#CONCERTREVIEW: RAY SCOTT AT TUNNEL CREEK VINEYARDS, ROXBORO, NC

Event: Ray Scott
Opening Artist: Matt Boswell
Date: 10/28/2023
Venue: Tunnel Creek Vineyards - Roxboro, NC
Reviewer: Jennifer Smith

I'm a bit behind the proverbial 8 ball on this since the show was on 10/28 but when you work an 8 hour job in addition to music promoting, ya gotta get it in when ya can.

Now, let's talk Ray Scott. When you think of real country music, you think of storytelling, simplicity, honesty. and authenticity. When you hear Ray Scott, you know you're hearing the real, unapologetic, genuine country deal (ok, and he might also be a little on the tilted side of normal). His music is from his heart, he tells the best stories and he tells them in a personal, relatable way. I mean come on, we've all had blind dates where the pictures weren't exactly the same as what you got in reality, we've all taken one for the team at one point, we've been with "The Ugly One", we're all "Grumpy", we try to take "The High Road", we "Ain't Always Thirsty" when we drink, and we've all prayed "Bear With Me, Lord" at least once in our lives. See, he's relatable.

On October 28, Ray made a trip home to NC. He played at the absolutely gorgeous Tunnel Creek Vineyards in Roxboro, NC. This place was amazing, definitely one of God's best painted canvasses with hills, a lake, trees with the fall colors, rows of grapevines and a beautiful win-e-"ray", um, I mean winery. This night was personal for Ray, it was so much more than just another gig. This night was all about home, family, friends, music and it was full of love. It was such a wonderful thing to be a part of.

Matt Boswell started the night and he was great. He kept it down deep country with songs like "Me and Haggard", "I Want My Rib Back", "Believe" and others. Country music might smell funny right now, but it sure ain't dead as long as these 2 guys are still playing.

Ray was up next and kept things mostly "out of the shallow end", playing mainly songs that mean something to him, songs with more than lyrics that make you laugh way too obnoxiously loud (but he did throw in a few of those). He broke out the really good stuff tonight like "Dirty Shirt", "Hey Fool", "Better as I Go", "Slow Dance", "Those Jeans", "Drinkin' Beer", "Put Another Log on the Fire", "Wheels on the House", "My Kind of Music", "Cover the Earth", "Everybody Ends Up Ugly", "Ripples" and others. We were all singing along, laughing along, crying along and dancing along. Tonight was a really good night, one for the memory books.

If you get a chance to see Ray or Matt, please do it. This calibre of talent and songwriting doesn't just pop up at your local bar too often. As they are independent artists, you may not walk in to a venue knowing who they are, but I can promise you that you'll leave as a fan and you'll want to know and hear more.

RAY SCOTT DELIVERS NEW SINGLE, "HEY FOOL", ON JUNE 30

The “Country Renegade” (PEOPLE Magazine)
reminisces on love and fidelity in self-reflective new track:
“This is a ‘Don’t F it Up’ song”

Ray Scott follows his May 31 single “Ripples” with “Hey Fool,” a new track out June 30 at digital streaming platforms.

Known for his “painstakingly crafted” lyrics and stories ”that match his top-shelf vocals” (Billboard), Scott penned “Hey Fool” as a cautionary tale about love, loyalty, and loss, told from the perspective of someone who’s lived the consequences.

“We all make mistakes… we all ‘F it up’ sometimes,” says Scott. “This is a ‘Don't F it up’ song, told by an authority on the subject. I think most can relate… from either side.”

Pre-save/add “Hey Fool” here: https://onerpm.link/Hey_Fool

“Hey Fool” and “Ripples” follow Scott’s 10th studio album, Wrong Songs: Musings From The Shallow End (3.31), a satirical collection of irreverent, high-energy honky-tonk tunes.

While hilariously “shallow,” the album sits atop a deep foundation of hard-earned country music cred. An independent artist with a “fathoms-deep singing voice and wicked songwriting wit” (Rolling Stone), Scott co-wrote Clay Walker's 2003 hit "A Few Questions" and Randy Travis' "Pray for the Fish” before releasing his 2005 debut album, My Kind of Music.

His 2021 album Cover The Earth — hailed as “the kind of country that reaches inside your heart and gives it a two fisted squeeze” by American Songwriter — plumbed the depths of personal pain and family history.

NEW MUSIC REVIEW - "WRONG SONGS: MUSINGS FROM THE SHALLOW END" - RAY SCOTT

If you're easily offended, you might want to listen to other albums but then again, you might wanna release a little and lighten up with this collection of songs as only Ray Scott can write them, sing them and put them into stories you won't want to read to your kids. No one tells a "questionable and colorful" story better than Ray. It's who he is, take it or leave it. From what I've heard and seen, most listeners are choosing to "take it".

The thing about Ray Scott is his ability to be honest and be himself. You don't see that much anymore in an industry that wants to stay "acceptable" and bases criteria for "good music" on a certain image, redundant lyrics, auto-tune, drum beats, mainstream radio play and lots of industry financial backing. Ray bucks that standard, does his own thing, relates to his fan base and sticks to what makes his fan numbers continue to grow every day by simply being Ray and putting it out there. We need more of that instead of the same regurgitated lyrics and sounds. You won't find any country rap here, you won't find "white tank tops" here, you won't find "pick up trucks" here and you won't find contents that isn't relevant in Ray's life somehow, no matter how warped that content is. How cool is that? His voice is unique and as country as they come, he's got his own style of twang and his own sound that no one else can even try to replicate. Maybe that's why he's so likeable, he stands on his own merits and isn't an echo. This album certainly isn't an echo. It's funny, it's honest, it's very relatable to most listeners (well at least most of it is these days) and it's the laugh we could all use in today's uptight, easily offended, woke world.

Hold on tight and get ready for 8 songs that will have you raising your eyebrows, smirking, rolling your eyes and laughing out loud, hopefully not while you're on that office zoom call or in church or something.

Here we go ... seriously, this is pure laugh your tail off comedy gold. They're all great songs, but here are my standouts:

1.) "Between Us" - Yeah, I think I'm gonna just let you go tune in and form your own review of this one because I laugh so hard I can't type.

2.) "In Pictures" - In the age of social media, we have ALL had this happen to us. It's a story of today's ages, it happens every day in an emo coffee shop, a downtown bar, or heck, even the grocery store because I promise you there are strangers out there that met online and decided the local Kroger was the best place to meet in person. The picture online isn't quite what you get in person. Sometimes it's better, sometimes not so much and sometimes it's just not even close. Ray uses no filter in this song, what you see is what you get.

3.) "Everyone Ends Up Ugly" - Yeah we do, one way or another. Enjoy those hair extensions, those rock hard abs, those boob jobs and those speedos and bikinis while you can. Those wrinkles are gonna set in soon, your boobs and butt are gonna sag, your arm flaps are just gonna happen, your belly's gonna expand and your hair is gonna go gray. It happens, we ALL get ugly in the end.

4.) "Santa's Sack" - This one sleighed me when I heard it. See what I did there? Let's just say you'll never look at Santa's Sack the same way ever again. He might have to start delivering toys by Amazon after this song.

Take a chance, take a listen and take a breath because this one's gonna take yours away by making you laugh.

Go to www.rayscott.com and order your copy, put some money in Ray's pocket. If you're a streamer, go get it on the digital outlets like Spotify and Apple Music. Leave reviews for it, talk about it on your social media pages.

Thanks Ray for a bright spot in a dark world and moving the bar down a notch when society has it set just a bit too high. We love and appreciate you, as is.

ARTIST INTERVIEW: GETTIN' REAL WITH RAY SCOTT

There's something to be said about keeping it simple and that's exactly what you can expect from Ray Scott - simple and uncomplicated. He's not about the latest trends, he isn't about projecting a molded image, worrying about chart positions or which arena will hold the most people. What he is about is his core audience, the quality of his music and upholding the tradition that artists before him brought to the table of country music. His music is anything but ordinary and standing out by simply being himself is what keeps Ray real and keeps his listeners coming back for another round. I've always said a true country artist tips his hat to tradition and Ray never fails to do just that.

It's always a good time when Ray comes home to NC. I recently caught his acoustic show at Muddy Creek Cafe and Music Hall in Winston Salem. The venue was small and appropriately unassuming which is the best kind of venue to really get a chance to see the real Ray up close and always personal. The crowd was small and intimate and ready for a night of familiar songs and anxious to hear something new. Ray took the stage beside guitarist Cade Doyle (who is OUTSTANDING by the way) and brought the crowd exactly what they asked for - simplicity at it's finest wrapped in the enigma that is Ray's warped sense of humor. This was such a great night of music as only Ray Scott can deliver. Lots of laughs to hits like "Those Jeans", "Drinkin' Beer", "The Ugly One", "Tijuana Buzzkill", "My Kinda Music" and "Grumpy" and lots of appreciation for the deeper side of his music with songs like "Ain't Always Thirsty", "Soberin' Up", "Dirty Shirt", "Livin' This Way"

I also had a chance to catch up with Ray recently just to see what's going on in his world and get a feel for where he is right now as an artist, how he views the current state of country music and shoot the breeze. Below is what he had to say:

LL: For those who might not know you, and God forgive them if they don't, give us a little bit of background.

Ray: I'm an uncompromising original independent traditional country artist who hails from the great state of North Carolina. The musical habits and wit of certain family members created a monster. I'm that monster.

LL: How would you define "today's" country music, besides the obvious and why do you think it's so popular? LOL!

Ray: Today's "commercial" country music is a natural evolution of a business model bent on creating music that doesn't offend and appeals to the widest ranging audience with hopes of selling to enough people to justify the ungodly amount of money it takes to break an artist at radio. The crossover success of the 90's boom made the labels fat with success, causing them to continue to chase pop-sized success more often, slowly phasing out the traditionalists who appeal to a more specialized and smaller audience, thus selling less product. 10 to 15 years ago, file sharing (stealing music online) cut record sales immensely and challenges since then with lost revenue have forced labels to do what it takes to keep their doors open. In most cases, the best artists and most interesting music are found outside of the commercial machine. That's my opinion. I'm far from alone on that.

LL: What drives you to keep going as an indie artist in such a highly competitive corporate driven industry?

Ray: My drive to keep going as an indie is just based on demand. I have a lot of fan support out there which I'm grateful for and I see a whole alternative movement going on out there that's giving true country fans what they're truly hungry for. Some people love what the radio plays, and that's great, but there are a huge group of fans out there that want stuff that's real, stuff with attitude, steel guitar and balls. I feel like I have a brand of country music that scratches some folks right where they itch. That's what keeps me rollin' along.

LL: What other country artists are you really interested in right now? Any new songs you just can't get out of your head or songs you wish you could get out of your head? Ha!

Ray: I'm paying a lot of attention to what's going on with Cody Jinks, Ward Davis, Kendell Marvel and a handful of others making music that isn't influenced by trends. Randy Houser's latest single, "What Whiskey Does" is one of the best songs I've heard on mainstream radio in a while.   Randy's a friend of mine, so I'm pullin' for him. I'm also hopeful that this song does well on the charts. It's a real country song in my opinion, which I feel is a damn near extinct species at today's radio.

LL: What was your inspiration behind your latest CD, "Guitar for Sale?" People who know your music know this is different than previous projects. What makes it special?

Ray: Guitar For Sale was a collection of a lot of songs I kinda had in my back pocket that I loved.  I didn't worry so much as to how they all "fit" together as a project.  Most of the material varied in style, subject matter, and they were from various periods in my writing life spanning over about 14 years.   Certain circumstances had prevented me from putting most of this material out up to then..  I decided then was the time, and I'm proud of the result.  Each song sounds different than the next from a production standpoint, and that wasn't accidental.  I think what makes it special is that it contains some of my favorites writes, and I was excited to finally get those songs out there.  The people seem to like it, so I'm happy.

LL: I'm gonna throw out some random artist names, tell me the first thing that comes to mind when you think of them, no holds barred.

- Midland

Ray: Studio/marketing plan gone right.

 - Kendell Marvel

Ray: Damned Talented songwriter and singer who finally stepped out and made a record after years of writing songs for other artists and it's a damn good one! He's an old friend and I'm really glad to see it. Country music needs him, even if he does look  like hell. Ha! Ha! (We give each other hell.)

- Sunny Sweeney

Ray: She's blazed her own trail in the trenches, doin' real, ballsy country music for awhile now. She didn't chase the pop star train, she stayed true to her heart.   Great country artist..

- Jamey Johnson

Ray: Dyed in the wool ...  The real deal ...   Does his thing ... could care less what's popular or what the radio's playing.  He packs 'em in and will continue to.

- Willie Nelson

Ray: One of the main reasons I love this format...  legend ...  Icon..  period.

Chris Stapleton

Ray: Chris played guitar on a song I recorded in Nashville ten years ago. A lot of people in Nashville knew he was special back then. Now the whole world knows. You can't manufacture the vocal/artistic gift that guy possesses.

LL: If you had to sell yourself to a room full of potential new fans and you only had one shot to sum up why they should buy your music and believe in you as an artist, what would you say?

Ray: I wouldn't say anything. I'd just start singin' my songs. It's about the music. I'm not trying to please everybody, but percentages say I might get the attention of a handful who will stick with me for life. Those are the ones ya want.

LL: What words of advice that were ever given to you have stuck with you and made an impact on the way you look at things?

Ray: Write what you know and don't chase trends. Also, don't try to be something you're not.
Country fans aren't stupid and their ears don't lie.

LL: Define the term "Outlaw Country." Who are some outlaw artists you've written with, performed with or who have helped steer you along the way?

Ray: I think the term "Outlaw" is used too much, and MISused at that.. Even the original outlaws, Willie, Waylon, etc. didn't really love being called that. They just did what they did and went about their business. These days, we've got a ton of folks calling themselves that, promoting a "bad ass" attitude and brand, but the music doesn't measure up so they have no credibility. Start with great artistry, then let the listeners sort it out.

LL: Sum up Ray Scott as a person in 10 "family friendly" words or less.

Ray: Just a guy with a big heart and a smart ass.

LL:  If Ray Scott came with a warning label, what would it say?

Ray: Warning label...   Hmmm...   probably "Caution...Men at Work".   or "Listening to this music may cause complications in pregnancy prevention".   Ha ha.  Kidding of course. (Note from Jenn- no he's not. LOL!)

LL: What can fans expect from you in the new year?

Ray: In the new year, we're coming with a brand new EP called Honky Tonk Heart. We just launched a Pledge campaign in conjunction with it as a matter of fact! Could you share the link??  ;).  I'm also writing a ton of new stuff, which I'll be trying out on new crowds in the coming months. 2019 will be a great year.

LL: If your life could be summed up in a song title, what would it be?

Ray: If it's my song, "Crazy Like Me" or "I've Always Been Crazy" by Waylon ... notice the common theme there?

LL: Another year is about to come to an end. What would you say has been the best of it and what's been the worst of it and why?

Ray: The best part of 2018 has been my personal growth and sobriety, along with a ton of creative inspiration. I can't dwell on the negatives. I've got a pretty great life.

Yes Ray, what kind of friend would I be if I didn't post the link to what I know is going to be your best album yet? (I'll text you where to send the check ... ha!). Country fans, you're gonna want to get off the bench and in the game for this one, pre-order your copy now. There are various pledge levels with some great rewards including one on one time with Ray - https://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/honkytonkheart. No one has a bigger honky tonk heart than Ray. I said honky tonk heart, not honky tonk badonkadonk, that's another song and another article. He does all his own social media, his ramblings and thoughts are his own and he is one of the best when it comes to fan engagement. You can purchase or stream his music on most music outlets. THE THING ABOUT RAY SCOTT ....

The thing about Ray Scott is that there isn't just one thing that makes me love him as an artist or as a person. There are so many things that there's really no way to put them all here so I'll just give you the Cliff Notes version of why you should give his music a listen and why you will love him too.

- He Side Steps Conventional Wisdom and Listens to His Own Intuition and Creativity. He Delivers Authenticity

When you listen to Ray's music, you'll immediately notice that his writing and vocals won't make you think of anything you have heard on any standard country radio station. You won't hear it and think "ya know who he sounds like?" or "I've heard that somewhere before." The reason for that is there is no one and his songs aren't like every other song coming out of country radio. Ray is Ray, he offers 100% of who he is, take it or leave it, in his music and that's what makes him distinct. He deviates from today's country norm and follows his own blueprint. His smooth deep voice certainly can't be confused with anyone else and his style and lyrical content stand tall on their own. He embraces his eccentricity and his "rayality." He just keeps it real. Country music has been missing "real" for a long time.

- He Created His Own Landscape

Ray carved out his own niche, drew his own lines and blurred them. He doesn't do boundaries and while that might bother some people, judging by his 50K plus fans on social media, which continues to increase daily, it doesn't look like it bothers too many. He did something different with his music, he wrote them in sync with his own personality. Some of his songs, whether they be on the irreverent side or whether they're more personal, all are completely relatable and completely honest both to Ray and to anyone who listens. I know I sure find it refreshing to not hear the same old same old from him and know that with each new song and album, it literally is something brand new, not regurgitated songs just written a little differently like what tends to happen quite often in today's country world, today's music world as a whole actually. It's also nice to know when Ray releases a song or album, it's simply his life and his thoughts put to music, not someone else's idea of what he should sing or write. No one stands out anymore. Well Ray Scott broke that mold by standing on his own two boots. He put the transparency back in country music and the ability to see who the singer or writer is as a person through words and melody. We need more of that transparent quality instead of such thick opacity that you never know what version of an artist you'll see from song to song. Ray's landscape consists of the thick roots of tradition and the mountains that artists before him chose to take on and he continues the path forged by country music history.

- He Rethinks Industry Assumptions

When it comes to Ray, you can't assume. If you even try, well, you know what incorrect assumptions do. When the industry assumes the trend should go one way, Ray Scott deliberately turns the other direction. He takes the path of most resistance.  When the industry assumes an artist should project a certain image, he sticks to his own image. You won't find designer skinny jeans, long hair, tight tshirts, or long chains attaching his wallet to his belt loop. You won't find pierced ears or ensembles thrown together by someone who gets paid to dress artists. Ray dresses himself quite well without assistance and keeps it classy and traditional. When the industry assumes an artist should sound a certain way and depends on auto tuner to make that happen, Ray depends on his own natural ability and it's working quite well. He is more than willing to adapt where he needs to but only if it fits who he is. There's room for Ray in this industry, there's more than enough room for him on country radio and it's time for the assumptions to stop and for the acceptance to start for artists like him. His music is fantastic and there's no assuming about that. What you see and what you hear is exactly what you get from him, he's that perfect mix of everything that is country music with an added splash of true legitimacy.

- He Embraces Technology and Uses It To His Advantage

Ray is a big presence on social media because he manages his accounts personally, he responds personally and regularly and climbs over that invisible fence between fan and artist. He doesn't depend on a social media manager to think for him or post what they think is cute and will draw in fans. He talks to his fan base directly, honestly and includes them in his every day life. That is a huge attraction to new fans. No one wants to correspond with an artist through "Team Whoever" and no one wants to see a timeline full of overindulgent self-promotion that only says "buy my new album", "watch my new video", "pick me pick me". People want real, people want a connection and Ray gives them that on social media. He does regular live feeds and talks to fans, answers questions, and performs from his "man cave". He sends out regular email updates. He does what he needs to in order to broaden his fan base and draw people in. He does it because he wants to do it, not because a major label is making him do it. I've watched him interact with people and he's one of the best at it. His use of technology has allowed him to make fans around the world, not just in the US. In the off season, he can be found performing and connecting with his fans in other countries and shares those experiences via his social media pages with his local fans. His music reaches beyond borders, beyond languages and beyond certain ways of life. It embraces everybody and they embrace it in return. Bono said it best "Music can change people" and Ray Scott does just that. Connect with Ray on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube and find out for yourself.

Ok, so this went longer than I intended, but you get the point. If you're longing for something real when it comes to your play list, add Ray Scott. If your radio station play lists aren't getting the best feedback, add Ray. If you're a serious player label looking for an artist to add to your roster that's gonna bring you something different and something with staying power, let Ray step up the the plate and bat. Take a listen to any of his songs from "My Kind of Music", "Those Jeans", or "Drinkin' Beer" to "The Fire" and "Livin' This Way". He can fit in anywhere and if there's room for what's out there now, there's certainly room for him.

CONCERT REVIEW: JAMEY JOHNSON WITH RAY SCOTT - ROANOKE RAPIDS, NC - JULY 21, 2017

Event: Jamey Johnson with Ray Scott
Date: Friday, July 21, 2017
Venue: Roanoke Rapids Theater - Roanoke Rapids, NC

I'll go ahead and preface this review with this simple fact: I "listened" to this performance instead of just "hearing" it. Jamey Johnson and Ray Scott taught me that difference and made me truly realize it tonight. I'll also add that I hate my photos aren't the normal quality they normally are. I had to use a different camera this time.

First off, I have to say how wonderful the Roanoke Rapids Theater is - the venue itself and it's staff. The acoustics in this beautiful theatre were amazing. The theater was built in 2005 and was owned by Dolly Parton and her brother Ray. Myself and I'm sure many other patrons in the area would love to see the city of Roanoke Rapids, NC really put themselves behind making this venue the success it should be. This place has the potential to be someplace really great for artists and fans alike if the right people will get involved and make it happen. Barn Burner Promotions does a wonderful job promoting the shows, handling the crowd and making sure each show is a success. You really get a great show here. The security is great, they aren't all up in your face but you know they're watching. The artists that have played here rave about the acoustics. It's really hard to beat for sound, location and atmosphere. To Julie. Allison and the whole Barn Burner/Roanoke Rapids Theatre crew, thank you for a great night.

If you haven't taken the time to get to know Ray Scott or listened to his music, he's an artist you should connect with and when it comes to connection, he's one of the best there is. Ray has always been a true country gentleman, even if some of his tweets and social media posts may give you another impression. His respect for this genre and it's fans, his simple and uncomplicated love of the music, his reflection of tradition and the way he treats others have always made him a stand out in my eyes and he only reinforced that Friday night. He treats everyone around him with kindness whether it be a tag along like me, venue staff, fans, or his band, it doesn't matter. He makes a point to engage and get to know people, to make eye contact and really listen to what they have to say. He makes a genuine connection without having to try. I love watching his interaction with those that come to see him, he makes sure they know their time and support is not overlooked. It's just who he is and in today's country music world, it's a hard thing to find and coming from someone who's known him for a few years now, I can tell you it's more than appreciated and something you can't help but support.

Ray and his band, the Guilty Bystanders, took the stage about 7:30pm and the crowd was already ready for this and having not seen these guys in awhile, I was too. He kicked it off with "Ain't Gonna Be You" and it was already loud with screams and "hell yeahs". You knew it was just gonna get better from here. If you go to a Ray Scott show, take the time to say hi to the guys in the band and let them know you appreciate what they do. They stand behind him every show providing some great music and they're all just great, down to earth people. Ray's fantastic on his own but with any artist, a great band like this one always makes them better and can take an average show to the next level and before you know it, you're at a party with a room full of strangers who become friends until the music stops and the show is over. But then too, Ray's shows are anything but average and Ray is true top shelf talent. I also can't leave out the guy that makes these shows happen, their tour manager, Brian. He's a hard working son of a gun and believes in Ray and his band and it's more the obvious that he loves what he does because he does it well.

Ray's set consisted of mostly original music including "Drinkin' Beer", "Ain't Always Thirsty", "Dirty Shirt" and music from his new album, "Guitar for Sale". I think this is his best album to date. It's somewhat of a departure from his usual comedic tunes, it seems to be more personal and coming from a deeper place. Who knew Ray had a deep place? LOL! Wherever it came from, the audience loved it and the CD's were selling like crazy at the merch table. He performed his latest single, "Livin' This Way", which y'all need to tell your local stations to think outside the corporate box and add it to rotation and put the "try" back in their country. He also sang my favorite, "The Fire", which is also on the new album. Hint, hint, I think this should be the next single. He wrapped up his set with 2 of his biggest hits, the GAC video hit, "Those Jeans" and the one that got him off and runnin', "My Kinda Music", well walkin' because I don't think I've ever seen Ray Scott run unless someones jealous boyfriend or husband was chasing him. The place got LOUD, I mean backwoods yee-haw LOUD.

Up next was Jamey Johnson and this was a religious experience for me complete with singing angels and voices of God. Tommy, Ray's bass player and a good friend, was kind enough to come out and get me and take me side stage to watch Jamey's show. I witnessed one of the most heartfelt and impactful performances I've ever seen from an artist. I left with a whole new outlook on music and a different view of Jamey. Jamey's had his share of problems and situations, but the Jamey I saw tonight seemed to be a different guy, a more focused and happy guy. What I saw was a man who loves what he does, has a deep love for the music and doesn't just sing these songs, he feels every word he writes and sings.

Jamey has one of the biggest and most complete band set ups I've ever seen for a country artist. His band consisted of a horn section, drums and percussion which included Tony "TC" Coleman who was the longtime drummer for BB King, keyboards, slide guitar, bass and guitar. He also has one of country's best and most angelic voices backing him up, Melonie Cannon, daughter of legendary producer and songwriter Buddy Cannon. It truly is an impressive set up.

He stood there in the spotlight, with his usual deep expression but this time there wasn't that blank stare, there was something different about him, something lighter and more "untroubled". It was almost like a weight had been recently lifted off his shoulders and whatever burdens he once dealt with were gone. It was something not only I saw but I'm sure anyone paying attention noticed. It truly caught me off guard. Having seen him many times before, this was like seeing and really hearing the real Jamey for the first time and man it hit me right in feels that I had no idea were even there. Watching him sing his songs like "The High Cost of Living", "Lonely at the Top", "Can't Cash My Checks" and doing a JJ rendition of Kenny Roger's "The Music Man" only made me wonder what was going through his mind and how those words have somehow connected personally in his own life. I caught myself getting choked up on my own emotion as I got caught up in his. That's what a great artist and great performance should do and that's exactly what Jamey Johnson did. I'm pretty emotional and passionate about good music and this was just good music. Tonight, I didn't just hear, I listened and most importantly, I felt.

There were a few moments in the night that really stood out for me:

1.) His performance of "In Color" that he sang along with his 13 year old daughter and her friend. This performance was very strong while being very simple. To hear the audience sing the chorus back at him must have really done his soul good based on the smile on his face.I know it sure did mine good.

2.) His performance of "This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land" - simple, patriotic and meaningful.

3.) His cover of the classic Bob Seger hit "Turn the Page" complete with the horn section. This song went over 6 minutes.

4.) He brought Ray Scott back on stage to sing a cover of the Waylon Jennings hit "Drinkin' and Dreamin'". This was country y'all.

I could keep going but I think I'll stop here, you get the picture. To sum it up quickly, this night was the best night I've enjoyed in a long time, really enjoyed from start to end. Thank you again to all of the great people who made this one for the memory books.

CD REVIEW: "GUITAR FOR SALE" - RAY SCOTT ... DING DING DING, WE HAVE ANOTHER WINNER!

#GuitarForSale is available now for pre-order on iTunes and Amazon.

In today's crush of country artists, there's one name that constantly stands out to me, Ray Scott. You won't find him selling out arenas or shaking his "moneymaker" on stage in a pair of nut-crushing designer jeans, instead, you'll find him perfecting his craft in smaller venues in front of more intimate crowds who love the real stuff, know every single lyric and know every song from the early years to his current single. Just a man and his guitar. You'll always find him somewhere between Haggard, Jennings, Jones and sometimes a little Ray Stevens.

Ray Scott may not be a household name but he is hardly an unknown. He's been performing nationwide since 2003, landing a record deal with Warner Bros in 2005 which produced his "My Kind of Music" CD which spawned 3 singles. After leaving Warner Bros, Ray took the path of an independent artist which is where he's built his following and really cemented his reputation in Nashville as a serious (if you can use that term in conjunction with someone who is rarely serious) country artist and songwriter. It was his hit single, "Those Jeans" that put his name on the map. The song was a hit both on Sirius XM's The Highway and a top requested video on GAC. To date, he has performed over 50 times on the historic Opry stage and he tours overseas every year. Ray is like country music Viagra, he's got staying power and provides hours of enjoyment.

His new CD, "Guitar for Sale", hits shelves tomorrow but for those fans who participated in his crowdfunding campaign and got their copy early are already giving it well deserved praise as are country music reviewers. This CD may be titled "Guitar for Sale" but the quality of the music on this project proves that Ray's creativity and talent are not. The songs on this CD come straight from Ray, a departure from his normal comedic schtick, they're like Ray himself, a little dark and moody yet personally relatable. The music on this CD comes from some of the industry's finest country musicians and the production of this CD comes straight from Nashville, not some misplaced pop production team. This may very well be Ray's springboard onto (gulp) country mainstream radio, if
they show any common sense.

This one's well worth every spin and I think Ray's going to find himself with an even larger base of new fans.

Hey Ray, we love your kind of music!

Connect with Ray online. He's one of the most personally engaging artists on social media. It's all 100% Ray who responds because no social media manager could ever engage like Ray does with his fans.

RAY SCOTT TO RELEASE GUITAR FOR SALE ON JUNE 9TH

Critically-acclaimed singer songwriter Ray Scott will release his sixth studio disc, Guitar For Sale, on June 9, 2017, with distribution through The Holland Group / Sony/RED. The North Carolina native premiered the set’s first single, “Livin’ This Way” in March during an appearance on the Grand Ole Opry.

“When I went into the studio with my friend, and new producer, Michael Hughes, my goal was to do something a little different, something live tracked that’s not so polished, maybe even rough in spots, with the hope we’d come out with a product that had elements reminiscent of the way music first hit my ears when I was a young’un,” said Scott. “It wasn’t my intent to worry about what the rest of Nashville was doing… 'course it never has been. I’m proud to say I think we accomplished that. My first single, ‘Livin’ This Way’ is based on a classic country music theme - pain. In keeping with my habit of honesty in songwriting, I thought it was a good way introduce this new project.”

Scott has already begun the promotional process for Guitar For Sale. He will appear on Nashville Today, the popular midday show on Music City’s NBC affiliate, WSMV, on April 20. He will also be featured on such popular websites as Rolling Stone Country, CMChatLive.com, and CountryRebel.com. The performer will also be very active during the upcoming CMA Music Festival, with performances at Storme Warren’s Nashville Navy Party on June 7, his own fan club / CD release party on June 9.

Ray Scott has built up an impressive career over the past decade. His 2005 debut album My Kind of Music racked up sales of over 100,000 units, and became the # 1 Country Album on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, and his “Those Jeans” single has sold over 300,000 copies – all from the song’s exposure on SiriusXM. He has tallied four No. 1 singles in the United Kingdom, accounted for over one million Spotify streams, and over 711,000 new views on YouTube. Scott has also performed on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry over sixty times in his career. The entertainer has also tasted success as a songwriter, with cuts from superstars Trace Adkins, Clay Walker and Country Music Hall of Fame member Randy Travis to his credit.

JOHN BERRY TO HEADLINE "SOUTH GEORGIA STRONG" TORNADO RELIEF BENEFIT CONCERT

Concert featuring Berry, Buddy Jewell, Ray Scott, and more
Set for February 26 in Tifton, Georgia

Country music star John Berry is returning to his home state of Georgia to sing for a cause very near and dear to his heart.  On Sunday, February 26, Berry will join fellow country stars Buddy Jewell, Ray Scott, Cyndi Thomson, and others, for the "South Georgia Strong" tornado relief benefit concert.  The event will be held at the UGA Conference Center in Tifton, Georgia.  100% of the proceeds go to those affected by storms that ravaged the area just weeks ago.

"Our hearts are heavy after seeing everything that many of our friends and former neighbors are currently going through and will continue to go through over the days, weeks and months to come.  The recent storms destroyed so much in the South Georgia region," says Berry.  "In times like this we must hold our heads up and stick our helping hands out."

Between the hours of 3:00 AM and 3:00 PM on January 22, the storms spawned multiple tornadoes across seven South Georgia counties - Daugherty, Worth, Turner, Cook, Berrien, Brooks and Thomas. The results were nearly 20 confirmed deaths, hundreds of homes completely destroyed and over $100 million in damages.  Daugherty County (Albany, GA), which was hit the hardest, was already recovering from a tornado that occurred on January 2.

Berry adds, "McAlpin Entertainment, who is hosting the benefit, reached out to me asking if I was available, knowing we used to live there and still have many friends residing in the affected areas, and I immediately accepted without reservation. It's the right thing to do and I am blessed to be able to offer my time in hopes we can ease the burden some."

The concert begins at 5:00 PM.  Tickets are $30.00 and may be purchased online at Freshtix.com.  The UGA Conference Center is located at 15 RDC Road in Tifton, Georgia.

I have to admit, in today's country music market, there is literally a small handful of artists I would take unpaid time off from work and drive 3 hours to see. I've done it once for Ray Scott a few months ago and did it again this past Friday. It was totally worth every bit of it. When an artist is as genuine, unapologetic and fun as Ray, you don't let a chance to catch his live show pass by. You just don't. He is so interactive with the crowd and entertaining, not only in his music but in his attitude that you kinda get a music performance and a comedy show wrapped up in one tour stop. Ray is the ultimate rule bender, irreverent and blunt in his lyrics and storytelling yet he manages to stay within that traditional boundary. He's seriously not like any other artist out there and that's why fans love him. You WILL wind up laughing most of the night while trying to sing along with his uniquely styled songs. He brings something strangely different and at the same time familiar to each performance and this is what keeps him an Opry favorite, having graced the stage more than 50 times. The rest of the country, and world for that matter, is catching on. He's had several #1 hits in Europe and has done multiple international tours and his videos for "Those Jeans" and "Drinkin' Beer" were big hits here in the states.

The Mason Lovette Band, a local NC band, took the stage first. I hadn't seen them before and really enjoyed their performance.Great choice to get the crowd up and running, very energetic and interactive. Check them out at www.masonlovette.com. Ray and his band took the stage about 10:30pm to an anxious crowd. He has one of the best live bands and you can tell they have a good time doing what they do. The talent on the stage with Ray every night is top shelf and are so entertaining to watch and listen to. Mike Bourque is a bad ass who can rip an electric guitar like no one's business, drummer Nick Diomedes is a familiar name around Music City who been featured on various projects including "The Scarecrow Project" as the drummer on  "Long Way To Rest" a duet between 2016 CMA New Artist of the Year Maren Morris and Texas troubadour Derek Larson, bass player Tommy Michael keeps things thumping and is like The Godfather watching over the stage, and steel player Troy Klontz was the longtime steel player for Brooks and Dunn. Ray Scott doesn't play around when it comes to choosing his band. He settles for nothing but the best which means YOU get the best at every show. That's exactly what we got at his City Limits Saloon stop. He played our favorites and had us laughing through most of them, he kept it familiar and didn't bombard us with a bunch of new stuff we couldn't sing along to. He did play one song, "The Fire", from his upcoming new album which was a (pardon the pun, or don't), surefit hit. The song is a little more contemporary than Ray Scott fans might be used to, but no worries, you're not gonna get any rap or pop, it's just a little different but still in the "Ray Realm". This one is gonna turn heads for sure and hopefully the right ears. Ray sang all of his fan favorites like "Put Another Log on the Fire", "Grumpy", "Dirty Shirt", "The Ugly One", "Her Ol Man", "These Jeans", "Drinkin' Beer" and many others. Ray and the guys gave us a great performance and left us all singing questionable lyrics in our heads all night. Tip one back for Ray Scott, tip another one back as a thank you for his keeping it real! Keep this up, we'll all be drunk by the encore! HA!

CONCERT REVIEW: RAY SCOTT HOMECOMING SHOW IN ROXBORO, NC ON JUNE 3

When Ray Scott is coming to town, you know it's gonna be a good time but when he's coming to HIS hometown area, you know the bar just got raised a whole lot higher. Ray performed for friends, family and quite a few drunk friendly strangers this past weekend in Roxboro, NC and man was it hot and I'm not just talking about the sweltering heat. The women love Ray and honestly, I think some of the men may have had a manly man crush going on to. That's because Ray has this certain country "swaggertude" that people just love. Fans love that he is unapologetically Ray and he is who he is. He's the kind of guy you can drink a beer or twelve with and feel like you just sat down with a lifelong friend.

The show was held outside and it was a typical NC summer day, full of boob sweat, swamp crotch and melted makeup before you even got from the parking lot to the performance area. I definitely looked and felt like I'd gone a few rounds with Mike Tyson or either mated with a raccoon by the way my mascara had melted around my eyes but it was more than worth it for the show I was about to see.

There were two great opening acts, the Rock City Rollers who did an outstanding job of covering some classic rock hits and I gotta say, the young guitar player, Adam Snow (I think that was his name) was one of the best guitar players I've ever seen hands down. He had great vocals too. He broke out a version of Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" that damn near rivaled the original on quality. What a great set these guys put on.

Next up was local artist, Matt Boswell and the Hillbilly Blues Band. Matt was pretty impressive as well, great vocals and very entertaining to watch. I immediately downloaded his singles, "My Way of Life" and "Working Mans Prayer" on iTunes.

Even though the weather was questionable with severe thunderstorms forecast and lighting streaking across the sky in the distance, this didn't deter real country fans from sitting and enjoying a night of great music. Ray took the stage about 9pm and had a HUGE set list over more than 20 songs. Sadly, I only got to see about half of the show since the weather was getting bad in the direction I had to go but it was still a hell of a show. Ray is one of country's best and confusingly most underrated storytellers. He can tell a story better than Uncle Seuss ever could and that's what his songs are, stories. They're stories about life, probably about personal experiences if you know Ray, they're locker room stories set to music and they're stories that the every day man can relate to. You won't hear drum machines, auto tuner or overplayed screeching electric guitar during his show. What you will hear is simple yet undeniable country music that makes an impression. With his deep rich vocals and an amazing band made up of some of the best in the business, any Ray Scott show is more than worth your time, the drive and the ticket price. I'm glad I made the 4 hour drive for this one and I'd do it again. This time the drive lead me down the "high road" to one of the best shows I've ever seen.

10 MUST SEE ARTISTS AT #CMAFEST2015

Country fans are getting ready to take over Music City for 4 days next month and most are excited about seeing the big names at LP Field but we're excited for you to experience the newer artists, those you may not be familiar with and see what they have to offer. You may find that you have a new favorite! Here are our choices for 10 of the best new artists you must see at CMA Fest this year (in no particular order.) They've each made a name for themselves this year and are names you'll be hearing long after you get home from CMA Fest.

She's got a contagious smile and an infectious attitude, but this country beauty has the voice and stage presence to make her the total package. With her current debut single, "Love Me Like You Mean It" sitting at #13 on the charts, Kelsea Ballerini is making her way to the top in record time.

Friday, June 12
12:45pm - 1:10pm
Bud Light Stage

You may know Craig as last season's "Comeback Kid" who went on to win NBC's hit series, "The Voice" last season, but Craig's not a new voice on the country block. Having pounded the streets of Nashville for years, he's finally made his way to the attention of Americans everywhere. His debut single, "My Baby's Got a Smile on Her Face" hit #1 right out of the gate, tying Garth Brooks as the only artist to debut at #1 and now his second single, "I"m Still Here" is quickly gaining momentum.

Sunday, June 14
 3:00pm
Chevy Riverfront Stage

This country girl isn't content to sit on the sidelines and watch other females get the attention, she's come out swinging with her singles "Sorry on the Rocks", "Famous" and her latest "I Only Smoke when I Drink". Kelleigh Bannen's made her presence known and has made her mark on country music.

Saturday, June 13
12:05pm - 12:30pm
 Bud Light Stage

Another artist we could go on for days about, Mo Pitney. Mo is the right artist at the right time in country music. Talk about well timed. Right when fans are getting tired of the same old same old, along comes this soft spoken guy with anything but a soft voice. Mo's single "Country", co-written with "Whispering" Bill Anderson has country fans shouting for "Mo Country", not "Bro Country". When a voice can bring an entire room to dead silence and put tears in the eyes of the listener, you know you've heard brilliance. He is the "ePITome" of traditional country from his baseball cap to his cowboy boots. This boy's blood runs thick with tradition and twang.

Thursday, June 11

Ray Scott is an original to say the least. His voice is deep and sexy, his attitude is brash and in your face and his music is the perfect combination of all of those ingredients. Ray is the guy your mama warned you about, but the artist that's proving that theory wrong because no one's mama could have ever had an imagination this good.

A Thousand Horses hit the scene running with the power of ... well ... a thousand horses. Their current single, "Smoke" is smoldering on the charts in the Top 10 and it's looking like they may just have their first #1 single very soon. Crowds gather quickly to hear these guys in action so you'll want to stake out your spot pretty early!

Thursday, June 11
1:25pm to 1:50pm
Bud Light Stage

How would we describe Brian Davis? Unapologetic, rowdy, drunk on country and ready to put a boot in any crowd's ass. Fresh off the Hell on Wheels tour with country bad boy, Brantley Gilbert, Brian's kicked into full party mode and it doesn't take an invite to his party because everyone is welcome to grab a cold one and pull up a tailgate. Brian has co-written many songs with area artists including Brantley's current hit, "One Hell of an Amen" and that's exactly what fans are saying at the end of a Brian Davis show - amen!

Rick Monroe, the face of the Jagermeister Country Tour for the past few years, has been pushing the Nashville envelope for years just trying to get someone to finally open it and see what a winner he is. This year, that envelope's been opened with his latest CD, "It's a Love Thing" making waves with industry players and his single "Fire's Out" breaking onto the Billboard charts and was even featured on Fox News this morning!

After years of being an independent artist, releasing his own music and trying to prove himself, his hard work and belief in himself paid off in spades with his indie single, "Buy Me a Boat" hitting #1 on the iTunes country charts and peaking at #7 on the all genres chart, edging out Taylor Swift with the video being financed and produced by CMT and finally signing a record deal with Warner Music Nashville. Chris is a phenomenal songwriter and an energetic, interactive artist who knows how to keep 'em coming to the shows and buying the music.

Where did this spitfire come from? Cam came out of nowhere and blasted country listeners with her fun, flirty debut single "My Mistake" and now she's everywhere you look. With a bright personality, a unique and one of country music's strongest female voices, we'll be seeing and hearing much more from Cam.
