RONNIE MILSAP RETURNS WITH “A BETTER WORD FOR LOVE” ON 4/30

Classic Ronnie Milsap with Songs from Mike Reid, Gary Nicholson,
Al Anderson, Jim Weatherly, Allen Shamblin, David Ball, Thomas Cain & More...
featuring a duet with Vince Gill on Carl Perkins’ “Big Bertha”

Country Music Hall of Fame legend Ronnie Milsap follows up his all-star Duets, featuring Kacey Musgraves, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Billy Gibbons, Luke Bryan and George Strait, with a 10-song slice of the soul country he’s inhabited for the last half century. A Better Word for Love explores the R&B-steeped sound that has long been the 6-time GRAMMY award-winner and 3-time Country Music Association Male Vocalist of the Year winner’s trademark.
Teaming with longtime co-producer Rob Galbraith, the pair sought to celebrate the genre-blurring kind of country that led him to an unprecedented four CMA Album of the Year Awards, as well as the coveted CMA Entertainer of the Year. Drawing on some much-loved songs that hadn’t fit prior projects, the pair built an homage to the 70s/80s/90s country Milsap defined.
Mike Reid (“Stranger In My House,” “I Can’t Make You Love Me”), Gary Nicholson (“One More Last Chance,” “The Trouble With The Truth”), Al Anderson (“All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down,” “The Cowboy In Me”), Jim Weatherly (“Midnight Train To Georgia,” “Best Thing To Ever Happen To Me”), Brent Maher (“Why Not Me,” “Lesson In Leavin’”), Allen Shamblin (“The House That Built Me,” “Life’s A Dance”), and David Ball (“Drinkin’ Problem”) provide the top shelf songs people have come to expect from the legendary musician.
“I have been blessed to work with some of the very best songwriters in the world,” Milsap reflects. “Over the years, they’ve kept bringing me unbelievable songs, and in some cases, they’ve let me hang onto them because I loved them so much. When Rob and I started this project a few years ago, we decided some of those songs were so special... We wanted to build this album around them, so they wouldn’t be treasures only Joycee and I could hear.
“We got to go back to Ronnie’s Place, the studio I built all those years ago, just dig in and cut them – and some songs that have the same kind of heart, the soul and that joy that I’ve always loved. You know, even a sad song when you do it sad enough’ll make you feel better.”
Along the way, Milsap received a special package from Carl Perkins’ widow. “Big Bertha” was the last song the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer had written. She’d sent it to Milsap thinking he’d do it right. Not only did the Academy of Country Music Pioneer Award winner bring his signature slow burning blues to the song, he enlisted Vince Gill for the quick-hitting, fiddle-punctuated country portion of the paean to more than a woman, but a driver.
“Singing a song about a golf club without Vince Gill just didn’t feel right,” Milsap laughs. “And he was able to bring that thing he does like nobody else to Carl’s song. Somewhere I think he’s smiling.”
Whether the undulating “Wild Honey,” the cascading tavern country “Almost Mine,” the soft soul “Fool” or the vintage Milsap title track, every style of the Georgia and North Carolina Music Hall of Famer’s storied career is on display. To further honor these songs, Milsap enlisted some of Nashville’s finest to play with: guitarists Brent Mason, Steve Gibson, Mark Casstevens, and Chris Leuzinger, bass player Michael Rhodes, drummer Lonnie Wilson, double steel players Mike Johnson and Paul Franklin, and Milsap’s longtime musical director Jamie Brantley.
As a further homage to his longtime musical compatriots, Milsap includes “Civil War,” recorded live at Atlanta’s Chastain Park in 1993. Capturing his longtime touring band in their prime, the Cindy Richardson/Carol Chase song weaves Southern gospel into a song of marital dissolution – and demonstrates the vocal dynamics, keyboard stylings and drama onstage.
“Music makes the world a better place,” Milsap says. “Love songs may not change everything, but they sure speak to the heart, give people joy and maybe starting there in these crazy times is a good thing.”

RONNIE MILSAP GETS HIS CHRISTMAS ON - COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME MEMBER RELEASES HOLIDAY SINGLE 10/16

“ Merry, Merry Christmas Baby” Is His First Holiday Song in Two Decades
featuring double Musicians Hall of Famer Jim Horn on Sax

Country Music Hall of Fame member, six-time GRAMMY winner and CMA Entertainer of the Year Ronnie Milsap is getting into the holiday spirit. Known for his genre-blending soul-country, the man who’s won four CMA Album of the Year and three Male Vocalist of the Year Awards offers a yearning take on the soul classic “Merry, Merry Christmas Baby.”

“I have always loved Christmas,” Milsap says of his choice. “Even though it’s a sad time for many, there’s a real soul to the way the holidays make even those feelings feel. I’ve always loved Dodie Stevens’ version of this, which recasts ‘Happy, Happy Birthday Baby’ for the holidays. So, it felt like a way to remember the ones remembering over the holidays...”

Opening with a few descending notes, the keyboards fall in, then Milsap’s smoky voice rises. Slightly nostalgic, “Merry, Merry Christmas Baby” comes wrapped in ribbons of Jim Horn’s sax, and old school background vocals. Produced by Rob Galbraith and Milsap, this version provides a strong mix of Rat Pack elegance, Patsy Cline’s sultry anguish and the Ray Charles vintage country/soul band presence that saw Milsap become a crossover powerhouse and cross-genre critical favorite in the ‘80s.

“A lot of today’s country singers make records with an R&B influence, but they have nothing on Ronnie Milsap,” offered USA Today. American Songwriter has raved about “his gift for interpretation, while the Nashville Scene praised “the soul of a country-pop master” and The Tennessean writes, “Milsap has long thrived by ignoring genre distinctions.”

Teaming with Black River Entertainment in time for the holiday season, the legendary blind keyboard player who’s done session work for Elvis, done duets with Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and tv appearances with Little Big Town and Luke Bryan, as well as played the Howard Theater and the Whiskey A-Go-Go on his way to winning back-to-back Best Country Vocal Performance, Male Grammys for “Lost In The ‘50s Tonight” mines his rich musical history to put his stamp on this broken-hearted Christmas classic.

“At a time when the world needs love, and it’s harder to get than ever,” Milsap says, “this seemed like the perfect song. I’m blessed to have my wife Joycie, but I know so many people missing their loved ones. And I know Rick Froio, Mike Wilson and everyone at Black River, not only understand, they recognize how many people are feeling this, too.”

“Merry Merry Christmas Baby” will be digitally available to stream and download on October 16th, 2020.

WAY BACK WHEN WEDNESDAY - "NO GETTIN' OVER ME" - RONNIE MILSAP

Contributor: Alyse Smith

It’s Way Back Wednesday again and Thanksgiving is creeping up on us close…  Before you know it, it’ll be Christmas.  According to the stores, Christmas starts the day after Halloween but that’s neither here nor there.  Before we delve into this week’s song, I’d like to take a minute to acknowledge that both the Marine Corps birthday and Veteran’s Day happened this week.  Please join me in yelling “Happy 239th Birthday Marines! You carry those years well! Hope the week’s celebrations are great!” and also to thank and commend the Veterans for their service.  It is a valiant job when instead of running away from the danger, you run towards it and save not only your fellow enlisted but keep all of us stateside safe as well.  I’m glad you’re home safe.  Active military, please stay safe out there as well.  Onto this week’s song! “No Gettin’ Over Me” was the title track of Ronnie Milsap’s turn of the decade album, released in 1980.  It was written by Tom Brasfield and Walt Aldridge.  According to Ronnie’s website bio, he was aspiring vocally towards a James Taylor-esque sound in this song. What makes this song unusual are the jazz influences it has.  There are pop influences as well but those don’t sound as strange given that weaving the pop music of the time has been a tried and true practice for decades.  Uncommon both today and in the 80’s, the horn section in this song makes me wonder why there historically hasn’t been a stronger practice of implementing a brass section in one’s music.  Aside from special live performances and Zac Brown Band’s “Uncaged” you are hard pressed to find discernable bits of trumpet or horn anywhere. Ronnie’s honeyed vocals melt well into the brass section and create a 3 minute reprieve of peace and calm.

Now in his 70’s, Ronnie continues to create music and is currently on tour.  In fact, his latest album “Summer Number 17” was released earlier this year.  He also has a Thanksgiving show at the Country Music Hall Of Fame.

Like good fried chicken, the lyrics here are classic and simple done right.

CMA CLOSE UP: RONNIE MILSAP LOOKS FORWARD TO THE PAST

By Bob Doerschuk

© 2014 CMA Close Up® News Service / Country Music Association®, Inc.

Ronnie Milsap has no fear of mining his past and building his sound on what he retrieves. All the elements of his new single and title track, “Summer Number Seventeen,” written by Joe Hunter and Sam Hunter, harks back musically to much of his catalog. His longtime, loyal fans will ease into it like weary listeners into a warm bath of reverie.

Inspired as much by Jim Reeves as by soul giant Jackie Wilson, Milsap embraces multiple influences. That’s why his new album can’t be pigeonholed any more than his earlier releases. Summer Number Seventeen, released Jan. 28,is a concept project, specifically a tribute to some of the artists and songs that affected him in his formative years. This being Milsap, that means the selections are remarkably diverse, including his versions of Lloyd Price’s “Personality,” Jimmy Ruffin’s “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted” and “Tears On My Pillow” by Little Anthony and the Imperials.

“We started hearing some of the songs that Ronnie and Richard Landis and Rob Galbraith, his producers, were working on,” said John Jackson, VP, A&R and Content Development, Legacy Recordings. “At first it seemed like, ‘Oh, here’s a bunch of songs that Ronnie likes.’ And there was nothing wrong with that. But when we heard the new song, ‘Summer Number Seventeen,’ I wrapped my head around what that means for him and for everybody, which is to remember back to the summer when maybe you graduated from high school or got your first car or went to the beach with your friends. That’s what he was thinking about. These are songs that he was covering when he was 17 and just starting out. Once that gave the album shape, it made total sense.”

Some of Milsap’s covers stick closely to the arrangement and feel of the original versions. On others, he stretches out and takes the song to a different place. The most notable example is “Georgia On My Mind.” With his personal and professional veneration of the late Ray Charles, Milsap realized that the worst way to approach the song would be to emulate his late friend’s immortal rendition.

“I was going to be inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1990,” he remembered. “They said, ‘Would you perform “Georgia On My Mind”?’ I said, ‘No, I can’t do that! Ray Charles recorded the definitive version.’ They said, ‘Well, just see what you bring to it.’ When we started work on Summer Number Seventeen we couldn’t find the original master, but we had the performance on a DAT that Rob had kept. It’s different than the Ray Charles version, but we really do like what we did.”

Sweetened by a remake of a Milsap classic, “Lost In The Fifties Tonight” (Fred Parris, Troy Seals and Mike Reid), Summer Number Seventeen is essential listening for all who have long loved his music. But there’s plenty for younger fans as well, if not in the elegant orchestrations and resonant vocals, then in the artist’s epic history.

“There’s a backstory of discrimination and misunderstanding of his talent and where he comes from,” Jackson said. “He didn’t understand racism, for instance, so he didn’t differentiate between genres or styles or performers. It was weird to hear Country Music with a piano back then, when everybody was playing guitars. But he had 40 No. 1 hits despite being a little left of center. It’s amazing. And it’s a story that needs to be told to a new generation.”
