SINGLE REVIEW: "THE SKY IS FALLING (PATTI JO'S PRAYER)" - STEVE AZAR AND SOPHIE YOUNG

SINGLE: The Sky is Falling (Patti Jo's Prayer)
ARTIST: Steve Azar / Sophie Young

Purchase "The Sky is Falling" on iTunes and Amazon

Steve Azar’s latest single, “The Sky Is Falling” is an atypical release by the typically sunshine-y singer. The reason why it sounds so different is because it was written with a different purpose in mind. Instead of good time songs or interesting stories as Azar has previously released, this one has a specific cause; human trafficking awareness. Everyone thinks of human trafficking/sex trafficking as happening somewhere far away. An issue that is a horrible tragedy and “thank god we don’t have that here, thank god that would never happen in our town, hug your loved ones a little tighter tonight.” Is not an unusual sentiment or statement. While it is nice to think that stuff only happens in foreign countries and big cities, it’s untrue. According to an article that Azar’s website links to “Sex trafficking is a human tragedy and it’s happening in Maine. That’s a message Waynflete School senior Mike Rodway and South Portland Detective. Sgt. Steve Webster are trying to spread, with a big assist from a Nashville recording star.” Webster and Azar are friends, and thus forth Azar wrote this song with help from Rodway, Webster and their experiences interviewing those affected by this devastation. There is a video to further convey the story behind the song, created by Rodway and produced by Webster. One of the very pertinent points they hope to drive home is that the individuals affected by this is “prostitutes are victims more than they are criminals.” Though they do also stress to convey that hope, help and raised awareness is what they’re looking for. People looking to get back to their lives or start a new one. The video ends on a hopeful note.

They strive to inform what exactly human/sex trafficking is, how to raise awareness, where this is happening, and how to help. They strive to show who the victims are and what the specific problems are. The common associations with the people here might surprise you. Everyone has their own stereotype vision in their head, it is rarely shone a light on what someone has gone through or what the victims actually look like. The girl featured in this video doesn’t look like anything other than someone’s daughter or little sister. Your best friend next door perhaps. One who laughed with you in the cafeteria, sharing her an Oreo or some fries. In the video we transition from “victim” to "survivor” because “victim” though it is a title needed for a time, it’s not the only title nor is it a permanent one. Not only is it championing for a great cause and a needed reminder that this could happen anywhere, it also reminds you that you never know someone’s story or motivation for doing something. Their life choices aren’t always their own, your first glance isn’t always accurate. Try to understand instead of judge and villainize that which you haven’t been through yourself.

Steve Azar and Sophie Young sound great, the violin and guitar are beautiful, the video will greatly impact those who watch it, inspires you to get up off your ass and do something.

STEVE AZAR'S CORN CHOWDER

Serves 10-12

Ingredients

8 ounces bacon, chopped
1/4 cup olive oil
5 cups chopped yellow onions (about 4 onions)
1 chopped red bell pepper
1 poblano pepper, chopped
2 cloves garlic
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
1/2 cup flour
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
1/2 teaspoon curry
12 cups chicken stock
6 cups medium-diced yukon gold potoatoes, unpeeled (2 pounds)
10 cups corn kernels, fresh (10 ears) or frozen (3 pounds)
2 cups half-and-half
1 bunch cilantro chopped

In a large stockpot over medium-high heat, cook the bacon and olive oil until the bacon is crisp, about 5 minutes. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and reserve. (I usually pour out some of the grease leaving maybe 1/4 cup) Reduce the heat to medium, add the onions, peppers , garlic and butter to the fat, and cook for 10 minutes, until the tender.  Stir in the flour, salt, pepper, cayenne, curry and turmeric and cook for 3 minutes. Add the chicken stock and potatoes, bring to a boil, and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes, until the potatoes are tender. If using fresh corn, cut the kernels off the cob and blanch them for 3 minutes in boiling salted water. Drain. Add the corn and a handful of chopped cilantro to the soup, then add the half-and- half.  Cook for 5 more minutes, until heated. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper. Top with crumbled bacon and any of the other below toppings!

Optional Toppings:
Grated Cheddar Cheese
Fresh jalapenos (my fav!)
Sour Cream
Diced Avocados
Chopped Cilantro
Lime wedges for squeezing
Tabasco
Chopped Scallions

MATT KENNON PICKS UP MOMENTUM AND SUPPORT FOR NEW SINGLE

Joins Steve Azar On Select Tour Dates
Teams With Ride Records For Radio Promotion

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 11, 2012)—Matt Kennon (RoaDDawg Records) has partnered with Ride Records to formally introduce Kennon’s current single “You Had To Pick On Me”* via the launch of an official national radio promotion campaign.

Moved by a topic that is tragically becoming daily headline news, Kennon’s “You Had To Pick On Me,” addresses the increasing presence of bullying through song. A co-write with Jami Grooms and Garrett Parris, the track is a striking and honest reflection of victim sentiment and it’s struck a chord with many to recognize bullying as a life-threatening issue—a growing problem that can no longer be silenced.

The song features two perspectives, from both a young woman and man, suffering from tragic and troublesome experiences and hushed heartaches as a result of harassment. The frank lyrics express the dark and silent pain of the victims. Kennon’s closing verse is the result and response; he appeals for a change and reminds listeners that some of those who are bullied feel no alternate escape from the turmoil but to take their own life.

“Matt and I were talking about our new tour dates together and he mentioned his new song. Once I heard it, I knew we wanted to be part of helping him work this single,” Steve Azar, owner of Ride Records introduced. “It’s so timely with what’s going on, not only in our children’s lives but across the country--victims are young and old. Matt delivers the message in an artistic and powerful way; it’s truly a great song.”

“It’s an issue that has been a historic problem, yet very little has been done to address it publicly—other than through tragic news stories.” Kennon adds. “This song lays it out there—paints a picture—and it’s my way of drawing more attention to the problem. I’m thrilled Steve and his team at Ride Records see the importance of the message and share my vision to get it out there to speak on behalf of those who cannot.”

Ride Records’ Harry “Bud” Nelson and Dave “Duke” Sholin will head the national radio promotion campaign supported by the stellar promotions team already in place (Al Brock, Ann Chrisman, Regina Raleigh and Ed Gertler of Digital Delivery Services) that has lent their tremendous talents to captivate audiences and generate awareness across the country.

To further support the endearing campaign, Steve Azar and Matt Kennon are working to establish a schedule of tour dates together in the 2012 summer season. Matt has also received a personal invitation from the D.A. of Mobile, Alabama to organize a series of performances at local schools to add volume to the important message in Kennon’s home state. The school appearances will begin in May.

“We are pleased to align with Matt Kennon; he’s an artist who is committed to his song and has the work ethic to stand behind it,” Bill “BT” Twyman, President of Ride Records concluded. “The story is from a real place and it’s a story that is tough to tell. Nevertheless, we all are aware that we can no longer hide the true-to-life fact that bullying is real and effects all mankind in a very real way. Matt delivers it with heart and soul.”

Ride Records works in tandem with independent talent to change the country music landscape. Home to Steve Azar, the label is proud to announce the signings of two brilliant singer/songwriters, Dave Hardin and Walt Wilkins. CD releases are expected from Hardin and Wilkins in the coming months. For more information on Ride Records, visit: www.riderecords.com.

More information about Matt Kennon, including tour dates and appearances, is available at his website, mattkennon.com. Now at No. 69 on the Music Row chart, Kennon’s “You Had To Pick On Me” is available on Play MpE and all Internet outlets.

What is Delta Soul?
It’s a style of music born in the people that come from the Mississippi Delta. It tells the stories of a hard life, the mixing of cultures and race, poverty and pride. It’s about earning a meager living from the cotton crop, or the long hours on the Mississippi river. The music of the Delta has influenced some of the greatest rock and blues music of all time. Eric Clapton, The Stones, Paul Simon, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top and so many others have been inspired by the sounds that resonate deep in its very soil.
“Delta Soul” is the music from a man born and raised in the heart of it all. It’s a mix of the sounds and musical lessons he learned growing up in Greenville, MS. It’s honest and pure, the lyrics are a journey through the places he’s been and the people he’s known. It’s the stories shared by family, friends and blues legends.
Steve Azar mixes his Delta roots with blues, rock and soul, and a little touch of twang to create his sound, "Delta Soul". It’s a collection song’s that take you along on Steve’s musical journey through his life in the Mississippi Delta.

CONCERT REVIEW W/ *EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS*: MONTGOMERY GENTRY W/ DRAKE WHITE AND STEVE AZAR - DANVILLE. VA - 7/29/11

CLICK ABOVE PHOTO TO SEE CONCERT PHOTO GALLERY

I am ashamed to say that before tonight, I'd never seen Montgomery Gentry perform live, not by choice but because of the natural messed up obstacles life throws in your way that makes you miss the best things sometimes. That's what this was, one of the best things I've missed many times before and now that I've seen it, won't miss again.

Anthony (the concert world's best undiscovered photographer (www.anthonybarhamphotography.com) that happens to be one of the coolest people on the planet too) and I loaded up our stuff into the car and hit the road for the quick road trip to Danville, VA from Raleigh, NC. Neither one of us had seen any of these guys, had no idea what to expect but knew it was gonna be good. We got to the venue and stepped out into the 400 gagillion degree heat to pick up our credentials and get this thang started. We found our seats and just about the time we finished inhaling our Chick Fil A sandwiches and recovering from heat stroke, the local radio personality stepped up to the mic and introduced Drake White. Ooooh, wasn't expecting that because we had no idea he was an opener along with Steve Azar. I'd heard great things about Drake so I was looking forward to hearing what this guy had to put out there and put it out there is exactly what he did. He was outstanding. His first song, "Born 50 Years Too Late" is a song that one of my favorite artists, Chris Hurt, released so I had no idea that it was actually a Drake White composition. What a great way to start the show, definitely won me over. He was pretty funny too, announced to the crowd that he was heading to the merchandise tent to sign cds, shake hands, take pics and even kiss ya on the mouth if ya wanted. Well, ok then, you don't have to hit this blonde in the head with a bottle of peroxide, I'm all over some kissing on the mouth! LOL! But alas, just as I was heading to collect on that kiss thing, my phone buzzed with a text telling me to come back to the bus to meet up with Eddie Montgomery for a bit. Hmmm, miss a possible smackeroo from Drake White AND miss Steve Azar just to sit and catch up with one of my favorite people on the planet? Hell yeah I would and I did. I hated to miss Steve because he's been on my radar to see for a long time, but being that I adore some Eddie, there was just no contest this time so we headed backstage to find our way to the bus. On the way, ran smack into Troy Gentry (OH MY...). He was very friendly and when I told him we were looking for the bus, he said Eddie was getting dressed. I asked him if Eddie was nekkid cause I didn't need to see that side of Montgomery Gentry. LOL! He assured me Eddie was not nekkid and we went on back.

We were standing beside the two buses and I see the trademark red Jim Beam boots walking underneath the bus and knew that only meant one thing, Edmo was in the house! I can say that Eddie is one of the few artists I've come to know that is exactly who he projects himself to be, a good old country boy who just likes to sing and perform. After spending some one on one time with him, I can tell you that this is a good man, a wonderful person and someone I am lucky to call a friend. I gotta say it was pretty damn cool to sit there on the couch and watch Eddie stand in front of the mirror in his stage clothes (flag jacket, red boots, black jeans and his trademark black hat), making sure he looked ok. He's a pretty intimidating guy dressed up in his Johnny Cash black. He made sure we had cold beer in hand and let us hang out and make ourselves to home while he and Troy did their meet and greet. They are both so involved with their fans and not the types to shake your hand real quick, give a fake smile and pose while rushing on to the next person. They take time with each person, remembering you by name and where they met you. That is a rarity in today's music environment, meet and greets are so "produced" and fake, not genuine at all which is why I stopped paying money to meet artists. This was the true meaning of "meet and greet" and it was very impressive. One of the things Eddie did that really stuck with me was just after handing me my beer, he said "Like I tell everyone that comes on this bus, I'll show you where things are one time, then you make yourself to home and get what you want on your own." That was just very nice for him to do. After the meet and greet ended, we left Eddie to have some quiet time with his son before hitting the stage and we went back to our seats. A few minutes after we sat down, the lights went down and the intro music kicked into full gear. We headed to the base of the stage to be sure to catch some great shots of the guys when they came out.

When they hit that stage, the entire pavilion erupted in hoots, hollers and a thunder of applause. You can definitely tell that these people love Montgomery Gentry, that they're a loyal fan base. Eddie and Troy interact personally with their audience, not generically, it's definitely on a more personal, heartfelt level than most artists seem to. I'm sure that with the past year of issues that Eddie's had to endure, he's even more cognizant of the fact that these people are there to see he and Troy, not just another show. He seems to be a "changed" man, constantly thanking those in attendance for being there. Actions like this is what makes Montgomery Gentry so special to their fans. They do their best to put on the best show they possibly can, regardless of what's going on around them, their moods or what's happened that day. They make each show an experience, something that leaves you singing and smiling when you leave. They broke out all the classic MG hits like "Tattoos and Scars", "My Town", "One in Every Crowd", "Back When I Knew It All", "Hell Yeah", "What Do Ya Think About That" and they also gave a great performance of their newest single, "Where I Come From". I highly recommend purchasing this one on iTunes or Amazon. It's a great song and one that country radio needs to start playing in their regular rotations. They announced that a new cd is on the way and you know I'll be reviewing that one.

They performed "Lucky Man" and I could see it in Eddie's face that this song means so much more to him now than it ever has. He truly is a lucky man and he takes the time to acknowledge that at the end of the song by thanking God. This is yet another reason I love these guys, they're not afraid to be who they are, acknowledge their faith in God, and play their kinda country. They closed out the show with the song that took American Idol, Scotty McCreery, all the way, "Gone". They rocked the pure country out of it and when that was over, they took it to a whole other level by breaking out some Kiss with "Rock and Roll All Night". What a great way to end a night! Fans were happy, singing as they exited the venue. We had made plans to hang out with Eddie some more after the show, but Danville security doesn't play games, they shooed us outta there like flies on grandma's pies cooling on the windowsill. Edmo, THANK YOU for a great night and for just being you. Montgomery Gentry rocked their asses off and blew the roof off the place. If you get a chance to catch these guys live, take it. Their show isn't a show, it's a fan party and just a good time. The music was fantastic and the atmosphere was so much fun. Great show! I don't think I've seen anyone throw down like Montgomery Gentry. Next time, it's on like Donkey Kong so make sure you have plenty of cold beer in that fridge, guys.
