daughters, grandkids and the various wildlife like the deer on his farm too). He's given the world more of his time and attention than we deserve and it's time for him to rest, to be a dad and a husband and to enjoy the quiet.

Thank you for always just being Joe, not just the Oak Ridge Boy, but the wonderful, caring and loving person that you are. I love you buddy and wish you the best. You are a blessing in my life that I say thank you for every day. I can only hope that I can be the blessing to others that you have been to me. I will always have a smile in my heart when I think about you.

Love,
Jennifer (the other one ... LOL)

THE LEGENDARY OAK RIDGE BOYS CELEBRATE THE CHRISTMAS SEASON WITH FAREWELL TOUR PERFORMANCE IN ROANOKE RAPIDS, NC

Artists: The Oak Ridge Boys
Date: 11/30/2023
Venue: Weldon Mills Theatre - Roanoke Rapids, NC
Reviewer / Photographs : Jennifer Smith

After 50 years on the road, the legendary Oak Ridge Boys made a stop at the beautiful Weldon Mills Theatre in Roanoke Rapids, NC on Thursday, November 30 and sang their final musical farewell to a room packed full of love, smiles, laughter, tears, friendship and memories. They said thank you in true ORB style with a magical Christmas show that only reinforced why these men and their band and crew have stood tall above the rest over the years and are loved and appreciated by so many.

The doors opened early and the room filled quickly while waiting for the show to begin with hugs between old friends and introductions between new friends, stories of personal connections with the Boys and the excited anticipation of what memories the night was to bring. You could feel something different in the air, this wasn't a normal performance for the ORB or for those of us in the crowd. This was something difference, the shining star at the top of the tree, the reminder of what Christmas is about - love, hope, new beginnings and a destination within ourselves. The Oaks have been to many destinations over the years but now they begin their final journey back to their families and homes.

This show kicked off with a couple of Christmas tunes, "Let It Snow" and "Christmas Time's A Comin'" then launched into a handful of the hits people were anxious to hear - "American Made", "Leavin' Louisiana" and everyone's favorite, "Elvira".  Fans were smiling from ear to ear, cheering, and singing their off key hearts out. That's love right there.

Then, the tone changed and the "snow" began to fall and it was time to bring out the Christmas fun with everyone gathered in front of the flickering "warmth" of the on-stage fireplace to sing their favorite Christmas songs. They rang in the segment with beloved Christmas standards including "Jingle Bells" and "Blue Christmas" and also some other greats like "Christmas Carol", "Christmas Cookies" and "What's What I Like About Christmas."

Here comes Santa Claus ... literally. I LOVE this part of the show. A cardboard Santa Claus comes bopping across the stage bringing in laughs because it's so funny to watch. The kids in the audience were laughing but had no idea that in just a few minutes, the big guy himself would be making an appearance. The stage filled with smoke and just like magic, there he was in all of his bearded red glory - Santa. He greeted the crowd, cracked a few jokes and came down to the front of the stage to play some reindeer games with the children and pulling Santa hats from his bag, putting them on each head and the faces of the children lit up and then he took pictures. What a great way to incorporate children into the night. You rarely see that anymore. That just another reason to love the Oak Ridge Boys, they have the biggest hearts.

Next came the "Rocking Stools", where each of the Boys would sit on a stool in front of the "fire" and told their most personal Christmas memories, bringing tears not only to their eyes but to ours as well. I can tell you with complete honesty that mine were flowing pretty freely. Glad I brought Kleenex. You could hear the emotion and the gratitude as each heartfelt story was told. Joe Bonsall talked about his parents and with tears in his eyes and a passionate voice, recited his composition "Daddy's Christmas Eve", Duane Allen reminded us of the blessing of love with his song "Happy Christmas Eve", William Lee Golden sang about the love of children with "Thank God for Kids" and Richard wrapped up the memories with everyone's favorite, "The Christmas Song". The final segment of the evening brought out the true, original meaning of what this season is all about - the first Christmas eve, the birth of a special baby boy and the ultimate love of Jesus who brought joy to the world.

What a wonderful way to close the book on a true "Down Home Christmas".

Thank you to the Oak Ridge Boys - Joe Bonsall, Duane Allen, William Lee Golden and Richard Sterban, the Mighty Oaks Band - Rex Wiseman, Scotty Simpson, Austin Curcuruto,  Ronnie Fairchild, and Darin Favorite, their wonderful crew - Darrick Kinslow (Tour Manager), Marko Hunt, David Boots, Chris Boyd, Steven "Coop" Cooper, Mike "Sweet" Campbell and everyone else in the organization for years of the best quality entertainment and for memories that don't fade. Thank you for the privilege of not just being able to call you friends, but family over the past 15 years and during that time for allowing me the access to review your shows and take pictures.

Thank you to Julie and Allison of Barn Burner Promotions, the best security guys I've ever had the pleasure of working with and the wonderful staff of the Weldon Mills Theatre for such a great experience. Y'all know how to promote and host a show!

The Oaks will be saying thank you for the memories with a few stops into 2024 so be sure to check their website for dates and ticket info and keep up with them on social media.

With their "American Made: Farewell Tour" underway, the legendary Oak Ridge Boys added one more historical notch in their music belt yesterday, November 20.

The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development in Oak Ridge, Tennessee honored the group with their well deserved very own Tennessee Music Pathways marker along with a key to the city and a proclamation honoring everything they've done for the area.

“It was a very special day,” shares Golden. “Being part of this remarkable group is something I never take for granted. Our journey has been uniquely blessed and one that very few have had the opportunity to achieve. I am thankful to Duane Allen, Joe Bonsall and Richard Sterban for their contributions to the Oak Ridge Boys, along with our band and co-workers. A special thank you to Gus Arrendale and Springer Mountain Farms for helping make this day possible!”

“I can’t think of anywhere I would rather have been than at the Grove Theater in Oak Ridge with the kind folks at the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development who worked so hard to design this marker,” expresses Sterban. “The Oak Ridge Boys as a group goes back 80 years to the original members, Wally Fowler, Lon “Deacon” Freeman, Curly Kinsey and Johnny New, and we have never forgotten them or their contributions. It has been a privilege to build on that.”

#TOURINGNEWS - THE OAK RIDGE BOYS ANNOUNCE HISTORIC AMERICAN MADE: FAREWELL TOUR

“Rooted in gospel…Positive in perspective…Bringing joy…Bringing excitement…And, whether singing songs of faith, love songs, or the national anthem at hundreds of sporting events or the giddy-ups that precede the oom papas and the mow-mows….Bringing harmony…To a world that’s rife with dissonance”

– Jody Williams at Induction of The Oak Ridge Boys into the Country Music Hall of Fame, October 25, 2015

GRAMMY® Award-winning and Country Music Hall of Fame members, The Oak Ridge Boys are officially celebrating their 50th Anniversary this October. With this celebration, The Oak Ridge Boys are announcing their American Made: Farewell Tour! The group, Duane Allen(1966), Joe Bonsall (1973), William Lee Golden (1965), and Richard Sterban (1972) are excited to celebrate both milestones with fans with the announcement of this tour.

“We are doing a farewell tour because we owe it to our fans to say goodbye,” shares William Lee Golden. “They have always been there for us through the good times and the bad. I will always be thankful to every person who came out to a show, bought a t-shirt, played our music, and overall, loved us enough to spend their hard-earned money whenever they could. This tour is for you!”

“I want to thank God for 50 years of singing with three of my best friends and for the fans who have been there for us,” shares Richard Sterban. “This is a celebration and we hope to see you there.”

Designated as America’s national anthem singers by the MENC (National Association for Music Educators), The Oak Ridge Boys released their #1 hit single, “American Made” in February 1983. Their love for God and country remains true to this day, and with this being the 40th Anniversary of the single, it seemed fitting to incorporate “American Made” into their farewell.

The Oak Ridge Boys have received four Academy of Country Music, two American Music, five Billboard, four Country Music Association, five Grammy, and twelve Gospel Music Association Dove awards, just to name a few. They are members of the Grand Ole Opry, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and the Country Music Hall of Fame. They have achieved seventeen #1 hits including “Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight,” “Bobbie Sue,” “Trying To Love Two Women,” “(I’m Settin’) Fancy Free,” “American Made,” and the unforgettable “Elvira.” With an astounding thirty-seven Top 20 country hits, with twelve gold, three platinum, and one double-platinum album, The Oak Ridge Boys have made their mark in every facet of the gospel, pop, and country music industry.

“For all of my career I have always been a planner, sometimes planning 2 or 3 years in advance, what we will do, where we will go, and when we record,” expresses Duane Allen. “As we celebrate 50 years of being together, just as you see us, we will, also, begin our American Made: Farewell Tour. I don’t know how long the tour will last, but we hope to return to as many parts of the country as we can. Thank you so much for these 50 years. For me, it’s 57 1/2 years. I have given you the best part of my life and you have rewarded me with a wonderful career. Thank you, our dear fans. Thanks to God for His divine guidance. Thank you to our wonderful organization. Thank you to all the supporting companies who represent us. And thank you to our families.”

In the early seventies, The Oak Ridge Boys continued to expand their cutting-edge style. After the addition of Richard Sterban in 1972 and Joe Bonsall in 1973, the Oaks were forever changed with a new direction, a new sound, and a new path. Their career stands alone with its legacy, its style, and its continued contributions to gospel and country music.

“I was 25 years old in 1973 when I joined The Oak Ridge Boys,” shares Joe Bonsall. “I am 75 years old in 2023 and I am STILL an Oak Ridge Boy. It has been and still IS an amazing ride.”

THE OAK RIDGE BOYS - 50 YEARS OF FRIENDSHIP, MUSIC AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN

When best friends agree to be each other’s supporters, through thick and thin, it never fails to last the distance and man what distances The Oak Ridge Boys have gone together. Their music has no age as it is always renewing itself, much like the boys themselves do year after year.

The current lineup of the legendary group began in 1973 when Joe Bonsall, the final "new" member of the group took his place in musical history alongside Duane Allen, Richard Sterban and William Lee Golden. Who could have known that this group of four friends would turn into one of music's most prolific and loved groups of all time, still going strong in 2023 and head on into 2024 with no signs of letting time slow them down? They did. They knew. They were right.

They've seen it all, so many beautiful places and have been a part of so many amazing things ...

  • 1976 - They were part of only the second American tour of The Soviet Union with Roy Clark.
  • 1977 -They won their first major award as the Academy of Country Music's Best Vocal Group.
  • 1981 - They released their signature hit "Elvira" which won the CMA award for Single of the Year, a Grammy Award for Best Vocal Performance by a Country Group or Duo, an Academy of Country Music Award for Single of the Year and has since sold millions of singles and became one of the most recognized and loved songs of all time.

That's just the start of achievements and highlights of this stellar career - they have won countless other awards, they sang backing vocals for Paul Simon on his hit song “Slip Sliding Away”, they have recorded with the likes of legends including Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, George Jones, Roy Rogers, Bill Monroe, and many others. They were inducted as members into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2002 and were inducted as members into the Grand Ole' Opry as members in 2018. They were just presented with accolades last weekend for their 49th year performing at the Kentucky State Fair.

They have performed for many US Presidents. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan requested that they sing at a White House barbecue. When President George H.W. Bush was hospitalized in 2002, his wife, Barbara, requested that the Oak Ridge Boys come sing for him, a request to lovingly honored. They sang for him again, one final time, performing "Amazing Grace" at his funeral in 2018.

The Oak Ridge Boys have seen, done and sang it all. They have amassed one of the largest,  most loving and dedicated fan bases in country music all by just being who they are as people. Fans will travel all over this country to sing along with them. They are very approachable, they communicate directly with fans on social media instead of having a social media manager run the show, they will take pictures and sign autographs. They're the kindest, most giving and positive artists in the business, never failing to give back when there is a need. That's who they are and as a longtime fan and someone who is blessed to have connected with them personally 13 years ago and call them friends, have seen this love first hand. They set a personal precedent that few have yet to come near to matching.

Here’s to 50 years. To five decades of friendship, thousands of world wide adventures, millions of musical memories made together. Thank you for being the extraordinary people that you are. You are each a gift to so many and I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say thank you for every bit of it! We love you, the Mighty Oaks Band and the Oak Ridge Boys crew. Let's keep this bus rolling!

If you haven't seen them in action, they still have plenty of shows left on the books this year so go to www.oakridgeboys.com and find out how to get your tickets! Below is their remaining 2023 schedule:

DENNIS QUAID RELEASES "WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS" FROM DEBUT GOSPEL ALBUM 'FALLEN: A GOSPEL RECORD FOR SINNERS' OUT JULY 28

Emmy®️ Award winner and two-time Golden Globe®️ nominee Dennis Quaid's cover of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" from his forthcoming debut gospel album, Fallen: A Gospel Record for Sinners, is available now.

Fallen is slated for release on July 28 via Gaither Music Group. Pre-order the album HERE.

"What a Friend We Have in Jesus" follows Quaid's cover of Kris Kristofferson's "Why Me Lord," which "shows off his rugged vocals (American Songwriter)," as the second track to be released from Fallen.

Combining soul-stirring renditions of seven hymns and classics with five original songs, Quaid delivers honest, inspiring lyrics sung with unmistakable tones that reflect heartfelt gratitude and eternal hope.

During a recent TalkShopLive® appearance at RFD-TV in Nashville, Quaid chatted with host Bill Cody about each of the tracks on Fallen. Watch the full interview and pre-order an autographed copy of the album HERE.

Fallen was executive produced by Quaid with producers David R. "Fergie" Ferguson, Ben Isaacs and Chris Lindsey. The Isaacs and Jackson Brumley supply background vocals on "I'll Fly Away," while The Oak Ridge Boys join Quaid on "Life's Railway to Heaven."

Originally released on the soundtrack for Quaid's faith-based film I CAN ONLY IMAGINE, "On My Way to Heaven" was inspired by the global superstar's public grapple with addiction. Quaid also vulnerably acknowledges these personal struggles and his subsequent return to Christianity on songs like the title track.

Fallen follows Quaid's 2018 album, Out of the Box, described by Quaid as a junkyard of American music. Though he loves writing, recording and making movies, music holds a special place in the Texas native's heart, and for the last four decades, he has toured extensively, displaying equal ease on the piano and acoustic guitar. Quaid enchants audiences with a set list that ranges from songs such as those included on Fallen to rock 'n' roll standards like "Great Balls of Fire!," an homage to "the Killer," whom he portrayed in the 1989 box office smash.

Also known for his roles in THE ROOKIE, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, TRAFFIC, VANTAGE POINT, FREQUENCY, THE PARENT TRAP, SOUL SURFER, THE RIGHT STUFF, BREAKING AWAY and MIDWAY, Quaid's recent big-screen credits include starring roles in Netflix’s uplifting movie, BLUE MIRACLE, Sony’s thriller THE INTRUDER, Universal’s A DOG’S JOURNEY and A DOG’S PURPOSE and Disney's animated adventure film STRANGE WORLD. He also recently completed production portraying the 40th president of the United States in the biopic, REAGAN, slated for release in early 2024.

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL WHEN THE OAK RIDGE BOYS COME TO THE ALABAMA THEATRE ... #CONCERTREVIEW

ARTIST: OAK RIDGE BOYS

VENUE: ALABAMA THEATRE, MYRTLE BEACH, SC

DATE: APRIL 9, 2022

REVIEWER: JENNIFER SMITH

It's that time of year .. The legendary Oak Ridge Boys made their annual Spring trek to Myrtle Beach. SC and played a night at the Alabama Theatre on Saturday, April 9. There is always a special feeling in the air when this crew hits town. You can feel the excitement in the buzz of those eagerly waiting outside the venue for the box office and doors to open. You hear fans telling each other about the songs they hope are played, the last time they saw the band, discussions about William Lee Golden’s latest book “Behind the Beard”and favorite personal memories. Tonight was a night for new memories to be made.

There is just something special about an Oak Ridge Boys show, it's not just the music, it's who these men are as people, the great guys in the band who stand behind them every night on stage, the friendly crew and the connection the Oaks have built with their fan base. They interact personally on social media, they take time to say hello and talk to fans at shows, they are never bigger than their own shoes. They treat people like friends and family and that says so much, especially these days when a lot of artists don't take the time or treat it as though it's a bother. The Oaks recognize the importance of personal connection and that personal connection is what has made them one of the most loved and respected groups in country music history. That attitude combined with their music creates a positive change in those of us sitting out in the crowd and the content of their songs and the relatable stories just make you strive to be a better person, a more appreciative person long after the door of the auditorium closes behind you and you head back into the real world. One other observation I've made at all of the shows I've attended is that each crowd seems to have younger fans in attendance. I love seeing life long fans bringing their kids and getting them hooked on this music so they too can become a life long fan and carry on the Oaks tradition of love and family.

Joe, Duane, Richard and William Lee and the Mighty Oaks Band brought not just their A game, they brought their A+ game this night. Despite the current bitterness and chill of the world outside, the world inside those doors was warm, positive and uplifting. They sang their classics like "American Made", "Louisiana Red Dirt Highway", "Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight", "Callin' Baton Rouge", "Dream On", "Sail Away" and "Roll Tennessee River" which are always a hit with this crowd and had us all on our feet and singing every note right along with them, but they've also added in a special segment, similar to their Christmas tour "rocking chair" fireplace segment, but this one was sitting on the "front porch" on 4 stools. You'll have to get Joe to tell you why William Lee is the perfect stool specimen. LOL! It's a funny story that only he can tell. Tonight was full of off the wall humor and unexpected happenings. There was a lady down front who was once one of the Chipmunks in their Christmas shows several years ago so there was that happy reunion. A fan (one of my favorite people who shall remain anonymous), brought some pickled beets as a gift and Joe and Duane kindly bestowed the gift upon drummer, Austin Curcuruto, and deemed it the "Best Beet Award" which drew a roar of laughter and of course, Joe, in typical Joe fashion started telling a funny story and cracked himself up so bad that he couldn't stop laughing. You just never know what you're gonna get at these shows, but you know it's gonna leave you laughing or leave you crying because you connected on a deeper level than fans do at most shows.

Ok back to the "Front Porch Singin'" segment of the show, LOVED it. This was the most personal and emotionally honest part of the show. Each member told a story that meant something to them and then the group performed the song that was associated with the memory. This segment included their most loved Southern gospel favorite, "Life's Railway", a new one that Duane really drove right to the heart of everyone in attendance and brought tears to some with "Life Is Beautiful", William Lee talked about his days of growing up in Brewton, AL and the cotton fields he calls home and sang about "The Old Ways", Richard talked about his time with JD Sumner and the Stamps Quartet and Elvis Presley before they  launched into one of Elvis' favorite Lord Lovin' foot stompers, "Swing Down Chariot". "Love, Light and Healing", a song title made up of 3 simple words with enormous meaning written by Sherry Martin and Aaron Raitiere, brought an appropriate end to the "Front Porch Singin'" session and I think we all felt those 3 words more this year than ever with the current situations surrounding us. Thank you for that.

The night wrapped up with the 2 loudest versions of "Elvira" and "Bobbe Sue" that I think I've ever heard at any previous ORB show. I'm not talking about the Oaks and the band, the crowd was LOUD and loving every off key note they sang right back. I just love this group, the band, the entire crew. They are a family and every audience member becomes a part of the Oak Ridge Boys family. May this family continue to grow and keep the music playing. We love you all! Thank you for another wonderful night.

Check out the pics below from the show. Don't be stealin' 'em, I know who took 'em :-)

HELPING A HERO: COUNTRY STARS STEP UP FOR THOSE WHO STEPPED UP FOR US

Last night, I watched a telethon. I haven't watched a telethon in years and when I say years, I mean "Jerry Lewis Easter Seals" years. I was told by a publicist about the "Helping A Hero" telethon that was being televised on RFD-TV on December 27 and hosted by Lee Greenwood and Paula Deen. When I saw where this money was going and who was stepping in to be a part of this salute, I knew I would tuned in. I am so glad I did. It opened my eyes to a much larger picture than the one I'd been paying attention to.

"Helping a Hero" is a non-profit organization that provides specially adapted homes for severely wounded Global War on Terror veterans. Honestly, I have never really considered the challenges these heroes face living in their own homes after being injured. I think most of us tend to think they'll have medical home care, but we rarely probably think of what they need just to function and get around at home. Lee Greenwood mentioned a particular case of someone being burned needing a special kind of heating and air system because they no longer have sweat glands. I've never thought of that and when he said that, I wondered how many other things I had been blind to without these kinds of organizations. It can range from something such as an entire home remodel with wheelchair ramps, lowered drawers, cabinets and countertops, roll under access, carpet free floors, roll in showers, therapy tubs and automated doors to something as simple as a special kind of doorbell. Their needs are something we take for granted every day.  It's a sad thing to think how many of these wonderful people who gave everything are now in situations where they are unable to live a life as close to normal as possible or even worse, they are homeless on the streets. That's not acceptable.

Last night again proved to me why I choose to support the country music genre, because these people are always at the ready to do what is necessary to help when they're called. I sat and thought about it and can't think of another genre that answers the call as regularly and genuinely as country music does. From flood relief, to hurricane relief, to St. Judes Children's Hospital, to our military ... the list continuously rolls on. It makes me proud to stand with a genre who stands for something other than just ticket sales and chart numbers.

The performers on this show were all familiar faces when it comes to giving back and they're never ones to turn down the chance to help someone in need. Last night was no different, they stepped up and participated as a family in one of the best nights of music I've heard in a long time. The performances were filmed at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, AL in October as part of the All Star Salute to Lee Greenwood for his years of contribution to not only country music but to those who stand up for America.

Below are the performances shown on last night's telethon:

Lee Greenwood  - Lee opened the show with an emotional rendition of "God Bless the USA". What can you say about this man and this song? You can't think Lee Greenwood and not immediately think gratitude. I could type all day and still not say the words that need to be said so I'll just go with with 2 small words with huge meaning, thank you.

The Frontmen - How can you go wrong with 3 of the most iconic voices of 90's country? You can't. I love that Tim Rushlow (Little Texas), Richie McDonald (Lonestar) and Larry Stewart (Restless Heart) decided to come together as a group and keep the good music going. They sang a medley of "Why Does It Have to Be Wrong or Right", I'm Already There" and "God Blessed Texas" ... well, God definitely blessed the Frontmen.

The Oak Ridge Boys performed their MEGA hit "Elvira" ... it's a proven fact that everyone needs some oom papa mow mow in their lives. This was my favorite when I got the "Fancy Free" album for Christmas in 1981 and it's my favorite now. I will oom papa mow mow at stoplights, in the grocery store, wherever this song comes on. These four men are four of the biggest, most giving hearts in the music industry. They are not just legends, they are treasures.

The Gatlin Brothers performed one of my favorites, well probably everybody's favorite, "All the Gold in California" and I think I smiled the entire time I was singing along very off key. I sang it in my dang head all night. I love these dudes! Those voices are still just as good as the first time I heard them.

Darryl Worley performed his emotional remembrance of September 11, "Have You Forgotten" and made me cry, dang it. What a great performance straight from the heart by just a man and his guitar. Darryl is always one of the first to lend his heart to anything involving giving back to those who gave it all.

Crystal Gayle hit me in the gut with "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue". This was one of my daddy's favorite songs when I was growing up and we'd sing it in the car. It was like being back in that red Pontiac Grandville all over again.

Debby Boone took me back to the best time of my life with her hit "You Light Up My Life." I was growing up in the 70's and would sit by my record player, singing this song and then picking up the needle and putting it back down to start over again ... over and over. I still listen to this song regularly now. It always takes me to a good place.

John Conlee performed "They Also Serve", one I'd never heard before and it really left a mark. I immediately added it to my music collection. I admit, I was somewhat misty.

Home Free - I have been a fan of this group since they were on  "The Sing Off". These guys floor me every time they open their mouths whether it be together or individually. They performed their acapella version of "My Country Tis of Thee" and it was phenomenal. Again, there was a bit of eye mist.

And to close the show, there was a special finale jam of "Soul Man" by the original jam master himself, Sam Moore, and the amazing T. Graham Brown with special guests Janie Fricke, Michael Ray, Lee Brice, Tim Rushlow and Darryl Worley. It just capped off the perfect night of freedom and music.

Thank you to RFD-TV, the Cowboy Channel and OAN for airing this telethon and thank you to all who came together to make it happen. Please consider donating to this wonderful cause. They deserve our respect, love and assistance. Go to https://helpingahero.org for information on how you can help or donate.
